El top 3 libra por libra japonés Naoya “Monster” Inoue 23(20KO)-0 encaraba una pelea trascendental para su carrera ante un futuro miembro del Salón de la Fama como Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire 42(28KO)-7(2), que había tenido un renacimiento boxístico sin precedentes y que había sido el boxeador que más dificultades le había causado en su carrera. Sin embargo, aunque era un reto complicadísimo, en él Inoue demostró que no es sólo uno de los mejores púgiles del mundo de la actualidad (seguramente el mejor) sino que además es uno de los grandes boxeadores de la historia de las divisiones más ligeras con un triunfo en sólo dos asaltos.
El tenso tanteo inicial dejó rapidísimas acciones de Inoue, que impactó afilados jabs, ganchos zurdos o directos diestros antes de anotarse un knockdown al final del primer asalto con una derecha recta a la sien. En el segundo asalto Inoue salió a terminar lo que había comenzado y con formidables ganchos zurdos y directos diestros estremeció terriblemente a Donaire, resultando incomprensible cómo se podía mantener en pie. Sin embargo, no caer solo le supuso recibir más demoledores golpes de poder hasta que finalmente se derrumbó en el tapiz y el árbitro hizo lo correcto y paró el combate.
Ahora que posee las tres coronas mundiales y que ha hecho parecer fácil la destrucción de un boxeador que le había causado serias lesiones en el primer choque (y que además venía de dos facilísimos knockouts ante rivales de nivel), el siguiente objetivo de Inoue es la corona indiscutida del peso gallo. Para ello se proyecta ya una unificación total con el monarca WBO del peso gallo Paul Butler hacia finales de año, combate en el que Inoue partirá como amplísimo favorito para alcanzar otro hito en su fantástica carrera.

The Japanese, pound-for-pound top 3, Naoya “Monster” Inoue 23(20KO)-0 was facing a crucial fight for his career against future Hall of Famer Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire 42(28KO)-7(2), who had had an unprecedented boxing reboot and who had been the fighter who had caused him more difficulties. However, although it was a very complicated challenge, Inoue showed that he is not only one of the best fighters in the world today (probably the best) but also one of the greatest boxers in the history of the lightest divisions with a win in just two rounds.
In the tense opening of the bout, the blazing fast Inoue landed very sharp jabs, left hooks or straight right hands before scoring a knockdown late in first-round with a straight right to the temple. In the second round Inoue came out wanting to finish what he had started and with formidable left hooks and straight right hands rocked terribly Donaire, who incomprehensibly resisted on his feet. However, not going down just had as a consequence taking more crushing power shots until he finally was dropped on the mat and the referee did the right thing and stopped the match.
Now that he owns three world belts and that he has made seem easy the destruction of a boxer who had caused him serious injuries in the first match (and who was coming from two very easy knockouts against high-level rivals), Inoue’s next objective is the undisputed bantamweight title. In this sense, a total unification with the WBO bantamweight champion Paul Butler is already being projected towards the end of the year, a fight in which Inoue will be wide favorite to reach another milestone in his fantastic career.
