Con combates destacables desde el miércoles, con un jueves y un viernes ajetreados y con un campeonato mundial del peso pesado el sábado, esta semana se presenta interesante y llena de actividad a la que prestar atención. Así que, sin perder más tiempo, comencemos con los mejores combates de la semana.
Miércoles 20 de abril
En el Melbourne Convention Centre de Melbourne, Australia, se producirá una velada emitida por Fite que contará con un buen combate del peso medio, que además será una eliminatoria semifinal IBF. En ella se enfrentarán el fogueado Michael “Pretty Boy” Zerafa 29(18KO)-4(1), que padeció sus derrotas recientes ante excampeones mundiales como Kell Brook, Peter Quillin o Jeff Horn, y su compatriota Issac “The Headsplitter” Hardman 12(10KO)-0, un joven y peligroso pegador pero sin experiencia de gran nivel. De ese modo, un púgil consolidado y uno emergente combatirán para dirimir el lugar de cada uno en la división y para situarse a una pelea de distancia de un campeonato mundial.
En el respaldo, la local Cherneka Johnson 13(6KO)-1 y la mexicana Melissa Esquivel 12(2KO)-2-1 combatirán por el vacante cinturón mundial IBF del peso supergallo, duelo bien emparejado entre dos púgiles que llegan de derrotas (en otras divisiones y ante rivales de nivel) y que debería resultar contendido e igualado.
Jueves 21 de abril
Pasando al jueves, en este día se producirá una velada menor de Golden Boy Promotions emitida por DAZN. El combate estelar pondrá frente a frente, en el peso superligero, al exretador mundial filipino Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta 32(17KO)-3(1)-3 y al estadounidense Joel Díaz Jr. 26(22KO)-2(2). El veterano Gesta no boxea desde 2019 y parece haber entrado en una crisis seria de rendimiento, si bien Díaz, pese a su porcentaje de knockouts y a estar más rodado, se quedó cortísimo en sus dos mayores combates (rápidas derrotas ante Prograis y Cristian Coria). Por ello, aunque ambos tienen puntos en contra, se piensa que Gesta podrá sumar una victoria que le permitiría ser considerado como un posible rival para púgiles con más aspiraciones.
En el respaldo los invictos Manuel “El Meny” Flores 11(8KO)-0, peso supergallo, y Jousce “Tito” González 11(10KO)-0, peso superligero, disputarán peleas de desarrollo ante dos veteranos, respectivamente, Víctor “Pelón” Ruiz 23(16KO)-12(6) y Jairo “Dobermán” López 26(17KO)-14(6).
En el jueves también destaca una cartelera del Team Palle desde el Frederiksberg Hallerne de Copenhague, Dinamarca, en la que se disputará un campeonato de Europa del peso superligero, cinturón vacante desde que lo abandonó Sandor Martín. Los coaspirantes serán el local Enock Poulsen 11(4KO)-0 y el francés, extitular UE, Franck Petitjean 23(6KO)-5(1)-3, siendo de esperar que la destreza y el boxeo táctico del primero le sirvan para lograr el triunfo ante un púgil más experimentado pero que sufrió una clara derrota ante Michal Syrowatka, al que el invicto derrotó en su último combate.
Parte de este evento será también una defensa obligatoria de la monarca mundial IBF del peso pluma Sarah Mahfoud 10(3KO)-0, que tras derrotar a Brenda Carabajal disputará su combate más exigente hasta la fecha ante la alemana, campeona de Europa, Nina Meinke 12(3KO)-2(1) que, más allá de su derrota ante Katie Taylor y de un controvertido tropiezo ante Elina Tissen, cuenta con meritorias victorias ante Vissia Trovato y Lucie Sedlackova.
Este no será el único mundial femenino de la jornada, puesto que en el Casino de Montreal, Canadá, GYM Promotions organizará una velada en la que la campeona WBC del peso minimosca, la mexicana Yesenia “La Niña” Gómez 19(6KO)-5-3, afrontará como visitante su combate más difícil desde que se coronó ante Esmeralda Moreno. Y es que su contrincante será la hábil e imbatida canadiense Kim Clavel 15(3KO)-0, una púgil que por el momento casi no ha perdido asaltos, de la que se espera bastante y que tiene opciones claras de lograr la victoria si se llega a la decisión de los jueces.
Viernes 22 de abril
El mayor enfrentamiento de la jornada será un campeonato por el título interino WBO del peso gallo en el que se enfrentarán Paul Butler y Jonas Sultan. En el respaldo se producirán los combates James Dickens vs. Andoni Gago y Sam Maxwell vs. Alejandro Meneses.

Unas horas antes también se pondrá en juego otro título mundial, ya que el campeón WBO del peso mínimo Masataka Taniguchi defenderá el cetro que capturó ante Wilfredo Méndez enfrentándose a Kai Ishizawa.

Por si esto no fuese suficiente, además, en Italia se producirá una velada de Matchroom Boxing y OPI emitida por DAZN en la que el invicto pegador del peso supermedio Ivan Zucco buscará seguir sumando knockouts y escalando puestos en el ranking WBC enfrentándose al serbio Marko Nikolić. Esta pelea estará acompañada por pugnas para los púgiles locales Mirko Natalizi, Samuel Nmomah y Francesco Grandelli.

