Una forma de descubrir qué boxeadores tienen una gran proyección es ver cuántos posibles rivales han renunciado públicamente a enfrentarse a ellos y cuántos púgiles de élite incluso evitan pronunciar sus nombres. En este sentido, en la división del peso supermedio, entre otros, destaca el cubano David Morrell Jr. 7(6KO)-0, boxeador de gran carrera amateur que está impresionando con su rendimiento profesional, que le ha valido para barrer a oposición mucho más experimentada que él.
Así, cuando al británico John «The Gorilla» Ryder y a su promotor Matchroom Boxing se les ordenó que encarasen una pugna contra Morrell, Eddie Hearn buscó todas las maneras posibles para ganar tiempo y aplazar el requerimiento. Todo ello a pesar de que Morrell posee uno de los títulos regulares WBA que todavía no ha desaparecido y Ryder ganó una eliminatoria de la Asociación. Finalmente, como se pudo intuir inicialmente, Hearn y Ryder acabaron renunciando a este choque, así que «The Gorilla» fue merecidamente castigado siendo eliminado del ranking WBA.
Por ello, a Morrell, que no ha dudado en reclamar combates contra todos los pesos supermedios destacados sin recibir respuesta de estos, no le ha quedado otra que medirse a su siguiente oponente obligatorio, el invicto kazajo, también ganador de una eliminatoria, Aidos Yerbossynuly 16(11KO). Contra dicho boxeador se verá las caras en The Armory, recinto situado en la ciudad en la que actualmente reside Morrell, o sea Minneapolis, Estados Unidos.
Aunque no es conocido por el gran público, Yerbossynuly no es para nada un mal boxeador, sino que es un púgil con cualidades técnicas, fuerte y motivado. Además, llega de batir por KOT en el décimo asalto a un Lennox Allen que es el único boxeador al que Morrell no ha podido noquear como profesional. Sin embargo, el cubano realmente tuvo menos dificultades en su duelo ante Allen, al cual se midió en su tercera pelea profesional (Yerbossynuly peleó contra ese rival tras 15 victorias).
Dicho esto, y aunque el choque no está mal emparejado, Morrell debe ser considerado claro favorito para vencer la pugna, puesto que el zurdo, además de ser más rápido, explosivo, contundente y hábil, posee una gran ventaja en alcance (17 cm/7”) sobre Yerbossynuly. Así, y habiendo mostrado muchas brechas el kazajo peleando contra algunos zurdos, parece que Morrell tiene demasiadas ventajas a su favor como para no terminar logrando otra convincente victoria pese a los esfuerzos que realizará su oponente.
Respaldo principal del evento
En el semifondo se iban a enfrentar en un inicio el dominicano, excampeón mundial unificado del peso superwélter, Jeison Rosario 23(17KO)-3(3)-1 y el prospecto cubano Yoelvis Gómez, pero una lesión del segundo llevó a que entrase como remplazo tardío el estadounidense Brian “La Bala” Mendoza 20(14KO)-2. Este será el primer combate que disputa Rosario en Estados Unidos desde sus derrotas consecutivas por knockout ante Jermell Charlo y Erickson Lubin, de modo que la pelea debería servirle para intentar recuperar moral y tener rounds de trabajo útiles.
Y es que, aunque Mendoza no está al nivel de Charlo o Lubin, algo que quedó claro con su triunfo controvertido ante Thomas LaManna, es resistente, fuerte, tiene un nivel medio-alto y en su mayor combate aguantó diez asaltos ante la contundente y joven promesa Jesús “Mono” Ramos. Así que para ser un sustituto con poco tiempo de antelación que se mide a un Rosario que ha sido acusado de “rendirse” ante las primeras dificultades en sus duelos trascendentales, parece un oponente cuanto menos aceptable.
Por otro lado, la emisión de Showtime se iniciará con un combate del peso medio polaco-ucraniano Fiodor Czerkaszyn 20(13KO)-0 que, tras su debut en Estados Unidos en el respaldo no televisado del Figueroa-Lipinets en agosto, ahora da un salto adelante y encara su primer combate bajo los grandes focos ante el jamaicano Nathaniel Gallimore 22(17KO)-5(1)-1.
