Sin las controvertidas cartulinas ante René Alvarado, el venezolano Roger “The Kid” Gutiérrez 26(20KO)-4(2)-1 no habría logrado coronarse campeón mundial del peso superpluma, pero el sábado la “suerte” se le terminó al titular y el dominicano Héctor Luis “El Androide” García 16(10KO)-0 le derrotó con mucha claridad para lograr su primer cinturón mundial. El triunfo de García fue por decisión unánime y justas puntuaciones de doble 117-111 y un 118-110.
La cuestión clave era sí García iba a tener ante Gutiérrez parte de las cualidades mostradas ante Chris Colbert, y efectivamente así fue, puesto que sólido, preciso y astuto el zurdo dominicano conectó buenas izquierdas rectas a la cabeza y al torso, oportunos ganchos de mano adelantada y evitó las manos rivales con un acertado uso de las piernas.
Gutiérrez se vio en una posición táctica muy complicada, ya que si trataba de esperar para encontrar un hueco recibía manos nítidas, y si atacaba, erraba sus manos y era contragolpeado. Por ello, con cinco asaltos transcurridos el combate estaba siendo firmemente controlado por “El Androide” y no parecía que fuese a cambiar.
Ciertamente, no lo hizo, y la pelea se consumió monótonamente dominada por García ante un Gutiérrez al que le faltó entonces, cuanto menos, la tenacidad necesaria para intentar quemar todos sus cartuchos en una carga agresiva. Al contrario, “The Kid” siguió expectante e inactivo durante demasiado tiempo, dejándose arrastrar a la derrota.
Finalmente, siendo ya su única posibilidad de triunfo el knockout, demasiado tarde Gutiérrez aceleró sus pasos y provocó intercambios en los que llegó con algunos buenos golpes de poder, pero no logró generar daños críticos y recibió certeros contragolpes de parte de su técnico y eficaz oponente.
Con convincentes triunfos consecutivos sobre Colbert y Gutiérrez y un cinturón mundial en su poder, el invicto García ha entrado por méritos propios en la élite de la división. No obstante, reinando en el peso superpluma el monarca unificado WBC-WBO Shakur Stevenson, García está lejísimos de poder ser considerado número 1 de la categoría y muchos pensarán que su tiempo como campeón se vería cortado bruscamente si se midiese al citado púgil estadounidense.
Lee cayó pero venció
Después de que en abril su racha de 15 victorias antes del límite terminase ante Zachary Ochoa, el prospecto del peso superligero Brandun Lee 26(22KO)-0 pretendía reanudar su cadena de knockouts ante Will Madera 17(10KO)-2(1)-3. Sin embargo, Lee no sólo tuvo que conformarse con una victoria por decisión unánime (triple 98-91), sino que además fue derribado aparatosamente en una ocasión.
Lee, que parecía ser de una división de peso superior a su rival, presionó confiado durante los primeros dos rounds, conectó explosivas combinaciones e incluso provocó un corte alrededor del ojo izquierdo de su rival con un uppercut. Con todo, en el tercer asalto un excelente cruzado diestro estalló contra su mentón y le tumbó terriblemente. Parecía que Lee no iba a poder levantarse, pero lo logró, al igual que también soportó los envites posteriores de Madera, quien no volvió a tener éxitos similares en el combate.
Al contrario, desde el quinto asalto Lee boxeó más, no fue tan agresivo, mantuvo las distancias, usó de forma frecuente y afilada el jab y sacó eventuales potentes ganchos a la cabeza para lograr ganar conservadoramente los rounds y neutralizar en gran parte tácticamente a Madera, que sólo consiguió llegar con curvos significativos de forma espaciada y poco determinante.

Without the controversial scorecards against René Alvarado, the Venezuelan Roger “The Kid” Gutiérrez 26(20KO)-4(2)-1 would not have been crowned super featherweight world champion, but on Saturday he ran out of “luck” and the Dominican Héctor Luis “El Androide” García 16(10KO)-0 defeated him very clearly to win his first world belt. Garcia’s victory was by unanimous decision and fair scores of double 117-111 and one 118-110.
The key question was whether Garcia would have against Gutierrez some of the qualities shown against Chris Colbert, and indeed he did, since, solid, precise and astute, the Dominican southpaw landed good straight lefts to the head and body, well-timed lead hooks and avoided the rival hands with an appropiate use of the legs.
Gutiérrez found himself in a very difficult tactical position, since if he tried to wait to find an opening he received clean hands and, if he attacked, he missed his hands and was counter-punched. Therefore, with five rounds consumed, the fight was being firmly controlled by «El Androide» and it did not seem that it was going to change.
Certainly, the fight passed monotonously dominated by Garcia over Gutierrez, who then lacked, to say the least, the necessary tenacity to try to achieve a turning point through an aggressive charge. On the contrary, «The Kid» remained expectant and inactive for too long, allowing García to drag him into defeat.
Finally, with his only chance of victory being the knockout, too late Gutiérrez accelerated his steps and provoked exchanges in which he connected some good power shots, but failed to generate critical damage and received accurate counter-punches from his technical and efficient opponent.
With convincing back-to-back wins over Colbert and Gutierrez, and a world belt in his possession, the undefeated Garcia has rightfully entered in the elite of the division. However, with the unified WBC-WBO Shakur Stevenson reigning at super featherweight, Garcia is very far from being considered number 1 in the weight class and many will think that his time as a champion would be cut short if he faces the aforementioned American boxer.
Lee was dropped
After having his 15 stoppage win streak snapped by Zachary Ochoa in April, super lightweight prospect Brandun Lee 26(22KO)-0 looked to resume his string of knockouts against Will Madera 17(10KO)-2(1)-3. However, Lee not only had to settle for a unanimous decision victory (triple 98-91), but he was also knocked down badly once.
Lee, who seemed a boxer from a higher weight division than his rival, pressed confidently through the first two rounds, landing explosive combinations and even causing a cut around his opponent’s left eye with an uppercut. Still, in the third round an excellent overhand right crashed into his chin and knocked him down terribly. It seemed that Lee was not going to be able to get up, but he managed to do it, and he also withstood the subsequent attacks of Madera, who did not had similar successes in the fight again.
