Con un año de inactividad a sus espaldas, al británico Joe Joyce 14(13KO)-0 se le situó delante un boxeador resistente como el rumano Christian Hammer 27(17KO)-10(5) intentando que éste pudiese darle rounds, si bien el visitante sólo pudo aprovechar brevemente las brechas defensivas de su rival antes de ser llevado a la derrota en el cuarto round.
Como siempre Joyce trató de avanzar sobre su adversario frontal e intentar imponer sus dimensiones y su trabajo, pero su planteamiento lento y torpe le permitió a Hammer contragolpearle con nítidos cruzados que le alcanzaron potentes en el primer asalto.
Si Hammer en lugar de ser una piedra de toque en baja forma hubiese sido un pegador de élite, quizás Joyce podría haberse visto en más problemas, pero el rumano terminó dejándose llevar pronto a las cuerdas, donde recibió hooks y uppercuts pese a que nuevamente pudo contragolpear con claras derechas rectas. En cualquier caso, Joyce se anotó un knockdown con un ilegal golpe a la nuca al final del tercer round.
Este fue el principio del fin, puesto que en el cuarto episodio Hammer tocó la lona por un golpe al torso (tras un choque de cabezas) y en la reanudación fue apaleado por hooks hasta volver a recibir cuenta. Finalmente, después de que el visitante pusiese la rodilla en la lona por tercera vez en este mismo round por un hook al torso, el árbitro detuvo el combate.
Tras el duelo Frank Warren señaló que Joyce volverá al ring en septiembre, esperando posteriormente alcanzar el mundial ante el vencedor del Usyk-Joshua II.

With a year of inactivity, the Briton Joe Joyce 14(13KO)-0 was put in front of a resistant boxer like the Romanian Christian Hammer 27(17KO)-10(5) hoping that this rival could give him some rounds, although the visitor was only able to briefly take advantage of the defensive breaches of his opponent before being defeated in the fourth round.
As always Joyce tried to advance frontal seeking to impose his size and his work, but his slow and clumsy approach allowed Hammer to counter him with clear right hands that hit him hard in the first round.
If Hammer instead of being an out-of-form stepping stone was an elite puncher, perhaps Joyce could have been in more trouble, but the Romanian ended up soon on the ropes, where he received hooks and uppercuts despite being able to counterpunch again with clear straight rights. In any case, Joyce scored a knockdown with an illegal blow to the back of the head at the end of the third round.
This was the beginning of the end, since in the fourth round Hammer touched the canvas due to a body shot (after a clash of heads) and at the restart he was beaten by hooks until he received another count. Finally, after the visitor put his knee on the canvas for the third time in this same round due to a hook to the body, the referee stopped the fight.
After the duel, Frank Warren pointed out that Joyce will return to the ring in September, hoping to later fight in a world championship against the winner of the rematch between Usyk and Joshua.