Gallimore ha sufrido sus derrotas recientes ante rivales como los campeones mundiales Julian Williams y Patrick Teixeira y los aspirantes Erickson Lubin y Sebastián Fundora, por lo que tiene mucha experiencia de calidad. Además, en su última pelea se anotó un importante triunfo contra pronóstico derrotando a un invicto con gran carrera amateur como Leon Lawson III. No obstante, Gallimore hace casi un año y medio que no combate y hace cinco años que no logra una victoria antes del límite, por lo que el 13º WBC y 15º IBF Czerkaszyn, que está teniendo un rendimiento realmente sólido y que ha logrado buenas victorias ante duros oponentes, será favorito para continuar extendiendo su racha y acercándose a una gran pugna.

One way to find out which fighters have great projection is to see how many potential opponents openly renounce to facing them and how many elite boxers even avoid saying their names. In this sense, in the super middleweight division the Cuban David Morrell Jr. 7(6KO)-0 stands out. This is a boxer with a great amateur career and who is impressing with his professional performance, which has allowed him to overwhelm much more experienced opposition than him.
Thus, when British John “The Gorilla” Ryder and Matchroom Boxing received the order to face a fight against Morrell, Eddie Hearn looked for all possible ways to buy time and postpone the bout. All this despite the fact that Morrell still has one of the Association’s regular titles that has not yet disappeared and Ryder won a WBA eliminator. Finally, as could be intuited since the beginning, Hearn and Ryder ended up refusing to face Morrell, so “The Gorilla” was deservedly punished by being eliminated from the WBA ranking.
For this reason, Morrell, who has not hesitated to ask for fights against all the prominent super middleweights without receiving a response from them, has had no choice but to face his next mandatory opponent, the undefeated Kazakh, winner of an eliminator, Aidos Yerbossynuly 16(11KO). He will battle said boxer at The Armory, a venue located in the city where Morrell resides, Minneapolis, United States.
Although he is not known by most of the fans, Yerbossynuly is not a bad boxer at all, since he is a technically sound, strong and motivated fighter. In addition, he comes from beating Lennox Allen by TKO in the tenth round, the only boxer that Morrell has not been able to knock out as a professional. However, the Cuban actually had fewer difficulties in his match against Allen, whom he faced in his third professional fight (Yerbossynuly fought him after 15 bouts).
That said, and although the clash is not a complete mismatch, Morrell should be considered the clear favorite to win the duel, since the Cuban southpaw, in addition to being faster, more explosive, forceful and skillful, has a great advantage in reach (17 cm/ 7”) over Yerbossynuly. So, with the Kazakh having also shown plenty of flaws fighting against some southpaws, it seems that Morrell has many advantages and that he will end up scoring another convincing win despite his opponent’s efforts.
Main support of the event
The Dominican, former unified super welterweight champion, Jeison Rosario 23(17KO)-3(3)-1 and Cuban prospect Yoelvis Gómez were supposed to face each other in the co-feature, but an injury to the latter forced the organization to select as late replacement American Brian “La Bala” Mendoza 20(14KO)-2. This will be Rosario’s first fight in the United States since back-to-back knockout losses to Jermell Charlo and Erickson Lubin, so the fight should help him to rebuild his morale and have useful rounds of work.
Although Mendoza is not at the level of Charlo or Lubin, something that became clear with his controversial victory over Thomas LaManna, he is resistant, strong and in his biggest fight he reached the final bell in a ten-rounder against the forceful and young prospect Jesús “Mono” Ramos. So being a short notice substitute facing a boxer who has been accused of «quitting» at the first serious difficulties in his biggest opportunities, he seems like an acceptable opponent to say the least.
On the other hand, the Showtime broadcast will kick off with a new bout for Polish-Ukrainian middleweight Fiodor Czerkaszyn 20(13KO)-0 who, after making his US debut in the non-televised undercard of the Figueroa-Lipinets bill in August, now will give another step forward facing his first main card fight in Amercia against Jamaican Nathaniel Gallimore 22(17KO)-5(1)-1.
Gallimore has suffered his recent defeats against the likes of world champions Julian Williams and Patrick Teixeira and title challengers Erickson Lubin and Sebastian Fundora, so he has plenty of quality experience. In addition, in his last bout he scored an important upset victory defeating an unbeaten boxer with a great amateur career as Leon Lawson III. However, Gallimore hasn’t fought in almost a year and a half and hasn’t achieved a stoppage victory in five years, so the 13th WBC and 15th IBF Czerkaszyn, who is putting on really solid performances and has scored good victories against tough opponents, will be the favorite to prevail, continue extending his streak and keep getting closer to a big fight.
