El australiano Michael Zerafa batió por KOT en el segundo asalto a su invicto compatriota Issac “The Headsplitter” Hardman en una eliminatoria semifinal IBF del peso medio. De ese modo, ahora Zerafa está rozando la disputa de un mundial, que podría alcanzar ese mismo año si el cinto IBF quedase vacante.

En cuanto al respaldo de este evento, la peso superpluma Carly Salmon venció por decisión unánime a Krystina Jacobs, el pegador del peso supermedio Benjamin Bommber derrotó por KOT en el cuarto round a Waiwit Nareeruk, el espigado peso superwélter Campbell Somerville venció en el segundo asalto a Lawrence Glover, Kim-Alina Ross y Zoe Putorak empataron en un muy buen duelo y Jack Gipp ganó en el primer episodio su pelea ante Lepani Levatia.

En cuanto al evento de Golden Boy y DAZN, el veterano exretador mundial filipino Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta retornó al ring anotándose un knockdown y venciendo por decisión unánime al estadounidense Joel Díaz Jr., que pese a la derrota ofreció gran esfuerzo, voluntad y coraje.

Los combates de apoyo de esta cartelera terminaron con triunfos antes del límite de los favoritos, todos ellos jóvenes prospectos. El peso ligero Jousce González derrotó por KOT en el sexto asalto a Jairo “Dobermán” López, el peso gallo Manuel Flores superó en el tercer round a Víctor “Pelón” Ruiz y el peso mosca Jan Salvatierra batió en el segundo episodio a Ernie Márquez, los mismos rounds que tardó el peso pluma Jorge Chávez en vencer a Jonathan Tejeda.

El vacante cinturón de campeón de Europa del peso superligero fue a parar a manos de Enock Poulsen 12(4KO)-0, que derrotó por decisión unánime (116-113 y doble 114-113) al francés Franck Petitjean 23(6KO)-6(1)-3. No obstante, éste fue un choque polémico en el que hubo muchas acciones antirreglamentarias y en el que Poulsen fue asistido por su esquina a medio combate por una lesión de hombro, algo que provocó protestas de Petitjean. Se habla de que podría producirse una revancha, pero la EBU es un organismo inoperante y es posible que no ordene tal solución y que simplemente mantenga su plan, o sea un combate entre el campeón y Massi Tachour.
En el respaldo del Poulsen-Petitjean, la titular mundial IBF del peso pluma Sarah Mahfoud 11(3KO)-0 retuvo su título mundial con una victoria unánime (doble 97-93 y 96-94) ante la dura Nina Meinke 12(3KO)-3(1). Así, Mahfoud afianzó su reinado y ahora tendrá un año para encarar defensas voluntarias o para poner sus miras en una unificación en una categoría en la que comparte trono junto a Erika Cruz (WBA) y la doble monarca Amanda Serrano (WBC-WBO).
Respecto al mundial WBC minimosca entre la mexicana Yesenia Gómez y Kim Clavel, éste finalmente no se disputó debido a que la segunda se puso enferma. Así, habrá que esperar unos meses para terminar viendo materializarse este choque.
Viernes 22 de abril
El excampeón mundial Paul Butler superó por mucho las expectativas y ofreció la actuación más meritoria y eficaz de toda su trayectoria, anulando en gran medida al peligroso Jonas Sultán y capturando el título interino WBO del peso gallo. En el caso de que John Riel Casimero sea desposeído de su corona, Butler se convertirá en monarca de pleno derecho.

En el semifondo, el muy prometedor peso supergallo Peter McGrail se mostró arrollador y derrotó por KOT en el cuarto asalto al mexicano Uriel López. Por contra, otro mexicano, Alejandro “El Tocino” Meneses, aprovechó las brechas del invicto extitular de Reino Unido Sam Maxwell para derrotarle por KOT en una muy emocionante batalla.

También fueron parte de este cartel el triunfo por knockout en el quinto asalto de James Dickens sobre Andoni Gago y la victoria por KOT en el tercer asalto de Rocky Fielding ante Timo Laine.

Respecto al mundial WBO del peso mínimo, Masataka Taniguchi retuvo su título con un KOT en el undécimo asalto en la revancha ante Kai Ishizawa, por lo que cuatro meses después de su coronación hizo una declaración de intenciones en cuanto a que piensa estar a la altura de las circunstancias en su reinado.

Pese a un susto, el pegador italiano del peso supermedio Ivan Zucco terminó en el segundo asalto con el serbio Marko Nikolić. En el respaldo de este evento de Matchroom/OPI sumaron claros triunfos Mirko Natalizi, Francesco Grandelli y Samuel Nmomah.

