Al margen de lo que hubiese sucedido durante su etapa de prospecto o de contendiente en ascenso, el británico Joe “Welsh Wizard” Cordina 15(9KO)-0 encaraba el sábado una pelea determinante para su carrera, oportunidad de oro en la que estaba obligado a cumplir ante el titular mundial japonés Kenichi Ogawa 26(18KO)-2(2)-1. En circunstancias similares a las suyas, muchos sucumbieron y otros muchos lograron decisivas victorias, pero pocos consiguieron una victoria tan rápida, demoledora y espectacular como Cordina, que venció en el segundo round con un KO candidato a mejor del año.
En un tenso primer asalto el rápido Cordina empezó a medir su directo diestro, aunque Ogawa le alcanzó con algunos amenazantes ganchos zurdos a la contra. De todos modos, esto no le hizo al local desistir en su empeño, sino que, dando muestra de su rapidez, explosividad y excelente ejecución de golpeo, en el segundo asalto Cordina impactó una perfecta derecha que estalló contra Ogawa y lo derrumbó sobre el tapiz sin posibilidad de continuar.
El reinado de Cordina le ofrecerá muchas opciones, aunque no todas son necesariamente buenas para sus intereses. Es decir, quizás podría realizar alguna defensa voluntaria sencilla, encarar una puesta en juego exigente ante Shavkat Rakhimov (en teoría su aspirante obligatorio) o Zelfa Barrett (compañero de escuadra), o incluso encarar una triple unificación de cinturones ante el titular WBC-WBO Shakur Stevenson. En cualquier caso, siga un camino u otro, Cordina ha tenido ya una noche memorable ante su público y se ha coronado monarca profesional, sumando un nuevo éxito a los logros que ya obtuvo como amateur y haciéndose una figura de aún más relieve para el boxeo galés.

Regardless of what might have happened during his stage as a prospect or as a rising contender, the British boxer Joe “Welsh Wizard” Cordina 15(9KO)-0 faced a decisive fight for his career on Saturday, crucial opportunity in which he had to defeat the Japanese world titleholder Kenichi Ogawa 26(18KO)-2(2)-1. In circumstances similar to this, many succumbed and many others achieved important victories, but few obtained a victory as fast, devastating and spectacular as Cordina, who won in the second round with a knockout candidate to the best of the year.
In a tense first round the fast Cordina began to measure his straight right hand, though Ogawa landed some threatening counter left hooks. In any case, this did not make the local give up in his effort, but rather, showing his speed, explosiveness and excellent punching technique, in the second round Cordina connected a perfect right hand that exploded against Ogawa and threw him to the mat without possibility to continue.
Cordina’s reign will offer him many options, though not all of them are necessarily good for his interests. Perhaps he could make some easy voluntary defenses, face a demanding bout against Shavkat Rakhimov (in theory his mandatory challenger) or Zelfa Barrett (squadmate), or even clash with Shakur Stevenson in a triple unification of belts. In any case, and whatever the path he follows, Cordina has already had a memorable night in front of his fans and has been crowned world champion as a professional, adding another success to the achievements he obtained as an amateur and becoming an even more prominent figure for Welsh boxing.
