Comparada con algunas recientes veladas en PPV de Premier Boxing Champions, cuyos respaldos contaron con combates horriblemente emparejados, la cartelera que este grupo promocional ofrecerá este sábado a través de Showtime parece muchísimo más interesante, algo que es tan extraño como llamativo. Sea como sea, con dos campeonatos mundiales, una pelea de desarrollo para un prospecto con pegada y un duelo de “última oportunidad”, el evento desde el Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino de Hollywood, Estados Unidos, presenta evidentes alicientes.
Figueroa no combatirá contra Broner
No habiendo tenido suficiente con desperdiciar su talento natural con una conducta fuera del ring carente de respeto por sí mismo y los demás, el excampeón mundial Adrien Broner recientemente está haciendo todo lo que puede para tirar por tierra las buenas oportunidades que inmerecidamente se le siguen brindado.
Así, aunque se sospecha con motivo que no había entrenado adecuadamente y ni siquiera estaba cerca del peso superligero en el que se suponía que debía medirse este sábado al exmonarca mundial Omar “Panterita” Figueroa Jr. 28(19KO)-2(1)-1, Broner ha utilizado la excusa de moda actual entre quienes quieren un cheque en blanco para justificar sus malas actitudes, es decir los supuestos “problemas mentales”, para salirse del combate en la semana de la pelea. Esto ha provocado la ira de Figueroa, púgil con diagnosticados problemas mentales y que ha tenido que lidiar con el alcoholismo, y ha obligado a PBC a recurrir a un remplazo, el extitular mundial kazajo Sergey “Samurai” Lipinets 16(12KO)-2(1)-1.
Teniendo en cuenta las serias dificultades de Figueroa, que no pelea desde hace 15 meses y que llega de dos derrotas seguidas, Lipinets es un oponente adecuado, ya que lleva inactivo casi la misma cantidad de tiempo y en su último combate fue vapuleado por Jaron Ennis. Aun así, aunque el rendimiento de “Samurai” está disminuyendo gravemente, es un boxeador fuerte y voluntarioso al que quién sabe si Figueroa podrá superar en estos momentos de seria crisis por los que pasa.
Dicho esto, si bien el combate podría llegar a ser entretenido y tener buenos intercambios, de ningún modo es comprensible o justificable que el WBC le haya otorgado la etiqueta de eliminatoria a este encuentro entre dos boxeadores que ni siquiera están clasificados entre los 40 primeros del organismo.
Un primer relevo para Josh Taylor
Tras el reinado como titular indiscutido del peso superligero de Josh Taylor, empieza ahora una nueva era en la división con el primer campeonato mundial por uno de los cinturones dejados vacantes por el británico. Este cetro es el WBA, por el que combatirán el dominicano Alberto “La Avispa” Puello 20(10KO)-0 y el uzbeko Batyr Akhmedov 9(8KO)-1, quien accede a este encuentro con gran controversia debido a la arbitraria decisión de la Asociación de situarlo en el mundial pese a estar ranqueado 6º.
En cualquier caso, aunque Ismael Barroso es quien debería haber pugnado en el mundial (el venezolano disputará un rodaje en el respaldo no televisado), esto no quiere decir que la pelea sobre el ring vaya a ser mala. Al contrario, este podría ser un buen choque de estilos entre un Puello que suele recurrir más al boxeo en larga y un Akhmedov al que le gusta acortar los espacios y trabajar con los golpes de poder en la distancia corta y media-corta.
De momento, en las casas apuestas está situado como favorito Akhmedov en base a su potencia de golpeo y a su mayor experiencia de calidad pese a su mucho menor número de combates. No obstante, el margen entre ambos es escaso al valorarse que el uzbeko padeció una derrota ante un Mario Barrios con algunas similitudes con el boxeo de Puello y teniendo en cuenta que este último tiene ventaja en alcance y buenas cualidades técnicas y realmente no se sabe a ciencia cierta cuál es su nivel real antes de esta gran prueba de fuego para su carrera.
Roger Gutiérrez sin el paraguas de Golden Boy
No son pocos los que sienten que si el venezolano Roger “The Kid” Gutiérrez 26(20KO)-3(2)-1 no hubiese contado con el decidido apoyo de Golden Boy Promotions no habría llegado a su posición de campeón mundial WBA del peso superpluma, refiriéndose estos especialmente a las polémicas cartulinas de su primer choque ante René Alvarado. En cualquier caso, mereciese Gutiérrez la victoria o no, tras el truncado intento de llevar su primera defensa obligatoria a Venezuela, finalmente el monarca encarará dicha puesta en juego en una velada organizada por la promotora de su rival, el dominicano Héctor Luis García 15(10KO)-0.