Terminando con el viernes, Ashley Sexton 17(5KO)-3(2)-1 sufrió un severo revés en sus planes para esta nueva etapa de su carrera tras su retorno, ya que fue vencido por KOT en el quinto asalto por el sudafricano Sabelo Ngebinyana 14(11KO)-5, quien próximamente debería recibir una buena oportunidad en virtud de este meritorio éxito como visitante. En este mismo cartel, Reece “Bomber” Bellotti 15(13KO)-5(2) cumplió los pronósticos y derrotó por KOT en el séptimo asalto a un menos experimentado Dean Dodge 9(3KO)-2(1)-1, capturando el título regional británico del Southern Area del peso superpluma y poniendo sus miras ahora en el cetro inglés.
Sábado 26 de abril
El campeón mundial WBC del peso pesado Tyson Fury defendió su cinturón con un KOT en el sexto asalto sobre Dillian Whyte, sugiriendo tras el combate que esta será su última pelea en el boxeo, algo que realmente parece improbable.

En el choque coestelar de esa velada, el campeón británico y de la Commonwealth del peso wélter Ekow Essuman una vez más impuso su ritmo y su frecuencia de golpeo para vencer, siendo esta vez el derrotado Darren Tetley. Por otro lado, Isaac Lowe sufrió su segunda dura derrota consecutiva (la anterior le llegó ante “El Venado” López) a manos del prospecto Nick Ball, que le derribó y le batió por KOT en el sexto round.

En el primer tramo de la cartelera principal del Fury-Whyte se produjeron dos pésimamente emparejados duelos. En uno David Adeleye derrotó en el cuarto asalto a un Chris Healey en muy mal estado de forma y en el otro Tommy Fury venció a los puntos a un Daniel Bocianski de nivel bajo.

Cambiando de evento, el sábado también se anotó una victoria el número 1 IBF del peso superligero Jeremías Ponce. Con todo, Ponce no se midió al rival original Bazargur Jugder sino al sustituto tardío Achiko Odikadze, al que derrotó por KOT en el tercer asalto. En cuanto al resto de peleas destacadas de la jornada:
-El campeonato japonés Saka-Nakagawa no tuvo lugar, pero sí se disputó el choque por el vacante título del peso supermosca entre Kenta Nakagawa 21(12KO)-4(2)-1 y Hiroyuki Kudaka 28(11KO)-19(2), en el cual, como se podía prever, se impuso el primero por decisión unánime (99-90 y doble 98-91). Así, Nakagawa inició su tercer reinado nacional y posiblemente pueda mejorar alguna posición en el ranking WBA, en el que era 9º antes de este triunfo.
-El ghanés Sena Agbeko 25(20KO)-2(1) derrotó por KOT en el séptimo asalto al exretador mundial John Thompson 19(7KO)-5(3) en un decisivo choque para ambos, por lo que su carrera tomó aire y quizás pueda acceder a una importante pelea en la segunda mitad del año.
-Por decisión unánime, el peso supermosca Elton Dharry 26(15KOKO) se impuso al invicto Orlando Peñalba 11(2KO)-1-1, triunfo que es probablemente el más relevante de su carrera y que le permitirá entrar en la larga lista del WBC a través de la captura de un título menor.
-El 7º WBO del peso mosca Olimjon Nazarov 28(15KO)-5 venció por la mínima en una decisión unánime (triple 96-94) al filipino Jerome Baloro 6(4KO)-2, de modo que, aunque mantendrá su posicionamiento, sigue logrando victorias muy ajustadas que sugieren que padecerá una derrota en cuanto se mida a un contrincante de nivel alto.

Wednesday, April 20
Australian Michael Zerafa beat his undefeated compatriot Issac “The Headsplitter” Hardman by TKO in the second round in an IBF middleweight semifinal eliminator. Zerafa is now very near of a world championship, which he could reach this same year if the IBF title was vacant. Read more following the link.

