“Mono” Ramos logró sólida victoria unánime contra Luke Santamaría

La pasada noche el estadounidense Jesús “Mono” Ramos 19(15KO)-0 dio más motivos para considerarle una muy interesante figura en ascenso en el peso superwélter. Y es que, enfrentándose a un Luke Santamaría 13(7KO)-3-1 competente y que ofreció todo lo que tenía, el zurdo Ramos fue claramente superior, mostró sus cualidades y se hizo merecedor de una victoria unánime con justas tarjetas de 98-92 y doble 97-93.
Nuevamente, Santamaría decidió usar un boxeo dinámico, si bien esta vez era la mejor solución para intentar generar complicaciones al fuerte, confiado y eficazmente agresivo Ramos. De todos modos, aunque la estrategia de Santamaría fue la correcta, aunque usó bien los pasos laterales y los jabs disuasorios y contragolpeó con astucia con cruzados, “Mono” le presionó de forma metódica, ordenada y calmada para llevarse la mejor parte con escogidos directos de mano adelantada, ganchos al torso y variados golpes de poder aislados a la cabeza, sobre todo muy precisos izquierdazos. Así, y sabiendo contestar pronto a los aciertos de su adversario, Ramos obtuvo una sólida ventaja en la primera mitad.
Esto no hizo desmoralizarse a Santamaría en la mayor pelea de su carrera, sino que éste intentó seguir ofreciendo lo mejor de sí en su reacción defensiva, contestando con gran bravura y no poca destreza en los breves intercambios de curvos e incluso, pasada la mitad, tratando eventualmente de sacudirse la presión con contraofensivas. Pese a ello, la precisión, la habilidad ofensiva, la fortaleza y el timing de Ramos continuaron siendo los factores determinantes en líneas generales, por lo que con sus sólidos rectos y sus bloqueos en larga y media-larga y sus potentes hooks en corta, el invicto se aseguró una incuestionable victoria.
Teniendo Ramos sólo 21 años, sería un error pensar que su desarrollo pugilístico se ha completado, aunque hace tantas cosas bien en su boxeo y tiene tanta madurez en su forma de combatir que muchas veces da la sensación de que es un combatiente experimentado y completamente consolidado. Por el momento, Ramos ya ha aparecido en las listas mundiales, ha tenido varias victorias muy convincentes y ha mostrado que podrá, cuanto menos, ser competitivo contra los boxeadores de la parte alta gracias a su equilibrio entre cualidades físicas y técnicas. Así, ahora sólo queda esperar para ver cuáles serán sus siguientes pasos adelante y cuándo se medirá a un top 15 en un test que nos dé todavía más respuestas respecto a su proyección.

Last night the American Jesús “Mono” Ramos 19(15KO)-0 gave more reasons to consider him a very interesting boxer on the rise in the super welterweight division. Facing a competent rival like Luke Santamaría 13(7KO)-3-1, who put in the ring everything he had, the southpaw Ramos was clearly superior, showed his qualities and earned a unanimous decision victory with fair scorecards of 98- 92 and double 97-93.
Once again, Santamaría decided to use a mobile boxing, although this time it was the best solution to try to create complications for the strong, confident and effectively aggressive Ramos. In any case, although Santamaría’s strategy was correct, although he used lateral steps and dissuasive jabs well and cunningly counterattacked with hooks, «Mono» pressed him in a methodical, ordered and calm way to made the difference with his properly chosen jabs, hooks to the body and various isolated power shots to the head, especially very precise left hands. Thus, and knowing how to respond quickly to the successes of his opponent, Ramos obtained a solid advantage in the first half.
This did not demoralize Santamaría in the biggest fight of his career, but he continued offering the best of his boxing in his defensive reaction, answering with great bravery and skill in the brief exchanges of hooks and even, after the half point, eventually trying to shake off the pressure with counteroffensives. Despite this, Ramos’ precision, offensive ability, strength and timing were again the determining factors, so with his solid straight punches and blocks at long and mid-long range and his powerful hooks at close range, the undefeated secured an unquestionable victory.
As Ramos is only 21 years old, it would be a mistake to think that his pugilistic development has been completed, although he does so many things well in his boxing and has so much maturity in his way of fighting that many times it seems that he is an experienced and fully consolidated fighter. For the moment, Ramos has already appeared on the world rankings, has had several very convincing victories and has shown that he will be able to, at the very least, be competitive against high level boxers thanks to his balance between physical and technical qualities. So now we only have to wait to see what his next steps forward will be and when he will face a test against a top 15 that will give us even more answers regarding his projection.
