Hay que tener muy claro que en la gran mayoría de las ocasiones las revanchas se pactan únicamente para buscar que el lado A en las negociaciones, la gran estrella, el prospecto o el boxeador favorecido por la élite de la industria pugilística puedan enmendar lo sucedido en el primer combate, plan que muchas veces da resultados positivos. Por ello, y teniendo el estadounidense Jermell “Iron Man” Charlo 35(19KO)-1-1 mucho margen de mejora respecto al duelo del año pasado, grandes ventajas físicas y notable pegada a una mano, era muy posible que pudiese derrotar en la revancha al argentino Brian “El Boxi” Castaño 17(12KO)-1(1)-2. Así fue, logrando Charlo un KOT en el décimo asalto y la corona indiscutida del peso superwélter.
Lo que necesitaba Charlo en la pugna para tener éxito era más espacios y tiempo para pensar, algo que inesperadamente es lo que le dio inicialmente Castaño, que cometió el error de no presionar con insistencia desde el arranque. Así, el estadounidense pudo usar su alcance a través de jabs, directos al ataque y a la contra y ganchos zurdos. Contrariamente, cuando el argentino estuvo en la distancia corta o arremetió con decisión logró impactar manos peligrosas en hook zurdo y directo diestro, destacando el que conectó al final del segundo asalto.
Desde el tercer round Castaño empezó a presionar más, pero Charlo tuvo una reacción muy superior a la de su anterior combate, dando pasos laterales pronto, esquivando oportunamente, contragolpeando con precisión y anticipándose con sus hooks a los ataques rivales. De hecho, en el final del cuarto asalto el estadounidense impactó un brutal gancho zurdo en un cruce que tambaleó a Castaño. El visitante salió dispuesto a contestar a esto en el quinto episodio, pareciendo que puso ligeramente en apuros con sus andanadas de ganchos a Charlo, que también respondió con dureza con derechazos y hooks de izquierda en un duelo que estaba siendo excelente.
Aunque Charlo estaba mejorando su actuación precedente e iba por delante en las puntuaciones, desde antes de la mitad la tendencia pasó a ser favorable a Castaño, ofreciendo una muy intensa y constante presión con un alto volumen de golpes. Con todo, en el séptimo asalto el local aprovechó una disminución de los ataques para desequilibrar a su contrincante con un hook zurdo. Así, y con otros buenos contragolpes posteriores, destacando algún uppercut diestro, Charlo cambió la tendencia a su favor nuevamente, pareciendo que estaba en camino de lograr la victoria por decisión antes de romper el duelo en el décimo round.
Un hook zurdo arriba en corta quebró la resistencia de Castaño, que en la reanudación fue derribado por un uno-dos-uno acompañado de un gancho de izquierda abajo, terminando entonces el combate.
Como casi siempre que un púgil conocido y bien valorado por la prensa estadounidense gana una revancha, ahora se pretenderá vender la idea de que Charlo era el boxeador superior desde el principio, que lo ha demostrado innegablemente y que nada de lo que pasó antes de este segundo combate es importante. Pero, contrariamente, no es sólo que importe, sino que es trascendental lo que sucedió en la primera pugna, puesto que si los jueces corruptos no hubiesen dado un empate, Castaño habría logrado ser titular indiscutido, cambiando para siempre su carrera.
De todos modos, aunque Castaño fue superior claramente en el primer choque, es justo señalar que Charlo supo mejorar muchísimo su boxeo para el duelo de desquite, encontrando soluciones eficaces para diversos problemas y logrando una definición por KOT que fue importantísima tanto para resolver la competencia como para su futuro. Y es que ahora Charlo entrará al top 10 libra por libra de muchos medios y seguramente encabezará veladas en PPV, estando por ver si, más allá de las declaraciones, ascenderá ahora al peso medio o si por el contrario buscará alguna defensa de gran interés ante, por ejemplo, Fundora o Tszyu.

It must be very clear that, in the vast majority of cases, rematches are agreed only to seek that the A sides, the great stars, the prospects or the boxer favored by the elite of the boxing industry can amend what happened in the first fight, a plan that often gives positive results. For this reason, and as the American Jermell «Iron Man» Charlo 35(19KO)-1-1 had lot of room for improvement compared to last year’s duel, has size advantage and a notable one-punch power, it was very possible that he could win the rematch against Argentinian Brian “El Boxi” Castaño 17(12KO)-1(1)-2. So it was, as Charlo achieved a TKO in the tenth round and conquered the undisputed super welterweight crown.
What Charlo needed in the fight to be successful was more distance and time to think, something that Castaño unexpectedly gave him initially, making the mistake of not pressing insistently from the start. Thus, the American was able to use his reach through jabs, straight shots attacking and counterpunching and left hooks. On the contrary, when the Argentinian was at close range or attacked with determination, he managed to land dangerous hands in left hook and straight right, standing out the one he connected at the end of the second round.
From the third round, Castaño began to press more, but Charlo had a much better reaction than in his previous fight, quickly taking lateral steps, dodging opportunely, counter-punching with precision and attacking with his hooks. In fact, at the end of the fourth round the American connected a brutal left hook in an exchange that staggered Castaño. The visitor came out to the fifth round willing to answer this punch, putting in slight troubles Charlo with his flurries of hooks. However, the local responded hard with right hands and left hooks in a match that was proving excellent.
Although Charlo was improving his previous performance and was ahead in the scorecards, from before the half point the trend turned in favor of Castaño, who offered a very intense and constant pressure with a high volume of punches. However, in the seventh round the local took advantage of a stop in the attacks received to rock his opponent with a left hook. So with this and other good counterpunches, highlighting some hard uppercuts, Charlo turned the tide in his favor again, seeming as he was on his way to a decision victory before breaking up the duel in the tenth round.
A short left hook to the head dropped Castaño, who on the restart was knocked down again by a one-two-one followed by a left hook down, thus ending the fight.
As almost always when a well-known and well-rated fighter by the American press wins a rematch, now many will state that Charlo was the superior boxer from the beginning, that he has undeniably showed it and that nothing that happened before this second match is important. But, on the contrary, what happened in the first fight is crucial, since if the corrupt judges had not given a draw, Castaño would have been undisputed champion, changing his career forever.
In any case, although Castaño was clearly superior in the first bout, it is fair to point out that Charlo knew how to greatly improve his boxing for the rematch, finding effective solutions to various problems and achieving a TKO that is very important both for ending the competition with this rival and for his future. Now Charlo will enter in many top 10 pound for pound lists and will surely headline PPV evenings, remaining to be seen if, beyond what he states post-fight, he will now move up to middleweight or if, on the contrary, he will seek some defense of great interest against, for example, Fundora or Tszyu.
