El invicto Jack Bowen no fue el único favorito que se vio sorprendido en la velada australiana del jueves, ya que el peso superwélter Benjamin “The Hype Beast” Hussain 6(3KO)-2(2) se quedó cortísimo en una pretendida pelea de desarrollo ante un rival exigente pero con múltiples tropiezos como Lachlan “Bubba” Higgins 8(3KO)-5-2.
En el inicio parecieron perfilarse claramente dos cosas. Una de ellas era que Hussain tenía algo más de boxeo y que podía tener superioridad en técnica y juego de piernas, algo que mostró a través de jabs y desplazamientos. No obstante el otro elemento que se hizo evidente era que Higgins tenía una gran ventaja en contundencia que se plasmaba a través de sus tensos golpes de poder en la distancia corta y media-corta. Así, el encuentro se iba a decidir del lado de quien pudiese boxear en su distancia consistentemente.
En ese sentido, Hussain se mostró incapaz de mantenerse dinámico y alejado de su oponente, que rápidamente le llevó a las cuerdas. En esa situación táctica, en el segundo asalto Higgins conectó un brutal hook zurdo que estalló contra su oponente y le derribó sobre la lona. Hussain se levantó, pero el árbitro consideró que no estaba en condiciones para continuar.
Después de haber sido batido antes del límite también por Ben Mahoney, este tropiezo pone más interrogantes sobre Hussain, puesto que en dos de sus tres combates de cierta exigencia sucumbió ante los golpes de sus oponentes, lo que sugiere que si no logra imponer su habilidad no lidia demasiado bien con el castigo. Unbeaten Jack Bowen wasn’t the only favorite to suffer a shocking defeat on Thursday’s Australian event, as super welterweight Benjamin “The Hype Beast” Hussain 6(3KO)-2(2) fell short in what was supposed to be a development fight against a demanding opponent, but with multiple setbacks, like Lachlan «Bubba» Higgins 8(3KO)-5-2.
At first glance, two things stood out clearly. One of them was that Hussain had a better boxing and that he could have superiority in technique and footwork, something he showed through jabs and movements. However, the other element that became apparent was that Higgins had a huge advantage in forcefulness, which was visible through his power shots at close and mid-close range. Thus, the match was going to be won by the fighter who could box in his distance consistently.
In that sense, Hussain was unable to stay mobile and away from his opponent, who quickly took him to the ropes. With that tactical situation, in the second round Higgins landed a brutal left hook that dropped his opponent to the canvas. Hussain got up, but the referee felt that he was in no condition to continue.
After being beaten by stoppage also by Ben Mahoney, this defeat generates more questions about Hussain, since in two of his three biggest bouts he succumbed to the punches of his opponents, which suggests that, if he does not impose his ability, he doesn’t deal too well with punishment. For his part, Higgins scored the most important victory of his career to date and, if he now receives the right opportunities, at 23 years old, he would still have a good chance of straightening his career, stopping being a stepping stone and aspiring to important goals in his country’s scene.
