Perder sus cinturones en la báscula fue la única decepción que el estadounidense Shakur “Fearless” Stevenson 19(9KO)-0 se llevó en esta semana, ya que ante su público desgastó y neutralizó al oro olímpico brasileño Robson Conceição 17(8KO)-2 hasta llevarlo a una amplísima derrota por decisión unánime. Las puntuaciones fueron justas: doble 117-109 y un 118-108.
Como siempre la gran defensa del zurdo Stevenson jugó un papel clave desde el inicio, desviando, bloqueando o esquivando, aunque fuese por poco, muchas de las manos de Conceição tanto retrocediendo como avanzando. De todos modos, inicialmente en ataque el estadounidense no tuvo más que éxitos aislados sacando certeras izquierdas rectas, mientras que Conceição hacía lo que podía a través de su velocidad de manos intentando dar la réplica y tratando de mantener las acciones disputadas.
Pronto Stevenson se dio cuenta que estaba en posición de presionar y atacar de forma sostenida a un púgil con un mal lenguaje corporal y que pareció acusar bastante una certera izquierda directa, recurriendo entonces Conceição al clinch de forma precipitada. Así, Stevenson continuó avanzando y sacando astutos rectos y veloces combinaciones de curvos antes de que en el cuarto asalto el árbitro realizase una cuenta cuestionable contra el brasileño: tras recibir un recto zurdo al cuerpo Conceição se dobló a la vez que buscaba agarrarse y fue empujado hacia abajo.
En cualquier caso, el dominio del local era creciente, ya que conectaba manos precisas con ganchos arriba o abajo, cruzados, uppercuts o directos ante un Conceição que a menudo lanzaba sus golpes desesperado y como un novato, inclinando su torso hacia adelante en exceso a la vez que arrojaba sus brazos sin apuntar. De hecho, en un cierto momento llegó a dar la sensación de que, a pesar de que Stevenson no es para nada un pegador, el visitante podía terminar siendo llevado a la derrota antes del límite menos por la acumulación de golpes recibidos que por una pérdida de moral evidente.
Finalmente, el descuento de un punto a Stevenson en el noveno round por empujar a su rival y una cierta disminución en su agresividad en el último tercio redujeron algo la superioridad general del invicto, pero aunque no pudo terminar cerrando el combate con un KOT se hizo igualmente con una victoria clarísima.
Que Stevenson ya no pueda dar el peso superpluma es visto por muchos como algo enteramente positivo, ya que ahora se encaminará a un peso ligero en el que hay nombres como Devin Haney, Vasiliy Lomachenko, Gervonta Davis, Ryan García, etc. Es decir, el perder sus cinturones en la báscula sólo le ha acercado a enormes bolsas y a combates mayúsculos que podrían servirle para escalar peldaños en las listas libra por libra y tratar de crear un importantísimo legado. Y es que ante todos los nombres mencionados Stevenson tendría, como mínimo, opciones de victoria, y sólo con añadir un par de esos boxeadores a su casillero de triunfos tras reinar en dos divisiones lograría ser muy respetado boxísticamente y pondría las bases para entrar en el Salón de la Fama.

Losing his belts on the scale was the only disappointment that the American Shakur “Fearless” Stevenson 19(9KO)-0 had this week, since in front of his hometown fans he wore down and neutralized the Brazilian Olympic gold medalist Robson Conceição 17(8KO)-2 before achieving a wide unanimous decision victory. The scores were fair: double 117-109 and one 118-108.
As always Stevenson’s great defense played a key role from the start, blocking, parrying or dodging many of Conceição’s hands both going forward and backing up. In any case, initially on the attack the American had basically isolated successes landing accurate straight lefts, while Conceição did what he could with his hand speed trying to answer and to keep the rounds contested.
Soon Stevenson realized that he was in a position to offer sustained pressure and attacks against a fighter with bad body language and who was hurt by a precise straight left, then resorting Conceição to clinches hastily. Thus, Stevenson continued to advance and unleash cunning straight hands and fast hook combinations before the referee did a questionable count against the Brazilian in the fourth round: after being hit with a straight left to the body, Conceição sought to hold his opponent and was pushed downwards.

That Stevenson can no longer make super featherweight is seen by many as something entirely positive, as he will now be heading towards the lightweight division, where there are names like Devin Haney, Vasiliy Lomachenko, Gervonta Davis, Ryan Garcia, etc. That is to say, losing his belts on the scale has only brought him closer to huge purses and very big fights that could help him climb positions in the pound-for-pound lists and try to create a very important legacy. Against all the names above mentioned, Stevenson would have, at least, chances of victory, and just by adding a couple of those boxers to his winning record after reigning in two divisions, he would be highly respected in boxing and would lay the foundations to enter the Hall of Fame.