As for the undercard of this event, super featherweight Carly Salmon defeated Krystina Jacobs by unanimous decision, super middleweight puncher Benjamin Bommber defeated Waiwit Nareeruk by TKO in the fourth round, tall super welterweight Campbell Somerville won in the second round his bout against Lawrence Glover, Kim-Alina Ross and Zoe Putorak draw in a very good duel and Jack Gipp beat Lepani Levatia in the first round. As for the Golden Boy and DAZN event, the veteran Filipino world challenger Mercito «No Mercy» Gesta returned to the ring scoring a knockdown and defeating the American Joel Díaz Jr. by unanimous decision. Despite the defeat, Díaz offered great effort, will and courage. Read more following the link.
The support bouts on this card ended with stoppage victories for the favorites, all of them young prospects. Lightweight Jousce González defeated Jairo “Dobermán” López by TKO in the sixth round, bantamweight Manuel Flores beat Víctor “Pelón” Ruiz in the third round and flyweight Jan Salvatierra won his fight against Ernie Márquez in the second round, the same rounds it took featherweight Jorge Chavez to beat Jonathan Tejeda. The vacant European super lightweight belt was captured by Enock Poulsen 12(4KO)-0, who defeated Franck Petitjean 23(6KO)-6(1)-3 by unanimous decision (116-113 and double 114-113). However, this was a controversial clash in which there were many fouls and in which Poulsen was assisted by his corner in the middle of the fight with a shoulder injury, something that provoked protests from Petitjean. Some point out that a rematch could happen next, but the EBU is an ineffective and stagnant organization and it is possible that they will not order such a solution and will simply stick to their plan, which is a fight between the champion and Massi Tachour.
In support of the fight Poulsen-Petitjean, IBF featherweight world titleholder Sarah Mahfoud 11(3KO)-0 retained her title with a unanimous decision victory (double 97-93 and 96-94) against tough Nina Meinke 12(3KO)-3(1). Thus, Mahfoud consolidated her reign and now will have a year to face voluntary defenses or to set her sights on a unification in a division in which she shares the throne with Erika Cruz (WBA) and the double monarch Amanda Serrano (WBC-WBO).
Regarding the WBC light flyweight championship between the Mexican Yesenia Gómez and Kim Clavel, it did not take place as the latter became ill. Thus, we will have to wait a few months to end up seeing this clash materialize.
Friday April 22
Former world champion Paul Butler far exceeded expectations and he had the most meritorious and effective performance of his entire career, largely controling the dangerous Jonas Sultan and capturing the interim WBO bantamweight title. In the event that John Riel Casimero is stripped of his crown, Butler will become a full-fledged monarch. Read more following the link.
On the undercard, very promising super bantamweight Peter McGrail overwhelmed and defeated the Mexican Uriel López by TKO in the fourth round. By contrast, another Mexican, Alejandro «El Tocino» Meneses, took advantage of the flaws of the undefeated, former British champion, Sam Maxwell to beat him by TKO in an epic battle. Regarding the WBO minimumweight championship, Masataka Taniguchi retained his title with a TKO in the eleventh round in a rematch against Kai Ishizawa, so four months after his coronation he made a statement regarding his reign. Read more following the link.

Also on Friday, Ashley Sexton 17(5KO)-3(2)-1 suffered a severe setback in his plans for this new stage of his career after his return, as he was defeated by TKO in the fifth round by South African Sabelo Ngebinyana 14(11KO)-5, who should soon receive a good opportunity by virtue of this meritorious success as a visitor. In this same card, Reece “Bomber” Bellotti 15(13KO)-5(2) fulfilled the predictions and defeated a less experienced Dean Dodge 9(3KO)-2(1)-1 by TKO in the seventh round, capturing the Southern Area super featherweight title and now setting his sights on the English belt.
Saturday April 26
WBC world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury defended his belt with a sixth-round TKO win over Dillian Whyte, suggesting after the fight that this will be his last fight in boxing, something that really seems unlikely. Read more following the link.
In the co-main event, British and Commonwealth Welterweight Champion Ekow Essuman once again imposed his pace and punching rate to win, this time against Darren Tetley. On the other hand, Isaac Lowe suffered his second tough loss in a row (the previous one came against “El Venado” López) at the hands of prospect Nick Ball, who knocked him down and beat him by TKO in the sixth round. In the early part of the Fury-Whyte main card there were two mismatches. In one David Adeleye defeated in the fourth round Chris Healey, boxer in very bad shape, and in the other Tommy Fury beat on points his low-level rival Daniel Bocianski. Read more following the link.
In another event, IBF number 1 super lightweight Jeremías Ponce also scored a victory on Saturday. Ponce did not face his original opponent Bazargur Jugder but the late substitute Achiko Odikadze, whom he defeated by TKO in the third round. As for the rest of the mentionable fights of the day:
-The Japanese championship Saka-Nakagawa was canceled, but the fight for the vacant super flyweight title between Kenta Nakagawa 21(12KO)-4(2)-1 and Hiroyuki Kudaka 28(11KO)-19(2) did take place. In it, as expected, Nakagawa won by unanimous decision (99-90 and double 98-91), so he began his third national reign and could possibly improve his position in the WBA ranking, in which he was 9th before this victory.
-Ghanaian Sena Agbeko 25(20KO)-2(1) defeated former world challenger John Thompson 19(7KO)-5(3) by TKO in the seventh round of a decisive clash for both boxers, so he stabilized a bit his career and maybe he can get a good opportunity in the second half of the year.
-By unanimous decision, super flyweight Elton Dharry 26(15KOKO) beat the undefeated Orlando Peñalba 11(2KO)-1-1, victory that is probably the most important of his career and that will allow him to enter in the long list of the WBC through a minor title.
-The 7th WBO flyweight Olimjon Nazarov 28(15KO)-5 defeated the Filipino Jerome Baloro 6(4KO)-2 by a minimum margin in a unanimous decision (triple 96-94) so, although he will maintain his position in the ranking, he continues achieving very close victories that suggest that he will suffer a defeat as soon as he faces a high level opponent.
