El invicto Mark Vicelles no fue el único peso minimosca filipino que peleó este viernes, dado que su compatriota Christian “The Bomb” Araneta 22(17KO)-2(1) logró una clara victoria por decisión unánime sobre el voluntarioso exaspirante mundial Toto Landero 11(2KO)-8(1)-2 en el semifondo del evento organizado en Mandaue City. Las puntuaciones fueron de justo doble 98-92 y un 99-91.
Sin duda alguna el mejor puño en la pelea fue la izquierda recta del zurdo Araneta, golpe que impactó nítido especialmente al ataque pero también cuando contragolpeaba. Gracias a su afilado directo, a adecuados reposicionamientos y a algunas buenas esquivas de hombros y cintura, Araneta logró capturar la mayoría de los episodios con cierta claridad. La excepción en el control de la pelea del favorito llegó cuando Landero logró llevar las acciones a la distancia corta, momentos en los que sacó combinaciones de hooks tratando de crear un punto de inflexión.
No obstante, por lo general Landero no logró impactar puños demasiado contundentes, erró bastantes manos y recibió algunas peligrosas contras en gancho de mano adelantada o cruzado zurdo, todo ello sin poder evitar que Araneta volviese a llevar pronto la pelea a la distancia larga o media-larga. Por ello, si bien Landero intentó cerrar fuerte buscando un improbable éxito crucial, los diez rounds se terminaron consumiendo y con ello la victoria de Araneta resultó un hecho.
Al igual que Vicelles, Araneta también está bien clasificado, pero en su caso sólo aparece en la lista IBF, en la que es 5º por detrás de su compatriota. Así, Araneta dependerá de qué camino elija Vicelles para poder acceder a una eliminatoria final en la que intentar conseguir una oportunidad obligatoria ante el vencedor del mundial por el vacante cinto minimosca Nontshinga-Flores.

Undefeated Mark Vicelles wasn’t the only Filipino light flyweight fighting this Friday, as his compatriot Christian “The Bomb” Araneta 22(17KO)-2(1) scored a clear unanimous decision win over the former world challenger Toto Landero 11(2KO)-8(1)-2 in the co-feature of the event organized in Mandaue City. The scorecards were a fair double 98-92 and one 99-91.
Without a doubt, the best punch in the fight was the straight left hand of the southpaw Araneta, a shot that landed clearly, especially on attack, but also when he counterattacked. Thanks to his straight hands, proper repositioning, and some nice shoulder and waist dodges, Araneta managed to win most of the rounds with clarity. The exception to the favorite’s control of the fight came when Landero took the actions to close range, moments in which he unleashed hook combinations trying to create a turning point.
However, in general, Landero did not connect hands too forceful, he missed quite a few punches and received some dangerous counters in lead hook or left cross, all this without being able to prevent Araneta from soon returning to the long or mid-long distance. Therefore, although Landero tried to close the bout with more intensity looking for an unlikely crucial success, the ten rounds ended and Araneta’s victory became a fact.
Like Vicelles, Araneta is also well ranked, but in his case he only appears on the IBF list, in which he is 5th behind his compatriot. Thus, Araneta will depend on which path Vicelles chooses to be able to access a final eliminator in which try to achieve a mandatory opportunity against the winner of the world championship Nontshinga-Flores for the vacant IBF light flyweight belt.
