Aparentemente el estadounidense Jeremy Cuevas 14(10KO)-2(1) no dio el peso intentando tener un margen para batallar en corta contra el pegador mexicano Ángel “Tashiro” Fierro 20(16KO)-1-2. Sin embargo, Cuevas debería haber intentado crear una pelea táctica, de distancia larga y con ritmo reducido para aprovechar su destreza y no echar más leña al fuego como hizo, algo que supuso que acabase perdiendo por KOT en el séptimo round.
Cuando al inicio Fierro intentó boxear con espacios y cediendo la iniciativa, esto se tradujo de forma previsible en ciertas dificultades tácticas, ya que no podía lidiar satisfactoriamente con la técnica y la velocidad de Cuevas. En cambio, cuando, como el segundo round, avanzó y guerreó en corta, sus series de golpes de poder le dieron evidentes resultados ante un contrincante que no podía equiparar su contundencia ni su capacidad para combatir en corta.
En ocasiones, Cuevas, mostrando tenacidad y determinación, le arrebató la iniciativa a su rival y le atacó con voluntariosas series, pero pronto Fierro pasó a replicarle con andanadas de curvos que solían ser más eficaces. En este sentido vale la pena destacar que Cuevas varias veces usó una de las peores defensas estáticas que se han visto en los últimos años entre los púgiles con aspiraciones del peso ligero. Y es que, por ejemplo, en el quinto asalto se quedó parado e intentó esquivar, desviar y bloquear durante bastante tiempo seguido y recibió un sinfín de golpes de Fierro.
Es verdad que, por lo tanto, el encaje del visitante fue bastante bueno y que no le faltó bravura pese a los problemas. Pero Cuevas, que sólo una vez había peleado más allá del sexto round, en ese mismo episodio fue dañado por un directo y por un potente gancho zurdo, mientras que en el siguiente asalto fue tambaleado por un gran número de golpes de poder hasta que el árbitro tuvo que parar el combate.
Fierro es un boxeador fuerte, combativo y que se presta a ofrecer peleas entretenidas y con espectacularidad. Además, si alguien guerrea con él en corta, su fortaleza, pegada y tesón pueden llevar a su oponente a aguas muy profundas. Con todo, este triunfo ante un púgil sin experiencia en peleas largas y duras y que cometió un grave error estratégico no nos debe hacer perder de vista ni las brechas tácticas de Fierro ni los problemas que padeció ante Juan Carlos Burgos.
Y es que “Tashiro” no está combatiendo en la escena nacional sino que es 4º WBO y podría llegar a disputar una eliminatoria ante el plata olímpico ucraniano Denys Berinchyk, quien de ejecutar el plan adecuado podría aprovechar mucho los puntos débiles de Fierro.

Apparently, the American Jeremy Cuevas 14(10KO)-2(1) did not make weight trying to have an advantage to battle at short range against the Mexican puncher Ángel «Tashiro» Fierro 20(16KO)-1-2. However, Cuevas should have tried to create a tactical, slow paced fight from long distance to exploit his ability and not add fuel to the fire as he did, something that led him to lose by TKO in the seventh round.
When Fierro initially tried to box with space and giving up the initiative, this predictably created some tactical difficulties for himself, as he was unable to deal satisfactorily with Cuevas’ technique and speed. On the other hand, when, like in the second round, he advanced and fought at close range, his combinations of power punches gave him obvious results against an opponent who could not match his forcefulness or his capacity to brawl in intense wars.
On occasions, Cuevas, showing tenacity and determination, took the initiative and attacked with incisive combinations, but soon Fierro replied with flurries of hooks that used to be more effective. In this sense, it is worth noting that Cuevas several times used one of the worst static defenses that have been seen in recent years among lightweights with aspirations. For example, in the fifth round he stopped his feet and tried to dodge, parry and block for a long time and he received uncountable blows from Fierro.
It is true that, therefore, the visitor showed a good chin and that he did not lack bravery despite the problems. But Cuevas, who had only once fought beyond the sixth round, in that same episode was hurt by a right hand and a powerful left hook, while in the next round he was staggered by a large number of power shots until the referee had to stop the fight.
Fierro is a strong, aggressive boxer who lends himself to offering entertaining and spectacular fights. In addition, if someone battles with him at close range his strength, punch and tenacity can led his opponent into very deep waters. All in all, this victory against a fighter with no experience in long and tough fights and who made a serious strategic mistake should not make us lose sight of Fierro’s tactical flaws or the problems he suffered against Juan Carlos Burgos.
It is necessary to remember that «Tashiro» is not fighting on the national Mexican scene but he is 4th WBO and could face an eliminator against the Ukrainian Olympic silver medalist Denys Berinchyk, who, if he executes the right plan, could greatly take advantage of Fierro’s weak points.
