José Pedraza baja por enfermedad, Teófimo López se medirá a Sandor Martín

Todo estaba dispuesto de manera firme para los siguientes pasos del estadounidense Teófimo López, y por ellos no pasaba una pelea contra el español Sandor Martín que el WBC había ordenado como eliminatoria del peso superligero. Y es que, después de medirse a José Pedraza el día 10 de diciembre en el Madison Square Garden de Nueva York, Estados Unidos, se esperaba que López combatiese por el cinturón mundial WBO que su compañero de escuadra Josh Taylor dejaría vacante a principios del próximo año. Sin embargo, un hecho inesperado ha llevado a un cambio en los planes.
Dado que el puertorriqueño Pedraza ha sido baja por enfermedad, Top Rank ha tenido que buscar un púgil que aceptase combatir con López con unas tres semanas de margen, recurriendo a Martín, quien ha aceptado ya acceder al enfrentamiento como remplazo. Así, el López-Martín será el encuentro estelar de una velada de Top Rank que será emitida por ESPN en Estados Unidos.
Teniendo en cuenta que, además de ser una eliminatoria WBC, la pugna será entre el número 1 WBO (López) y el 6º WBO Martín, este enfrentamiento le servirá al ganador para quedar en una posición ideal para alcanzar un mundial en 2023. Es decir, no sólo tendrá asegurado oficialmente que podrá combatir en un campeonato sino que podrá decidir cuál de las dos rutas prefiere seguir, si la WBC o la WBO, para regular los riesgos y los beneficios así como los tiempos para acceder a la pugna titular.
Hay que recordar que la semana que viene José Zepeda y Regis Prograis combatirán por el vacante cinturón WBC, siendo su siguiente retador obligatorio José Carlos Ramírez (según las normas del Consejo quien captura un cinto mundial vacante tiene que realizar dos defensas obligatorias). Por otro lado, el monarca WBO es Josh Taylor, que se supone que se medirá en una revancha a Jack Catterall hacia el mes de febrero, aunque la pugna todavía no ha sido anunciada oficialmente.

The next steps of the American Teófimo López’s career were firmly set, and a fight against the Spaniard Sandor Martín that the WBC had ordered as a super lightweight eliminator was not part of the plan. After facing José Pedraza on December 10 at Madison Square Garden in New York, United States, López was expected to battle for the WBO world belt that his squadmate Josh Taylor will vacate at the beginning of the next year. However, an unexpected event has led to a change in the plans.
As the Puerto Rican Pedraza has withdrawn from the fight due to an illness, Top Rank has had to find a replacement who would agree to face Lopez with about three weeks before fight night, choosing Martín, who has already signed the contract for this matchup. Thus, the López-Martín will be the main bout of a Top Rank evening that will be broadcast by ESPN in the United States.
Taking into account that, in addition to being a WBC eliminator, the fight will be between the number 1 WBO (López) and the 6th WBO Martín, this bout will serve the winner to be in an ideal position to reach a world championship in 2023. In other words, not only will he be officially guaranteed a championship fight, but he will be able to decide which of the two routes he prefers to follow, whether the WBC or the WBO, to regulate the risks and benefits as well as the times to access the title fight.
It must be remembered that next Saturday José Zepeda and Regis Prograis will fight for the vacant WBC belt, their next mandatory challenger being José Carlos Ramírez (according to WBC rules, whoever conquers a vacant world belt has to make two mandatory defenses).
