Filip Hrgović y Callum Smith se convirtieron en aspirantes obligatorios venciendo a Zhilei Zhang y Mathieu Bauderlique

Combatiendo en una eliminatoria en el semifondo del Usyk-Joshua II, esta era la gran oportunidad que el croata Filip “El Animal” Hrgović 15(12KO)-0 había estado esperando para intentar llevar su carrera a un nuevo nivel tras sufrir grandes problemas para encontrar boxeadores del top 15 que quisiesen enfrentarse él. Pues bien, en este extraordinario y durísimo duelo en el que ambos mostraron su valía, el bronce olímpico Hrgović venció al plata olímpico chino Zhilei “Big Bang” Zhang 24(19KO)-1-1 para convertirse en retador obligatorio al cinturón mundial IBF. Las cartulinas del triunfo unánime de Hrgović fueron de doble 115-112 y un 114-113.
En el primer asalto Hrgović padeció una errónea cuenta cuando Zhang le empujó hacia abajo con su brazo derecho en la nuca, pero esto sólo hizo que despertar al croata, que en el siguiente round impactó nítidas derechas rectas, buenos uno-dos y ganchos zurdos al rostro. De todos modos, Zhang no estaba ni mucho menos fuera de la pelea y en el tercer asalto llegó con peligrosas izquierdas rectas, mientras que el cuarto round dejó contundentes aciertos de ambos.
En definitiva, esta era una pelea muy interesante y disputada a falta de un punto de inflexión, al que Hrgović intentó acercarse con sus combinaciones de directo-hook y con sus ganchos al torso. Con todo, Zhang continuó llegando con fortísimas manos aisladas y en el sexto round dañó seriamente al croata con curvos enlazados. Este pareció el principio del fin, pero el valiente Hrgović tiró de candencia de golpes, de precisión y de excelente preparación para en adelante superar a un Zhang cansado.
Así, Hrgović fue ganando rounds y remontando, pero en el noveno episodio volvió a quedar dañado por los ganchos y uppercuts del fuerte Zhang. No obstante, en el décimo asalto fue Zhang quien se vio en apuros por las series de directo-gancho y de hooks abajo de Hrgović, que quedó tocado en el undécimo pero que respondió con gran coraje pese a estar muy desgastado y que ganó claramente el último round, en el que obligó al chino a agarrarse.
Como las cosas siempre avanzan lento en la división del peso pesado, más aún estando tres cinturones unificados, a Hrgović le queda mucho antes de alcanzar el mundial si no es que los cinturones quedan vacantes, algo que ahora mismo parece improbable. Con todo, ya se ha asegurado una cotizadísima pelea mundialista en el peso máximo y, aunque tiene que mejorar bastantes cosas, ha mostrado su dureza y su capacidad competitiva cuando las cosas se ponen muy difíciles.
Callum Smith retará a Artur Beterbiev
El exmonarca mundial británico Callum “Mundo” Smith 29(21KO)-1 era muy claro favorito para vencer al bronce olímpico francés Mathieu Bauderlique 21(12KO)-2(2) y vaya si cumplió las expectativas. Y es que Smith logró un espectacular triunfo en cuatro rounds en una eliminatoria WBC del peso semipesado que le dará acceso a un duelo mundialista ante el campeón Artur Beterbiev.
Con intensa presión y contundentes hooks arriba y abajo, Smith condujo a las cuerdas al francés y le castigó de forma muy amenazadora a pesar de que Bauderlique contestó con valentía e incluso lanzó contraofensivas. Estos primeros éxitos de “Mundo” fueron sucedidos por un knockdown padecido por Bauderlique en el cuarto asalto por un certero gancho zurdo a la contra. Posteriormente en ese mismo round, Smith hizo que su rival se tambalease repetidamente con demoledores golpes de poder y finalmente lo desarboló aparatosamente con un temible hook de mano adelantada.

Fighting in an eliminator in the co-feature of the event Usyk-Joshua II, this was the great opportunity that Croatian Filip “El Animal” Hrgović 14(12KO)-0 had been waiting for to try to take his career to the next level after suffering great difficulties to find top 15 boxers who wanted to fight him. Well, in this extraordinary and very tough duel in which both showed their worth, Olympic bronze medalist Hrgović defeated Chinese Olympic silver medalist Zhilei “Big Bang” Zhang 24(19KO)-1-1 to become the mandatory challenger for the IBF world belt. Hrgović’s unanimous decision victory had scorecards of double 115-112 and one 114-113.
In the first round Hrgović suffered an erroneous count when Zhang pushed him down with his right arm to the back of the head, but this only woke the Croat, who in the next round landed crisp straight rights, good one-twos and left hooks. Still, Zhang was by no means out of the fight and in the third round he connected dangerous straight left hands, while the fourth round had dangerous successes from both boxers.
This was being a very interesting and close fight in the absence of a turning point, which Hrgović tried to get closer to with his straight-hook combinations and hooks to the body. Still, Zhang continued to land very hard isolated hands and in the sixth round he seriously hurt the Croatian with his hooks. This seemed like the beginning of the end, but the brave Hrgović used his punch output, precision and excellent preparation to overcome a tired Zhang from then on.
Thus, Hrgović was winning rounds and coming back, but in the ninth round he was again damaged by the hooks and uppercuts of the strong Zhang. However, in the tenth round it was Zhang who was in trouble by the series of straight-hooks and hooks down by Hrgović, who was hurt in the eleventh but who answered with great courage (despite being very worn out) and clearly won the last round, in which he forced the Chinese to clinch.
As things always move slowly in the heavyweight division, even more so with three unified belts, Hrgović has a long way ahead before reaching the world championship unless the belts become vacant, something unlikely. All in all, he has already secured a coveted world title fight at heavyweight and, although he has a lot to improve, he has shown his toughness and competitive ability when things get really tough.
Callum Smith will challenge Artur Beterbiev
The British, former world champion, Callum “Mundo” Smith 29(21KO)-1 was a very clear favorite to beat French Olympic bronze medalist Mathieu Bauderlique 21(12KO)-2(2) and he absolutely lived up to expectations. Smith achieved a spectacular win in four rounds in a WBC light heavyweight eliminator that will give him access to a world title fight against champion Artur Beterbiev.
With intense pressure and forceful hooks up and down, Smith drove the Frenchman to the ropes and punished him very threateningly despite Bauderlique answered bravely and even threw counter-offensives. These first successes of “Mundo” were followed by a knockdown suffered by Bauderlique in the fourth round due to an accurate counter left hook. Later in the round, Smith repeatedly rocked his rival with crushing power shots and finally knocked him out spectacularly with an excellent lead hook.
