El sábado la mayoría de miradas se centrarán en el campeonato por el título indiscutido entre George Kambosos y Devin Haney, pero en The Armory en Minneapolis, Estados Unidos, se producirá un combate que quizás sea más entretenido. Y es que se enfrentarán dos versátiles, fuertes y muy aguerridos boxeadores como el campeón unificado WBC-WBO del peso supergallo “Cool Boy” Stephen Fulton 20(8KO)-0 y el exmonarca WBA-IBF Daniel “The Baby Faced Assassin” Román 29(10KO)-3-1.
Este es uno de los mejores duelos posibles en el peso supergallo actual por el prestigio de los boxeadores, por sus niveles y por sus estilos combativos, pareciendo muy probable que ofrezcan una excelente batalla con muchísimos intercambios.
Aunque Futlon es un boxeador que puede boxear muy bien sin iniciativa, en los últimos tiempos ha ofrecido casi más asaltos con cruces de golpes en corta que peleando con espacios, destacando sobre todo su extraordinaria guerra ante Brandon Figueroa el pasado noviembre. Por su parte, Román ha tenido incluso más cantidad de duras peleas en su carrera, siendo especialmente exigente la que sostuvo ante TJ Doheny. De ese modo, y afirmando Román que considera que su oponente no supo lidiar bien con la presión en su último combate y que piensa ser incluso más agresivo que Figueroa, este se presenta como un choque muy intenso y con gran desgaste físico.
En ese escenario, teóricamente, Román podría tener la desventaja de un año de inactividad, si bien el púgil afirma que ha estado preparándose como nunca en el apartado de la condición física para poder ofrecer una enorme cantidad de trabajo. Esto sin duda le hará falta ante un Fulton que, por encima de todas sus cualidades, quizás sea casi incomparable en la división en cuanto a resistencia al cansancio, ya que parece inagotable incluso bajo constante y peligroso fuego enemigo.
De todos modos, Román es un boxeador muy sólido, con grandes bloqueos y que tiene mucha astucia en su selección de golpes, por lo que Fulton necesitará más que sus hábiles y precisos contragolpes si quiere marcar la diferencia claramente y evitar una nueva pelea altamente contendida y muy igualada. En este sentido, la velocidad de manos, el juego de piernas y los reflejos de Fulton podrían resultar trascendentales si en lugar de quedarse estático en las cuerdas abriese el ring y boxease de manera más técnica ante un Román con menos rapidez y con un estilo convencional.
No obstante, visto lo visto hasta ahora, es muy probable que Fulton vuelva a enzarzarse en intercambios en corta y media-corta con su oponente y que ambos traten de salir con el brazo en alto en una pelea de desgaste. En ella, aunque será exigido al máximo, por sus cualidades el campeón quizá tendrá las de ganar en una probable decisión. Y es que si Figueroa no logró convencer a los jueces lanzando más de 1.000 puños, será más improbable aún que lo logre un Román mucho más metódico y que difícilmente sostendrá una cadencia de golpeo tan alta.
Morrell al acecho de Benavídez
En el semifondo combatirá una de las grandes figuras en ascenso del boxeo cubano, el joven peso supermedio David Morrell 6(5KO)-0, que con sólo media docena de combates ya ha surgido como una de las mayores amenazas emergentes en la parte alta de la división. Tanto es así que, después de haber vapuleado a sus rivales hasta la fecha, algunos de ellos competentes y con ciertas cualidades, Morrell ya apunta con insistencia a una pelea contra su compañero de escuadra David Benavídez.
Seguramente todavía es pronto para que PBC le sitúe ante este oponente por cuestiones de interés económico (la compañía ganaría mucho más en estos momentos pactando un Benavídez-Plant), pero si Morrell sigue ganando e impresionando más pronto que tarde alcanzará las máximas pugnas.
Para continuar acercándose y preparándose para ellas, el invicto se medirá en el respaldo del Fulton-Román al estadounidense Kalvin “Hot Sauce” Henderson 15(11KO)-1-1, un púgil capaz, con buena base amateur, en forma y cuya única derrota profesional llegó a los puntos en un combate competido ante el invicto prospecto Isaiah Steen.
