En el primer combate de sus carreras por un título relevante, las británicas Kristine Shergold 7(1KO)-6-1 y Vicky Wilkinson 4(0KO)-0-1 habrían podido ganarse la aparición en una velada importante de haber logrado capturar la victoria. Sin embargo, el resultado de empate en el que terminó su cruce de la pasada noche les llevará o a una revancha o a buscar suerte en un camino alternativo. Aunque Wilkinson pareció superior y un juez le dio la victoria por excesivo 98-92, los otros dos dieron cuestionables cartulinas de doble 95-95.
En algunos momentos del primer tramo Shergold pareció estar en posición de desplegar un eficaz boxeo técnico, llegando bien con su jab entre reposicionamientos y frenando a su rival con algunos directos. Pero pronto Wilkinson se adaptó al boxeo de su contrincante y, en un choque que se producía a un ritmo bastante pausado y no demasiado espectacular, fue escogiendo arremetidas en las que impactó directos o ganchos. Además, cuando sus acciones ofensivas erraban el objetivo inicialmente y ambas quedaban situadas en la distancia corta, Wilkinson lo aprovechaba para llegar con manos curvas nítidas.
Así, y dando algunos pasos atrás para eludir jabs, la invicta logró una ventaja que se fue expandiendo hasta parecer que se había hecho con el triunfo, si bien en el último tramo de la contienda espació demasiado sus cargas y no se mostró tan afilada con los golpes significativos, por lo que Shergold logró utilizar esporádicos directos para recuperar terreno tanto tácticamente como en las puntuaciones.
Si en los asaltos más igualados se le diese siempre el beneficio de la duda a Shergold, quizás se podría llegar a un resultado de empate, pero juzgando los rounds de manera imparcial, dio la sensación de que Wilkinson hizo más para merecer la victoria, algo que quizás queda más claro aún en una perspectiva global por conectar los puños más nítidos. En cualquier caso, dado que ambas puede que no tengan mucho margen de maniobra en sus carreras por sus edades, este empate, más que darles experiencia y asegurarles una nueva oportunidad en una revancha, es todo un obstáculo para sus trayectorias que les quita lo que menos les sobra, o sea, tiempo.

In the first important title bout of their careers, the British boxers Kristine Shergold 7(1KO)-6-1 and Vicky Wilkinson 4(0KO)-0-1 could have earned an appearance on an important evening if they had managed to obtain a win. However, the result of draw in their last night’s match will lead them either to a rematch or to seek an alternative path. Although Wilkinson seemed superior and one judge scored the bout in her favor with an excessive 98-92, the other two judges gave questionable cards of double 95-95.
At some points of the first rounds Shergold seemed to be in position to display an effective technical boxing, landing well her jab between repositionings and stopping her rival’s advance with a few straight shots. But soon Wilkinson adapted to her opponent’s style and, in a clash that took place at a fairly slow pace, she chose sporadic charges through which she hit her rival with straight hands or hooks. Also, when her offensive actions initially missed the target and both fighters met in the close range, Wilkinson took advantage of it to connect good hooks.
Thus, and taking steps back to avoid jabs, the unbeaten achieved a lead that expanded until it seemed that she had won the fight. In any case, in the last stretch of the duel she spaced her attacks too much and was not as sharp with her significant punches, so Shergold was able to use her straight shots to recover some ground both tactically and in the scorecards.
If in the scoring for this fight Shergold always receives the benefit of the doubt in the more even rounds, perhaps a draw could be possible, but judging the rounds impartially, it seemed that Wilkinson did more to deserve the victory. That perhaps is even clearer in an overall perspective, since Wilkinson connected the more forceful hands. In any case, given that both may not have much room for maneuver in their careers due to their ages, this draw, rather than giving them experience and ensuring a new opportunity through a rematch, is an obstacle that takes away what they have less to spare, that is, time.
