Sin saber cómo estaba siendo puntuado por el juez-árbitro, no se puede estar seguro de si Martin McDonagh 11(1KO)-2(1) esquivó una bala a última hora o no ante Connor Marsden 6(2KO)-3(3). En cualquier caso, lo que sí está claro es que, tras haber tenido algunas dificultades pasada la mitad y perder un punto, McDonagh no pudo haber escogido un mejor momento para anotarse su primera victoria antes del límite que con este KOT en el último asalto, que le valió el primer título de su carrera profesional.

Encontrándose la guardia diestra (Marsden) y zurda (McDonagh) de ambos púgiles, sus diferentes alturas (con ventaja para el primero) y sus ganas de lograr salir del ring con el cinturón, en la pugna se produjeron repetidos clinches precedidos por algunos uno-dos o breves combinaciones de curvo y directo. Entre el desorden y los choques de cabezas, en el primer tramo McDonagh pareció anotar las manos más contundentes con zurdazos y cruzados de izquierda, logrando además reducir el efecto de su menor estatura encimándose sobre su espigado rival y buscando una pelea física con agarres, golpeos cuerpo a cuerpo y forcejeos.

Por su parte Marsden, aunque en ocasiones llegaba con algún buen jab o directo diestro, sus movimientos eran demasiado lentos y tardíos, de modo que durante la mayoría del tiempo no se pudo mantener en la distancia larga y cayó en el tipo de combate que le interesaba a su oponente. Además, cuando más tarde se decidió a pasar al ataque, erró manos ante un McDonagh que entonces se movió y escogió certeros contragolpes.

Aun así, en el séptimo asalto Marsden impactó un buen directo diestro que estremeció un tanto a su oponente, que fue advertido por reiteración en los agarres antes de perder un punto en el octavo round. A consecuencia de esto, McDonagh se desordenó más aún en su avance y recibió contragolpes, entre ellos varios uppercuts diestros, siendo sacudido por un hook en el noveno round. Con todo, en ese mismo asalto, y cuando la situación se había puesto complicada, McDonagh dañó a Marsden con un potente curvo zurdo, hostigándolo antes de un décimo round en el que dejó tocado a su rival con un gancho diestro y posteriormente lo derribó aparatosamente con un duro izquierdazo que concluyó la contienda.

En virtud de este triunfo, McDonagh se convirtió en aspirante obligatorio del cinturón de Inglaterra del peso ligero que posee el difícil Myron Mills, aunque éste no combate desde hace cerca de un año y medio y no está muy claro cuál será su siguiente paso. En cualquier caso, si bien las limitaciones técnicas del nuevo titular Southern Area le podrían pasar factura en la pelea por el cetro inglés y ante Marsden dependió demasiado de embarrar las acciones, McDonagh mostró garra sentenciando el combate cuando se había puesto más difícil y con ello dejó unos rounds finales muy entretenidos y una noche para recordar en su carrera.

Without knowing how the fight was being scored by the judge-referee, it is not clear if Martin McDonagh 11(1KO)-2(1) dodged a bullet in the last round of the bout against Connor Marsden 6(2KO)-3(3). In any case, what is clear is that, having had some difficulties after the half and having lost a point, McDonagh couldn’t have picked a better time to score his first stoppage victory than with this TKO in the last round, which earned him the first title of his professional career.

Clashing the orthodox stance of Marsden and the southpaw stance of McDonagh, their different heights (with an advantage for the former) and their desire to get out of the ring with the belt, in the fight there were repeated clinches preceded by some one-twos or brief combinations of hook and straight hand. Between the lack of order and the headbutts, in the first stretch McDonagh seemed to score the most forceful hands with straight lefts and left hooks, and he also managed to reduce the effect of his shorter stature by getting very close to his tall rival and looking for a physical fight with holds and punches at close range.

For his part, Marsden, although on some occasions landed a good jab or right hand, was too slow and reacted too late, so that for most of the time he could not box from the long distance and found himself into the type of fight favorable to his opponent. Also, when he later decided to go on the attack, he missed hands against McDonagh, who then moved and chose accurate counterpunches.

Still, in the seventh round Marsden landed a nice straight right hand that shook his opponent, who was warned for his repeated clinches before losing a point in the eighth round. As a result, McDonagh got even more messy advancing, received counterpunches (including several right uppercuts) and was rocked by a hook in the ninth round. However, in that same round, and when the situation had gotten difficult, McDonagh hurt Marsden with a powerful left hook, attacking him hard before a tenth round in which he put his opponent in trouble with a right hook and later knocked him down spectacularly with a hard straight left that ended the match.

By virtue of this victory, McDonagh has become mandatory challenger for the English lightweight belt held by Myron Mills, although the champion has not fought for about a year and a half and it is not very clear what his next step will be. In any case, although the technical limitations of the new Southern Area titleholder could have decisive consequences in the fight for the English title and against Marsden he depended too much on entangling the actions, McDonagh showed grit by closing the fight when it had gotten more tricky, and with it he offered some entertaining final rounds in a night to remember in his career.