No obstante, aunque es un buen test y un evidente paso adelante para Morrell, el cubano se está mostrando tan incontenible ofensivamente, tan contundente y con tanta capacidad de desborde que, si bien Henderson podría encontrar huecos para algunos buenos contragolpes y tratará de ofrecer respuesta, la victoria del invicto es de lejos el resultado más probable.
La velada del Fulton-Román será televisada en Estados Unidos por Showtime el sábado a partir de las 21:00 ET/18:00 PT, las 3:00 de la madrugada en España.

On Saturday, many will be focused on the championship for the undisputed lightweight title between George Kambosos and Devin Haney, but at The Armory in Minneapolis, United States, there will be a fight that could be more entertaining. In it will clash two versatile, strong and very brave boxers like the unified WBC-WBO super bantamweight champion “Cool Boy” Stephen Fulton 20(8KO)-0 and the former WBA-IBF monarch Daniel “The Baby Faced Assassin” Román 29 (10KO)-3-1.
This is one of the best possible fights in the current super bantamweight division taking into account the prestige of the boxers, their levels and their styles, and it seems very likely that they will offer an excellent battle with many exchanges.
Although Futlon can box very well with distance, in recent times he has offered more rounds fighting at close range than with spaces, standing out his extraordinary war against Brandon Figueroa last November. For his part, Román has had more quantity of tough bouts in his career, being the one he had against TJ Doheny especially demanding. In this way, and with Roman stating that Fulton did not dealt well with pressure in his last fight and that he plans to be even more aggressive than Figueroa, this looks like a clash with the potential to be very intense and very physically demanding.
In that possible scenario, Roman could theoretically have a disadvantage due to his year of inactivity, although the fighter points out that he has been preparing like never before in his strength and conditioning training to be able to offer an enormous amount of work. This will certainly be needed against Fulton, who is perhaps unmatched in the division in terms of stamina, since he seems indefatigable even under dangerous enemy fire.
However, Roman is a very solid boxer with great blocks and a cunning punch selection, so Fulton will need more than his skillful and precise counter-punching if he wants to clearly make a difference and avoid another highly-contested, even fight. In this sense, Fulton’s hand speed, footwork and reflexes could be crucial if, instead of remaining static on the ropes, he moved and boxed technically against Roman, who has less speed and a more conventional style.
In any case, it is very likely that Fulton will engage again in exchanges at close and mid-close range and that both will try to come out with their arms raised in a fight of attrition. In it, although he will have to work really had, the champion may have the upper hand due to his qualities and could probably win a decision. That is to say, if Figueroa did not manage to convince the judges throwing more than 1,000 punches, it will be even more unlikely that a much more methodical fighter (and who will hardly sustain such a high punching rate) like Román will achieve the victory.
Morrell aiming for Benavídez
In the co-feature will fight one of the great rising stars of Cuban boxing, the young super middleweight David Morrell 6(5KO)-0, who with only half a dozen fights is one of the biggest emerging threats in the top of the division. So much so that, after having completely overwhelmed his rivals to date, some of them competent and with certain qualities, Morrell is already insistently aiming for a fight against his squad mate David Benavídez.
Surely it is still too soon for PBC to put him against this fighter for economic reasons (the company would gain much more at this time with a duel Benavídez-Plant), but if Morrell continues to win and impress sooner rather than later he will reach the biggest fights.
To continue getting closer and preparing for them, the undefeated will face the American Kalvin «Hot Sauce» Henderson 15(11KO)-1-1, a capable fighter, with a good amateur background, in shape and whose only loss as a professional came by decision in a close fight against undefeated prospect Isaiah Steen.
However, although it is a good test and an obvious step forward for Morrell, the Cuban boxer is proving to be so offensively irrepressible and forceful that, although Henderson could find holes for some good counterattacks and will try to offer answer, the unbeatens’s victory is by far the most likely outcome.
The Fulton-Roman card will be televised in the United States by Showtime on Saturday from 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT, 2:00 a.m. in the United Kingdom.
