El fogueadísimo Ben Fields 10(0KO)-12-3 es uno de esos boxeadores británicos con malos números en sus récords pero que son competentes y capaces de derrotar a los rivales que se descuiden. De hecho, la pasada noche Fields pareció hacer suficiente para salir de su combate habiendo destronado a Jamie Stewart 3(0KO)-2-2 como campeón regional británico Midlands Area del peso wélter. Con todo, el juez-árbitro consideró el encuentro un empate 95-95 que permitió al local Stewart conservar su título ante su público.
El plan de Fields estaba claro: acortar los espacios, empujar a su rival hacia las cuerdas y utilizar su gran fortaleza para imponerse en una pelea física en la que hacer valer sus golpes curvos. Por su parte, Stewart trataba de utilizar su superior técnica para intentar golpear desde la distancia larga con sus directos y abiertos hooks, pero aunque conectaba algunas manos claras en los intervalos con espacios, terminaba encerrado en las cuerdas y alcanzado por los golpes de poder de Fields.
Si Stewart hubiese tenido el juego de piernas para evitar el ensogado habría podido haberse hecho muy correoso con sus rápidos golpes. Con todo, como no logró hacerse espacios con pasos laterales, tuvo que esperar hasta que el musculoso Fields empezase a cansarse a partir de la mitad para tener la distancia necesaria para conectar más manos que su contrincante a través de fluidas combinaciones y así acortar notablemente la diferencia.
La pelea había dado un cambio, ya que, aunque Fields todavía tenía la fuerza para conducir hacia las cuerdas a su contrincante y apoyarse en él, no tenía las energías para ofrecer una adecuada cadencia de golpeo, mientras que Stewart seguía sin poder evitar por mucho ser encerrado pero llegaba con precisos uppercuts y hooks abajo. Así, incluso dio la sensación de que “King” podía llegar a remontar el combate, pero en los asaltos finales Fields quemó sus últimos cartuchos con agresivos ataques que abrumaron un tanto a Stewart y que parecieron certificar su triunfo.
Ciertamente, la pelea estuvo igualada y el empate no fue tan ilógico como resultó el injusto empate que Stewart logró ante un Florian Marku que le derrotó ampliamente en una velada de Matchoom/DAZN. Aun así, Fields pareció merecer más de lo que se le dio, especialmente teniendo en cuenta otros veredictos anteriores y cuáles habían sido sus resultados recientes (cuatro derrotas seguidas), y sería justo darle cuanto menos una revancha.

The hardened Ben Fields 10(0KO)-12-3 is one of those British boxers with bad numbers on their records but who are competent and capable of defeating opponents who are careless. In fact, last night Fields seemed to do enough to get out of his the ring having dethroned Jamie Stewart 3(0KO)-2-2 as Midlands Area welterweight champion. However, the judge-referee considered the match a draw (95-95) that allowed the local Stewart to keep his title in front of his hometown fans.
Fields’ plan was clear: shorten the distance, put his rival in the ropes and use his great strength to prevail in a physical fight through his hooks. For his part, Stewart tried to use his superior technique to land shots from long distance with his straight rights and hooks, but although he connected some clear hands in the intervals with spaces, he ended up cornered and hit by the power punches from Fields.
If Stewart had had the footwork to avoid the ropes, he could have been very tricky with his quick shots. However, since he failed to create space with sidesteps, he had to wait until the muscular Fields began to tire around the middle of the fight to have the distance to land more punches than his opponent through combinations and thus noticeably shorten the difference in the scorecard.
The fight had taken a turn, since, although Fields still had the strength to drive his opponent to the ropes and lean on him, he did not have the stamina to offer an adequate punching rate, while Stewart was still unable to avoid for much being cornered but he connected precise uppercuts and hooks down. Thus, it even looked like “King” could end up winning the bout, but in the final rounds Fields spent the energies he had left and with aggressive attacks, that somewhat overwhelmed Stewart, seemed to deserve the victory.
Certainly, the fight was close and the draw was not as illogical as it was the unfair draw that Stewart achieved against Florian Marku, who dominated the clash in a Matchoom/DAZN card. Still, Fields seemed to deserve more than he was given, especially considering other previous verdicts and what his recent results had been (four straight losses), and it would be fair to order a rematch.