Con la “ventaja de campo” a su favor y llegando de anular completamente a un boxeador considerado insigne prospecto como Chris Colbert, García está situado como favorito en las apuestas. Y es que, si no es que Gutiérrez encuentra la manera de explotar su pegada de forma crucial en una acción aislada, el retador debería poder lograr la victoria si muestra la consistencia, el ritmo y la determinación que tuvo ante el citado invicto estadounidense.
Estos tres choques, más una pelea del peso superligero en la que el pegador Brandun Lee 25(22KO)-0 intentará convertirse en el segundo en noquear a Will Madera 17(10KO)-1(1)-3, serán emitidas en Estados Unidos el sábado por Showtime desde las 20:00 ET/17:00 PT, las 2:00 de la madrugada en hora peninsular española.

Compared to some recent Premier Boxing Champions pay-per-view events, whose undercards featured horrible mismatches, the card that this promotional group will offer this Saturday on Showtime looks a lot more interesting, something that is as strange as striking. Be that as it may, with two world championships, a development fight for a puncher and a «last chance» duel, the event from the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, United States, presents obvious incentives to watch it.
Figueroa will not fight Broner
Not having had enough wasting his natural talent with an attitude outside the ring that lacked respect for himself and others, former world champion Adrien Broner is recently doing everything he can to waste the good opportunities that he undeservedly still receives.
Thus, although it is suspected that he had not trained properly and was not even close to the super lightweight limit in which he should have fought this Saturday former world champion Omar «Panterita» Figueroa Jr. 28(19KO)-2(1)-1, Broner has used the current trending excuse among those who want a blank check to justify their bad actions, that is to say the supposed «mental problems», to get out of the bout on fight week. Considering the serious difficulties suffered by Figueroa, who hasn’t fought for 15 months and is coming from two straight losses, Lipinets is a suitable opponent, as he has been inactive for almost the same amount of time and in his last fight he was punished and knocked out by Jaron Ennis. In fact, although “Samurai” is seriously declining, he is a strong and brave fighter who maybe Figueroa will not be able to overcome in this moment of serious crisis that he is going through.
That said, while the fight could be entertaining and have good exchanges, it is in no way understandable or justifiable that the WBC has given the label of eliminator to a match between two fighters who are not even ranked in the top 40 on this organization.
A new super lightweight champion
Following Josh Taylor’s reign as undisputed super lightweight titleholder, a new era in the division begins with the first world championship for one of the belts vacated by the Briton. This title at stake will be the WBA, for which will fight the Dominican Alberto «La Avispa» Puello 20(10KO)-0 and the Uzbek Batyr Akhmedov 9(8KO)-1, the latter entering this match with controversy due to the arbitrary decision of the Association to place him in the world title bout despite being then ranked 6th.
In any case, although Ismael Barroso is the boxer who should have battled in the world championship (the Venezuelan will face a non-televised stay-busy bout), this does not mean that the Puello-Akhmedov fight will be bad. On the contrary, this could be a good clash of styles between Puello, who usually resorts to long-range boxing, and Akhmedov, who likes to shorten the distance and work with power shots at close and mid-close range.
At the moment, Akhmedov is placed as the favorite in the odds based on his punching power and his greater quality experience despite his much smaller number of fights. However, the margin between the two boxers is small, since the Uzbek suffered a defeat against Mario Barrios (with some similarities with Puello’s boxing) and the Dominican has an advantage in reach, good technical qualities and it is not really known certainty what his real level is before this crucial test for his career.
Roger Gutiérrez without Golden Boy’s support
There are many who feel that if Venezuelan Roger «The Kid» Gutiérrez 26(20KO)-3(2)-1 had not had the strong support of Golden Boy Promotions, he would not have achieved his position as WBA world super featherweight champion, especially taking into account the controversial scorecards of his first clash against René Alvarado. In any case, whether Gutiérrez deserved the victory or not, after the failed attempt to take his first mandatory defense to Venezuela, the titlist will finally face his next bout in an evening organized by the promoter of his rival, the Dominican Héctor Luis García 15(10KO)-0.
With the «home-field advantage» in his favor and coming from completely dominating a boxer considered a distinguished prospect like Chris Colbert, Garcia is the betting favorite. That is because, unless Gutiérrez finds a way to exploit his punch in a crucial an isolated action, the challenger should be able to obtain victory if he shows the consistency, pace and determination he had against the aforementioned undefeated American.
These three matches, plus a super lightweight fight in which the puncher Brandun Lee 25(22KO)-0 will try to become the second boxer to knockout Will Madera 17(10KO)-1(1)-3, will be broadcast in the United States on Saturday by Showtime from 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT, 1:00 a.m. in the United Kingdom.
