Llegando al trono mundial con una controvertida victoria ante Ibeth Zamora y defendiendo su cinturón por primera vez con dos knockdowns inexistentes ante Anabel Ortiz, era evidente que, sucediese lo que sucediese en el combate, en cuanto se llegase al veredicto los jueces le iban a dar la victoria a la estadounidense Marlen Esparza 12(1KO)-1 sobre la japonesa Naoko Fujioka 19(7KO)-3-1.
Sin embargo, la corrupción de los jueces esta vez ni siquiera se disimuló, puesto que en un igualado combate en el que el triunfo de Fujioka hubiese resultado perfectamente justificable (como también lo habría sido un triunfo por un asalto de Esparza o un empate), dos de los jueces le dieron todos los rounds a la local con un increíble doble 100-90, siendo la restante puntuación un 97-93. Por ello, daba igual lo que hubiese hecho o dejado de hacer en el cuadrilátero la japonesa, puesto que las cartulinas estaban prefijadas antes del enfrentamiento para asegurar el triunfo de Esparza.
Tanto al ataque como a la contra Fujioka tuvo buen acierto con sus hooks en el round inicial, si bien posteriormente sus éxitos ofensivos se igualaron con el jab y las contras en cruzado zurdo y directo de Esparza. De todos modos, aunque en los primeros cuatro asaltos la precisión de la estadounidense pudo ser el factor determinante ante una contrincante que despreció las tareas defensivas, Fujioka siguió presionando con determinación sacando numerosos curvos y haciendo que el combate estuviese contendido.
De hecho, en el quinto asalto la japonesa sacudió a su rival con un gancho y en el sexto la presionó con su frecuencia de golpes. Entre desesperados intercambios las dos tuvieron sus momentos en un igualado séptimo round, aunque quizás la regularidad de Fujioka decantó las acciones, en contraste con el octavo asalto, en el que las certeras manos de Esparza le valieron a ésta el round. Por lo tanto, a falta de sólo dos episodios, el combate parecía empatado y cualquiera de las dos podía decantarlo, teniendo nuevamente ambas dispar grado de éxito y elementos a su favor para justificar el triunfo: algunos valoraron más la frecuencia de ataque de Fujioka y otros la claridad de las manos de Esparza. Pero de ningún modo había sido un combate de un solo lado como dijeron dos de los jueces.
Si el enfrentamiento hubiese sido una unificación masculina del peso wélter entre dos boxeadores estadounidenses, las sesgadas cartulinas de los jueces habrían conllevado un estallido de protestas que habría supuesto algunas consecuencias en la Comisión Atlética, incluso aunque fuesen superficiales y sobreactuadas. Pero siendo una unificación femenina, en una división ligera y beneficiándose a la medallista olímpica estadounidense sobre una veterana japonesa, esta injusticia impresionante no tendrá repercusión alguna. Al contrario, los analistas estadounidenses famosos evitarán hablar de la polémica y en todo caso la justificarán con su habitual: “al fin y al cabo, pese a las tarjetas demasiado amplias, ganó quien lo merecía”.
Hovhannisyan arrolló a Agüero
Teniendo en cuenta que su derrota mundialista ante Rey Vargas fue controvertida, que es uno de los mejores aspirantes actuales del peso supergallo y que es miembro de una promotora con poder, es sorprendente que al armenio Azat Hovhannisyan 21(17KO)-3 le esté costando tanto acceder a un nuevo mundial. De todos modos, el púgil es top 10 en los cuatro organismos, está en gran estado de forma y pronto debería llegarle ya una nueva pelea decisiva, demostrando anoche que estará listo para ella arrollando al dominicano Dagoberto Agüero 15(10KO)-2(1), que venía de un igualado combate contra el olímpico Aram Avagyan.
Hovhannisyan salió a presionar buscando generar daños contra el ágil Agüero, algo que logró en el primer asalto con un directo al torso que dobló a su oponente, quien fue golpeado por posteriores golpes de poder. En el comienzo del segundo round el dominicano cayó por un gancho zurdo en un cruce, mientras que en la reanudación Hovhannisyan atacó ferozmente con hooks hasta volver a tumbar a Agüero. Finalmente, una nueva intensa ofensiva de Hovhannisyan obligó al árbitro a detener el combate.

Reaching the WBC throne with a controversial victory against Ibeth Zamora and defending her belt for the first time with two non-existent knockdowns against Anabel Ortiz, it was evident that, whatever happened in the fight, as soon as the verdict was reached, the judges were going to give the victory to the American Marlen Esparza 12(1KO)-1 over the Japanese Naoko Fujioka 19(7KO)-3-1.
However, the corruption of the judges this time was not even concealed, since in an even match in which Fujioka’s victory would have been perfectly justifiable (as would had been a victory by one round for Esparza or a draw), two of the judges gave all the rounds to the local with an incredible double 100-90, the remaining score being 97-93. For this reason, it did not matter what the Japanese did in the ring, since the cards were predetermined before the bout to ensure Esparza’s triumph.
Both in attack and countering, Fujioka had good success with her hooks in the opening round, although later her offensives were matched by Esparza’s jab and counter left hooks. In any case, although in the first four rounds the precision of the American could have been the determining factor against an opponent who neglected defensive tasks, Fujioka continued to press with determination, throwing numerous hooks and making the fight close.
In fact, in the fifth round the Japanese rocked her rival with a hook and in the sixth she pressured with punching rate. Between desperate exchanges, the two had their moments in an even seventh round, although perhaps Fujioka’s regularity was decisive, in contrast to the eighth round, in which Esparza’s accurate hands earned her the round. Therefore, with only two rounds to go, the match seemed even and any of the two could win it, and again in this last strecht both had a disparate degree of success and elements in their favor to justify the victory: some valued more Fujioka’s punch output and others the clarity of Esparza’s hands. But it was by no means a one-sided fight.
If the bout had been a welterweight unification between two American male boxers, the judges’ biased cards would have led to an outburst of protest that would have led to some consequences in the Athletic Commission, even if it were just shallow. But being a female unification, in a light division and benefiting the American Olympic medalist over a Japanese veteran, this shocking injustice will have no repercussions. On the contrary, famous American analysts will avoid talking about it and in any case will justify it with their usual: «after all, despite the wide scorecards, the right boxer won.»
Hovhannisyan overwhelmed Agüero
Considering that his world championship defeat to Rey Vargas was controversial, that he is one of the best current super bantamweight contenders and that he is a member of a powerful promotional company, it is surprising that Armenian Azat Hovhannisyan 21(17KO)-3 is having a hard time gaining access to a new world championship bout.
