En muchas ocasiones un boxeador que sobre el papel no debería haber accedido a una oportunidad mundialista, sobre el ring encima tiene una actuación floja y carente de garra. Pero esto no es lo que sucedió con el uzbeko Batyr Akhmedov 9(8KO)-2, todo lo contrario. Dicho púgil, pese a entrar al campeonato de forma muy cuestionable (era 6º clasificado cuando se le nombró coaspirante), ofreció todo lo que tenía para, en una gran batalla, hacerse merecedor del triunfo ante el muy tenaz y resistente dominicano Alberto “La Avispa” Puello 21(10KO)-0. Con todo, aunque un juez dio un 115-113 para Akhmedov, los otros dos dieron tarjetas corruptas e injustificables de doble 111-117 para Puello, que con mucha controversia logró el título mundial.
Los planteamientos de estos zurdos boxeadores quedaron claros desde el inicio, siendo además los esperados, con Puello moviéndose y tratando de contragolpear las entradas de un Akhmedov que intentaba acortar los espacios y conectar golpes de poder. En este esquema fue Puello quien conectó las mejores manos en el primer cuarto a través de rápidos y certeros ganchos diestros arriba y abajo, uppercuts de izquierda, combinaciones de ambos puños, uno-dos, etc.
Sin embargo, desde el cuarto round Akhmedov empezó a trabajar con mucha dureza y frecuencia con sus ganchos abajo intentando desgastar y hacer más estático a su contrincante, que pese a los fuertes golpes recibidos en el cuarto y el quinto asalto replicó con gran coraje. La pelea se volvió muy emocionante, con excelentes intercambios y asaltos muy igualados que caían del lado de uno u otro por muy poco, así que, hasta que el rendimiento de uno de ellos no se hundiese, ambos iban a seguir batallando con descarnada intensidad.
Quien terminó lidiando peor con la batalla de desgaste fue “La Avispa”, que menoscabado intentó caminar desde el décimo round pero que fue presionado por el agresivo uzbeko. Así éste pareció anotarse a base de acometividad unos rounds finales decisivos para asegurarse el triunfo y, con ello, el cinturón mundial, si bien dos de los jueces ni siquiera se plantearon fingir imparcialidad.
Gracias a su capacidad para acortar los espacios, a su habilidad para encontrar huecos y a su enorme cadencia de golpeo y constancia, Akhmedov garantiza muchísimo trabajo para cualquier rival que no consiga dañarle, y en adelante, y mientras su encaje aguante, seguirá ofreciendo excelentes combates. En cuanto a Puello, aunque probablemente pueda retener su cinturón ante su próximo aspirante obligatorio Ismael Barroso, seguramente los miembros de la élite de la categoría le verán como un objetivo batible y contra el que deberán centrar sus miradas.

On many occasions a boxer who on paper should not have acceded to a world title opportunity, has a weak performance in the ring in which he lacks grit. But this is not what happened with the Uzbek Batyr Akhmedov 9(8KO)-2, quite the opposite. Despite entering the championship in a very questionable way (he was ranked 6th when he was named co-challenger), Akhmedov offered everything he had and deserved the victory in a great battle against the very tenacious and resistant Dominican Alberto «La Avispa» Puello 21(10KO)-0. However, although one judge had a score of 115-113 for Akhmedov, the other two gave corrupt and unjustifiable double scorecards of 111-117 for Puello, who with much controversy won the world title.
The approaches of these southpaw boxers were clear from the start, and were also as expected, with Puello moving and trying to counterpunch the attacks of Akhmedov, who seek to shorten the spaces and land power shots. In this situation, it was Puello who landed the best hands in the first quarter through quick and accurate up and down right hooks, left uppercuts, one-twos, etc.
Nevertheless, from the fourth round Akhmedov began to work very hard with frequent hooks to the body trying to wear down and make more static his opponent, who despite the hard blows received in the fourth and fifth rounds replied with great courage. The fight became very exciting, with excellent exchanges and very close rounds, so, until the pace of one of them did not sink, both were going to continue battling with great intensity.
The fighter who ended up dealing worse with the battle of attrition was «La Avispa», who, tired, walked the ring from the tenth round but was pressured by the aggressive Uzbek. Thus, in the final stretch it seemed that Akhmedov won some decisive rounds to ensure victory and, with it, the world belt, although two of the judges did not even consider feigning impartiality.
Thanks to his ability to shorten spaces, his capacity to find defensive breaches and his enormous punching rate and consistency, Akhmedov guarantees a lot of work for any rival who does not manage to hurt him, and in the future, and as long as his chin lasts, he will continue to offer excellent bouts. As for Puello, although he probably will be able to retain his belt against his next mandatory challenger Ismael Barroso, the members of the division’s elite will surely see him as a beatable target in which they should focus.
