Claressa Shields se proclamó campeona indiscutida del peso medio venciendo a Savannah Marshall

Que la estadounidense Claressa Shields 13(2KO)-0 poseía calidad técnica era algo que todo el mundo conocía, pero ante la británica Savannah “The Silent Assassin” Marshall 12(10KO)-1 demostró hasta qué punto posee tenacidad, fortaleza y garra para batallar en corta ante una temible pegadora. Así, Shields logró una merecida victoria por decisión unánime (y cartulinas de 96-94 y doble 97-93) con la que puso de manifiesto que es la mejor púgil libra por libra de la actualidad en el boxeo femenino.
La pelea empezó emocionante, con Shields renunciando en buena medida a su estilo dinámico y defensivo para pararse y conectar explosivas combinaciones de hooks ante una Marshall que tuvo una inadecuada gestión defensiva. La local intentó conectar sus manos, pero la velocidad y la ejecución de golpeo de Shields decantaron las acciones de su lado en la distancia corta, en la que le benefició su desventaja en alcance.
Pese a los hooks recibidos en el cuerpo a cuerpo y los directos encajados en la distancia larga, Marshall siguió avanzando e intentando conectar sus golpes de poder, llegando con algunas series que fueron menos llamativas que las de su adversaria. Asimismo, sus buenas manos aisladas fueron contestadas por más numerosos puños de una Shields con gran capacidad de reacción bajo fuego.
Las cosas estaban realmente complicadas para la británica, que necesitaba conectar una mano decisiva, algo que buscó en el quinto asalto agresivamente con ganchos zurdos y directos diestros. En el sexto episodio Marshall conectó un potente cruzado zurdo que pareció dañar a Shields, pero ésta mostró su garra contestando con furia y llegando con buenos directos diestros.
A Marshall no le quedaba otra que seguir avanzando e intentándolo, pero se encimó demasiado, erró muchos golpes por la buena defensa de Shields y los que conectó fueron resistidos generalmente bien por su adversaria. Por ello, y teniendo energías Shields todavía para sacar contraofensivas intensas, los resultados positivos de Marshall en los asaltos finales no le bastaron a esta última para evitar la derrota.
Una revancha, más que algo deseable, quizás sea la única pelea interesante para ambas en el peso medio, categoría despobladísima (sólo 21 boxeadoras en activo) y en la que ellas dos son las únicas púgiles de élite. Por lo demás, si por algún motivo u otro Shields y Marshall no volviesen a enfrentarse, a la estadounidense no le quedará otra que intentar bajar más divisiones y buscar retos en pesos con más boxeadoras de nivel que en la que actualmente milita.

That the American Claressa Shields 13(2KO)-0 possesses great technical level was something that everyone knew, but against the British Savannah «The Silent Assassin» Marshall 12(10KO)-1 she also showed to what extent she has tenacity, strength and grit to battle at close range against a hard puncher. Thus, Shields achieved a deserved victory by unanimous decision and scorecards of 96-94 and double 97-93 with which she demonstrated that she is the best current pound-for-pound fighter in women’s boxing.
The bout began exciting from the start, with Shields renouncing many times to her mobile and defensive style to trade punches, landing explosive hook combinations against Marshall, who had a poor management of the defense. The local attempted to connect her hands, but Shields’ speed and punching technique made her superior at close range, distance in which she benefited from having less reach.
Despite the hooks received in the exchanges and the straight hands that hit her from long distance, Marshall continued to advance and tried to land her power shots, hitting her opponent with some combinations that were less eye-catching than those of the American. Also, her good isolated hands were answered by more numerous punches from Shields, who had a great capacity to react under fire.
Things were really hard for the Brit and she needed to connect a decisive hand, something she tried to achieve in the fifth round aggressively attacking with left hooks and straight right hands. In the sixth round Marshall landed a powerful left hook that seemed to hurt Shields, but she showed her grit by answering furiously and connecting good straight rights.
Marshall had no choice but to keep pressuring, but she got too close, she missed a lot of shots due to Shields’ good defense and the ones she landed were generally well resisted by her opponent. For this reason, and with Shields still having energy to throw some intense counteroffensives, Marshall’s positive results in the final rounds were not enough for her to avoid defeat.
A rematch, more than something desirable, may be the only interesting fight for both at middleweight, division with very few boxers (only 21) and in which the two of them are the only elite fighters. For the rest, if for some reason or another Shields and Marshall do not battle again, the American will have no choice but to try to move down and seek challenges in weight classes with more boxers with high level than the one in which she is currently fighting.
