Si el estadounidense Joet González 25(15KO)-3 no hubiese decidido mantener una reducida actividad en dos o tres de episodios, sin duda podría haber logrado el triunfo ante el británico-ghanés Isaac “Royal Storm” Dogboe 24(15KO)-2(1). Sin embargo, González dejó un margen a su oponente que en una muy igualada pugna tuvo consecuencias determinantes, ya que Dogboe venció por decisión dividida con puntuaciones de doble 96-94 y un 94-96.
En el primer round González cedió la iniciativa y, casi sin tirar manos, dejó que Dogboe probase con sus combinaciones de hooks, elección táctica del local que no fue precisamente acertada viendo las cartulinas finales. Sea como sea, desde el segundo round el estadounidense empezó a intentar presionar buscando llevar a su rival a las cuerdas. Con su gancho zurdo y su directo diestro González tuvo algunos resultados en el citado episodio, mientras que en el tercer asalto el ghanés le replicó en corta con bravura con explosivos curvos enlazados. Aun así, González siguió avanzando y trabajando y en el cuarto asalto incluso estremeció a su rival con un hook.
Así se había entrado en una pelea con notable intensidad y bastantes cruces de golpes, en la que Dogboe, de espaldas a las cuerdas, conectaba llamativos puños y González sacaba un mayor número de manos mientras presionaba. Esta batalla, aunque inicialmente pareciese favorable a un Dogboe que había capturado rounds por sus golpes significativos, a largo plazo podría tener consecuencias negativas para el africano, por lo que en el sexto round éste intentó desplazarse más, pero fue golpeado por duros hooks enlazados que parecieron desgastarle un tanto. Esto no pasó desapercibido para González que siguió atacando firme en corta con hooks, cruzados y uppercuts acompañados de buenos bloqueos.
Como tantas otras veces en sus carreras, González, que suele tener buenas segundas mitades, estaba yendo a más ante un Dogboe que, como siempre, se cansó en la segunda parte. No obstante, González incomprensiblemente decidió mostrarse mucho menos activo en el octavo round (permitiendo que “The Royal Storm” cogiese algo de aire y se anticipase a él en larga) y en el noveno asalto tardó demasiado en volver a la carga, error trascendental que a ojos de los jueces no logró compensar con un décimo round en el que fue más agresivo pero su oponente le frenó con clinches.
Aunque el empate o el triunfo por la mínima de González pueden ser también perfectamente justificables, no se puede considerar controvertida la victoria de Dogboe, dado que fue un combate muy disputado y los errores del primero perfectamente pudieron decantar la balanza para muchos. Sea como sea, esta victoria situará a Dogboe como 1º WBO del peso pluma y como top 3 WBC, aunque por ahora no tiene un camino claro hacia una pelea títular.
El campeón WBO es Emanuel Navarrete, por lo que parece inviable que Top Rank quiera buscar una tercera pugna entre éste y Dogboe, así que en esta vía al ghanés sólo le quedará esperar que el monarca abandone su corona y suba al peso superpluma tras su defensa ante Eduardo Báez. Por otro lado, como el choque ante Joet González fue una eliminatoria semifinal WBC, Dogboe no tiene asegurada una oportunidad ante el nuevo titular Rey Vargas y quizás deberá encarar antes una eliminatoria final.

If the American Joet González 25(15KO)-3 had not decided to have a reduced activity in two or three rounds, he could undoubtedly have won against the British-Ghanaian Isaac «Royal Storm» Dogboe 24 (15KO)-2(1). However, González gave a margin for his opponent, which in a very even fight had decisive consequences, since Dogboe won by split decision with double scores of 96-94 and one 94-96.
In the first round, González renounced to the initiative and, almost without throwing hands, let Dogboe attack with his combinations of hooks, tactical choice by the local fighter that was not exactly adequate taking into account the final scorecards. Be that as it may, from the second round the American began to put pressure looking to take his rival to the ropes. With his left hook and straight right hand, González had some results in the aforementioned round, while in the third the Ghanaian answered bravely in short range with explosive hooks. Still, Gonzalez kept advancing and working and in the fourth round he even rocked his rival with a hook.
Thus, the fight became notable intense and with many exchanges, in which Dogboe, with his back to the ropes, connected eye-catching hands while González threw a greater number of punches while he pressed. This battle, although initially could seem favorable to Dogboe, who captured rounds due to his significant punches, in the long term it could have negative consequences for the African boxer, so in the sixth round he tried to move more, but he was hit by hard hooks that wore him down a bit. This did not go unnoticed by González, who continued to attack firmly at close distance with hooks and uppercuts accompanied by good blocks.
Like so many other times in his career, González, who usually has good second halves, was having an improved performance as the rounds went by against Dogboe who, as always, got tired in the second part. However, González incomprehensibly decided to be much less active in the eighth round (allowing «The Royal Storm» to recover a bit and punch first from long range) and in the ninth he took too long to charge again, a crucial mistake that in the eyes of the judges he did not compensate with a tenth round in which he was more aggressive but his opponent slowed him down with clinches.
Although a draw or a narrow González’s victory may also be perfectly justifiable, Dogboe’s triumph cannot be considered controversial, given that it was a closely contested match and the errors of the former could have perfectly tipped the balance for many. Be that as it may, this victory will place Dogboe as the number 1 WBO at featherweight and as a top 3 WBC, although for now he does not have a clear path to a title fight.
The WBO champion is Emanuel Navarrete, so it seems unfeasible that Top Rank wants to seek a third fight between him and Dogboe. Thus, in this route the Ghanaian will have to wait for the monarch to vacate his crown and moving up to super featherweight after his defense against Eduardo Baez. On the other hand, as the match against Joet González was a WBC semifinal eliminator, Dogboe does not have guaranteed a chance against new titleholder Rey Vargas and may have to fight in a final eliminator.
