Zelfa Barrett se proclamó campeón de Europa superpluma. Dalton Smith volvió a vencer antes del límite

Como 2º IBF y miembro de Matchroom Boxing, el británico Zelfa “Brown Flash” Barrett 28(16KO)-1 no tiene nada lejos disputar el mundial del peso superpluma, estando en manos de su promotor perseguir esa opción con mayor o menor prisa y empeño. En cualquier caso, para solidificar su posición en el acceso a la pelea titular y comparar su rendimiento al de Joe Cordina, Barrett se proclamó campeón de Europa arrebatándole el cinturón al belga-kirguiso Faroukh Kourbanov 19(3KO)-4 con una merecida decisión unánime (118-110, 119-109 y 120-108).
Como tantas otras veces en su carrera, Barrett no tuvo al comienzo una gran frecuencia de golpeo y su gestión de los tiempos del round estuvo lejos de ser perfecta, por lo que en ciertos momentos un Kourbanov sin demasiado ritmo pudo superarle con esporádicas arremetidas y combinaciones de hooks. No obstante, cuando Barrett aprovechó sus cualidades, que no son pocas, y tiró el jab con rapidez, esquivó con hábiles acciones y conectó explosivos ganchos y uppercuts al ataque o a la contra, no sólo fue superior sino que incomodó visiblemente a Kourbanov.
Aunque recibió duros uppercuts a la contra que pudieron hacerle dudar, el visitante necesitaba poner presión si quería retener su cinturón, pero en líneas generales no ofreció su boxeo agresivo y malgastó asaltos desplazándose y sacando aisladas ofensivas que no compensaban las rápidas combinaciones en directo-hook o en gancho-uppercut de Barrett. Así, sin que Kourbanov ajustase su estrategia y sin poder superar en destreza y rapidez a su contrincante, que cada vez tenía más confianza, acometividad y aciertos, el enfrentamiento se encaminó monótonamente a una victoria por decisión del retador.
Smith siguió avanzando
Antes del Kourbanov-Barrett, el destacado prospecto del peso superligero Dalton “Thunder” Smith 11(9KO)-0 dio una nueva muestra de sus cualidades venciendo en el sexto asalto al argentino Mauro Perouene 14(7KO)-6(2)-1, quien, eso sí, había sido avisado con poca antelación y ascendía de peso.
Inicialmente Smith contragolpeó con afilados directos los ataques de su contrincante, por lo que poco después pudo tomar la iniciativa y calmadamente imponer su tenso jab y sus explosivos golpes de poder en directo, gancho zurdo, cruzado diestro, etc. Perouene se vio situado en una muy complicada posición táctica, ya que si decidía atacar a Smith, éste evitaba sus manos con oportunos pasos atrás o hacia los lados y contragolpeaba con muchísimo peligro, mientras que si optaba por esperar el momento para intentar sorprender a la contra, el británico le alcanzaba con amenazantes manos.
Con el rostro muy enrojecido, una hemorragia nasal y habiendo sido golpeado por temibles puños, destacando brutales uppercuts, Perouene fue derribado en el sexto asalto por una mano diestra que le alcanzó a la vez que las piernas de ambos púgiles chocaban. Aun así, aunque el knockdown no fue demasiado duro, el valiente Perouene había sido preocupantemente castigado y el combate fue detenido antes del siguiente round.

As 2nd IBF and member of the Matchroom Boxing stable, the Brit Zelfa “Brown Flash” Barrett 28(16KO)-1 is not far from accessing to the super featherweight world championship, being in the hands of his promoter to pursue that option with greater or lesser haste and determination. In any case, to solidify his position near the title fight and compare his performance to Joe Cordina’s, Barrett became European champion by taking the belt from the Belgian-Kyrgyz Faroukh Kourbanov 19(3KO)-4 with a deserved unanimous decision (118-110, 119-109 and 120-108).
Like in many other times in his career, at the beginning Barrett did not have an adequate punch rate and his round time management was far from perfect, so at some moments Kourbanov, despite not having much rhythm, was able to overcome him with sporadic attacks and combinations of hooks. However, when Barrett took advantage of his qualities and threw fast jabs, dodged deftly and landed explosive hooks and uppercuts attacking or countering, he was not only superior but made Kourbanov visibly uncomfortable.
Although he received hard uppercuts on the counter that could make him hesitate, the visitor needed to put pressure if he wanted to retain his belt, but in general he did not offer his aggressive boxing and wasted rounds moving and throwing isolated offensives that did not compensate Barrett’s fast combinations in straight-hook or uppercut-hook. Thus, without Kourbanov adjusting his strategy, without being able to surpass his opponent in skill and speed and with Barrett having more and more confidence, activity and successes, the fight monotonously headed to a victory by decision for the challenger.
Smith kept moving forward
Before the Kourbanov-Barrett, the outstanding super lightweight prospect Dalton «Thunder» Smith 11(9KO)-0 showed again his qualities by defeating in the sixth round the Argentinian Mauro Perouene 14(7KO)-6(2)-1, who it is fair to point that entered the bout with little notice and moving up in weight.
Initially Smith countered his opponent’s attacks with sharp straight rights, so soon he was able to take the initiative and calmly land his tense jab and explosive power shots in right hand, left hook, etc. Perouene was placed in a very difficult tactical position, since if he decided to attack Smith, his rival avoided his hands with opportune steps back or to the sides and counterpunched with great danger, while if he chose to wait for the moment to try to surprise with counters, the British connected threatening hands.
With a very reddened face, a nosebleed and having been hit by hard punches, highlighting brutal uppercuts, Perouene was knocked down in the sixth round by a right hand that hit him as both fighters’ legs collided. Still, though the knockdown hadn’t been too dangerous, the plucky Perouene had been worryingly punished and the fight didn’t make it to the next round.