La jornada del viernes se completará con un evento emitido por BoxNation desde el York Hall de Londres, Reino Unido. En el combate estelar, el exaspirante al título británico Ashley Sexton 17(5KO)-2(1)-1, que el pasado julio puso fin a seis años de inactividad, tratará de lograr la mayor victoria de su carrera enfrentándose en el peso gallo al resistente extitular nacional sudafricano Sabelo Ngebinyana 13(10KO)-5, mientras que en el semifondo Dean Dodge 9(3KO)-1-1 y Reece “Bomber” Bellotti 14(12KO)-5(2) pelearán en un campeonato regional británico (Southern Area) del peso superpluma.
Sábado 26 de abril
Sin lugar a dudas, el mayor enfrentamiento de la semana será el campeonato mundial WBC del peso pesado entre Tyson Fury y Dillian Whyte, combate que será presenciado en el estadio por más de 90.000 espectadores. En el respaldo tendrán lugar los choques Isaac Lowe vs. Nick Ball, Anthony Cacace vs. Jonathan Romero y David Adeleye vs. Chris Healey.

Produciéndose este evento que centrará las miradas, y no queriendo los promotores rivales arriesgarse a que sus carteleras sean pasadas por alto, no habrá mucho más que destacar en el sábado. Aun así, se puede hacer mención de estos otros choques:
-En el EDION Arena de Osaka, Japón, se disputarán dos campeonatos nacionales, uno por el vacante cinto del peso supermosca entre los veteranos Kenta Nakagawa 20(12KO)-4(2)-1, 9º WBA, y Hiroyuki Kudaka 28(11KO)-18(2) y el otro entre el titular del peso superpluma Kosuke Saka 21(18KO)-6(4) y su retador Kanehiro Nakagawa 11(5KO)-6(2).
-En el Abu-Bekr Temple de Sioux City, Estados Unidos, dos participantes en el torneo Boxcino, el ghanés Sena Agbeko 24(19KO)-2(1) y el exretador mundial John Thompson 19(7KO)-4(2) (ahora llamado Apollo Thompson) tratarán de lograr su primera victoria significativa en años enfrentándose en una pelea del peso supermedio.
-En el National Stadium de Georgetown, Guyana, el peso supermosca local Elton Dharry 25(15KOKO) disputará uno de los mayores combates de su carrera ante el invicto campeón nacional panameño Orlando Peñalba 11(2KO)-0-1, contando ambos con victorias por decisión ante el exretador mundial Gilberto Pedroza.
-En The Grand Ho Tram Strip de Vung Tau, Vietnam, el 7º WBO del peso mosca, el uzbeko Olimjon Nazarov 27(15KO)-5, tratará de afianzar su posicionamiento en el ranking peleando por un título menor contra el joven filipino Jerome Baloro 6(4KO)-1, que ofreció una pelea exigente al ranqueado Regie Suganob y que llegó a la decisión pese a caer a la lona.
-En el gimnasio de Universum en Hamburgo, Alemania, Universum emitirá por YouTube una velada en la que el 1º IBF del peso superligero, el argentino Jeremías Ponce 29(19KO)-0, encarará un sencillo rodaje ante el mongol Bazargur Jugder 3(2KO)-3-1, púgil que entrará abrumadoramente por detrás en las apuestas, y que es de esperar que pierda con mucha amplitud, pero que el año pasado superó las expectativas y sorprendió a Davide Doria, sacando ante él un empate.

With mentionable fights starting on Wednesday, a busy Thursday and Friday, and a world heavyweight championship on Saturday, this week promises to be interesting and full of activity to pay attention to. So, without wasting time, let’s start with the best fights of the week.
Wednesday, April 20
At the Melbourne Convention Center in Melbourne, Australia, there will be an evening broadcast by Fite that will feature a good middleweight bout, which will also be an IBF semifinal eliminator. In it will clash Michael “Pretty Boy” Zerafa 29(18KO)-4(1), who suffered his recent defeats against former world champions such as Kell Brook, Peter Quillin and Jeff Horn, and his compatriot Issac “The Headsplitter” Hardman 12(10KO)-0, a young and dangerous puncher but without high quality experience. So, a consolidated boxer and an emerging fighter will battle to settle which is their place in the division and to be one fight away from a world championship.
In the support, the local Cherneka Johnson 13(6KO)-1 and the Mexican Melissa Esquivel 12(2KO)-2-1 will fight for the vacant IBF super bantamweight world belt, well matched duel between two fighters who come from defeats (in other divisions and against good opponents) and that could be contested.
Thursday, April 21
Moving on to Thursday, this day will have a minor event of Golden Boy Promotions aired through DAZN. The main fight will be a super lightweight clash between Filipino, former world challenger, Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta 32(17KO)-3(1)-3 and American Joel Díaz Jr. 26(22KO)-2(2). The veteran Gesta hasn’t boxed since 2019 and seems to have entered a serious performance crisis, although Diaz, despite his knockout ratio and having more recent activity, fell way short in his two biggest fights (quick losses to Prograis and Cristian Coria). For this reason, although both have points against them, it is possible that Gesta could obtain a victory that would allow him to be considered as a possible rival for boxers with more aspirations.
In the undercard, the undefeated Manuel “El Meny” Flores 11(8KO)-0, super bantamweight, and Jousce “Tito” González 11(10KO)-0, super lightweight, will have development fights against two veterans, respectively, Víctor “Pelón ” Ruiz 23(16KO)-12(6) and Jairo “Dobermán” López 26(17KO)-14(6).

Friday, April 22
The biggest match of the day will be a WBO interim bantamweight championship in which Paul Butler will face Jonas Sultan. In the undercard will take place the bouts James Dickens vs. Andoni Gago and Sam Maxwell vs. Alexander Meneses. Link to the preview.
