Puede que técnicamente la titular indiscutida del peso wélter Jessica McCaskill 12(5KO)-2 incluso esté empeorando en lugar de mejorar debido a los éxitos que le ha dado embarrar peleas a base de agresividad sin control. No obstante, en la noche del sábado su tosquedad no le impidió lograr una victoria en el tercer asalto sobre la mexicana Alma Ibarra 10(5KO)-2 que, a diferencia de su valiente actuación ante Cornejo, en conjunto ofreció una actuación peor que mala.
El choque no tuvo historia, puesto que McCaskill se abalanzó sobre su rival tirando volados con tanta acometividad como falta de orden, ataques que sobrepasaron en todo momento a una Ibarra que no sabía cómo explotar debidamente al contragolpe los enormes huecos dejados por su oponente. De hecho, la mexicana recibió puños nítidos desde el primer round, en el que un fuerte cruzado diestro la estremeció duramente. En algún momento, el intento de respuesta disuasiva de Ibarra logró llegar contra su muy mal posicionada y abierta rival, pero en líneas generales McCaskill siguió castigando con sus agresivos hooks hasta que, tras el tercer round, Ibarra se negó a seguir.
A continuación se podría hablar del futuro y sobre posibles rivales, pero el hecho es que el foco de atención debe ponerse en el hecho de que este fue un combate que no ayudó en nada al boxeo femenino, todo lo contrario. Después del duelo los foros y redes sociales se llenaron de burlas y críticas al pugilismo femenino, al atroz “boxeo” de McCaskill y, sobre todo, a la actitud de Ibarra, que se negó a seguir combatiendo afirmando que quería volverse a casa con su hijo por los agarres de su rival…
Por lo tanto, aunque Eddie Hearn está obsesionado con impulsar el pugilisimo femenino a toda costa (por motivos que no son estrictamente deportivos), de nada sirve intentar hacerlo emparejando combates aleatorios y poniéndolos en carteleras importantes cuando no están a la altura de esa posición, algo que el promotor hace demasiado a menudo y que en lugar de dar notoriedad a las boxeadoras las expone a una pérdida del prestigio ganado en los choques de verdadera calidad y que sí merecen atención.
Ciertamente, alguien podría afirmar que Ibarra lo hizo muchísimo peor de lo esperado y que al fin y al cabo en juego estaba un título indiscutido, lo que podría justificar la posición del combate en el cartel. Pero hay que recordar que en el peso wélter femenino hay menos de 70 boxeadoras en todo el mundo (en el masculino hay más de 2.000) y que McCaskill ha visto impulsada su carrera por cruciales victorias controvertidas y, sobre todo, por un apoyo promocional descomunal por parte de Hearn, que ha intentado crear a toda costa una “estrella” artificialmente a la vez que ha dejado escapar de su escuadra a boxeadoras con verdadero talento.
Ford venció con facilidad
Teniendo en cuenta que el combate del peso pluma entre Raymond Ford 12(6KO)-0-1 y Richard Medina 13(7KO)-1 entró en la cartelera principal en sustitución del cancelado Martínez-Arroyo II, el cambio no fue precisamente para bien. Y es que en lugar de la entretenida guerra que habría sido ese mundial del peso mosca se produjo un choque monótono y de un solo lado en el que Ford se impuso por amplísima decisión unánime (doble 100-90 y un 99-91).
En una pelea táctica, desde la distancia media y larga y en el centro del ring, el zurdo Ford pudo utilizar su gran superioridad en técnica, reflejos y velocidad de manos para llegar con nítidos izquierdazos aislados, fugaces jabs y contragolpes en hook y uppercut ante Medina, que no encontró la manera de contrarrestar las virtudes pugilísticas de su oponente y que no se decidió a incrementar el ritmo de forma duradera. Eventualmente, Medina se lanzó al ataque acortando los espacios y llegó con algunos hooks, pero estas entradas normalmente terminaron frenadas muy rápidamente por clinches y el boxeador pronto volvió a quedar expectante e irresolutivo a merced de la habilidad de Ford, que continuó imponiendo su precisión y su gestión defensiva.

The technique of the undisputed welterweight titleholder Jessica McCaskill 12(5KO)-2 may even be getting worse rather than better due to her successes in messy fights with uncontrolled aggression. However, on Saturday night her crudeness did not prevent her from scoring a third-round win over the Mexican Alma Ibarra 10(5KO)-2 who, unlike her gutsy performance against Cornejo, altogether offered a performance worse than bad.
The clash had no story, since McCaskill charged throwing wide hooks with as much aggressiveness as lack of order, attacks that overwhelmed Ibarra, who did not know how to properly exploit counterpunching the enormous breaches of her rival. In fact, the Mexican received crisp punches from the first round, in which a strong right overhand rocked her hard. At some point, Ibarra’s attempted dissuasive response landed against a very poorly positioned and open opponent, but in general McCaskill continued to punish with her aggressive hooks until, after the third round, Ibarra refused to continue.
Now we could talk about the future and about possible rivals, but the focus should be on the fact that this was a fight that did not help female boxing at all, quite the opposite. After the duel, the forums and social networks were filled with criticism toward female boxing, McCaskill’s atrocious «boxing» and, above all, Ibarra’s attitude, who refused to continue fighting stating that she wanted to return home with her son due to the holdings of her rival…
So while Eddie Hearn is obsessed with pushing women’s boxing at all costs (for reasons that aren’t strictly connected to sport), there’s no use trying to do it putting random matches on important cards when they don’t measure up to that position, something that the promoter does too often and that, instead of giving the boxers notoriety, exposes them to a loss of the prestige earned in true quality fights that do deserve attention.
Certainly, some could affirm that Ibarra did much worse than expected and that, after all, an undisputed title was at stake, so the bout did deserve its position in the event . But it must be remembered that in the female welterweight there are less than 70 boxers in the world (in the male division there are more than 2,000) and that McCaskill career has been propelled by crucial controversial victories and, above all, by an enormous promotional support by Hearn, who has tried to artificially create a “star” while has let truly talented female boxers abandon his stable.
Ford obtained easy victory
Considering that the featherweight bout between Raymond Ford 12(6KO)-0-1 and Richard Medina 13(7KO)-1 entered the main card in place of the canceled championship Martínez-Arroyo II, the change was not for the better. In few occasions Medina went on the attack closing the distance and connected some hooks, but these attempts were usually stopped very quickly by clinches and the boxer was soon expectant and irresolute again in front of the skillful Ford, who continued to impose his precision and his defensive effectiveness.
