Ha tardado en anunciarse oficialmente más de lo esperado, pero al fin Premier Boxing Champions ha confirmado que el día 28 de enero, en el Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino de Las Vegas, Estados Unidos, el campeón indiscutido del peso superwélter Jermell Charlo y el invicto retador obligatorio Tim Tszyu se verán las caras en un muy interesante enfrentamiento televisado en Estados Unidos por Showtime.
En un momento la pugna pareció hasta cierto punto amenazada por una protesta formal por parte del aspirante obligatorio IBF Bakhram Murtazaliev, que reclamaba un acceso al título mundial que legalmente le pertenecía a él primero según el sistema de rotación de defensas mandatorias. Además, el equipo de Charlo en su día le habría prometido ya una pugna titular. En cualquier caso, parece que todo ello se resolvió, como ha sucedido tantas otras veces, pagándole un step-aside a Murtazaliev.
Así, finalmente se producirá un Charlo-Tszyu que resulta mucho más atrayente para el público, que ofrecerá mucho mejores números a los organizadores y que además será un interesante test para conocer realmente cuál es el nivel real que el hijo de Kosta Tszyu puede mostrar ante la élite.
En el anuncio oficial, Jermell Charlo afirmó:
“Estoy emocionado por volver al ring para defender mi corona indiscutida. Estoy agradecido por todo lo que he conseguido, pero la batalla no se ha acabado. Tim Tszyu es un joven, hambriento y agresivo peleador pero yo soy un grande libra por libra. Reino como el campeón indiscutido y si alguien quiere una oportunidad a la corona tiene que vérselas conmigo. No me voy a ninguna parte. Quiero que todos mis fans sintonicen porque, una vez más, es hora de Lions Only y planeo iluminar Las Vegas y mostrarle al mundo que soy el boxeador más peligroso en el deporte, independientemente de la división”.
Por su parte, Tszyu dijo:
“Jermell es un gran e inteligente boxeador y lo ha sido durante muchos años. Convertirse en indiscutido es un increíble logro. Pero su momento se ha acabado ahora, porque estoy a punto de conmocionar al mundo y tomar el control. Va a ser un gran combate ya que ninguno de los dos sabe cómo dar un paso atrás y vamos a lanzarnos golpes desde el principio con muy malas intenciones. Me estoy preparando para una guerra sangrienta, dado que sé que él también. Ya llevo meses entrenando y estoy en el mejor estado de forma de mi carrera. Las bases se sentaron en Australia y Tailandia, pero ahora estoy aquí en Estados Unidos para ir al siguiente nivel, que es exactamente lo que se necesita cuando estás peleando por el campeonato del mundo indiscutido”.

It has taken longer than expected to be officially announced, but at last Premier Boxing Champions has confirmed that on January 28, at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, United States, the undisputed super welterweight champion Jermell Charlo and his undefeated mandatory challenger Tim Tszyu will face each other in a very interesting bout televised in the United States by Showtime.
At one point the fight seemed threatened to some extent by a formal protest made by IBF mandatory challenger Bakhram Murtazaliev, who demanded access to a world title match that legally was due to him first according to the mandatory defense rotation system. In addition, Charlo’s team had already promised him a title bout. In any case, it seems that all this was resolved, as has happened so many other times, by paying Murtazaliev a step-aside.

For his part, Tszyu said:
“Jermell is a great, smart fighter and has been for many years – becoming undisputed is an incredible achievement. But his time is over now, because I’m about to shock the world and take over. It’s going to be a great fight as neither of us know how to take a backward step and are going to be swinging from the start with very bad intentions. I’m preparing for a bloody war as I know he is too. I’ve already been grinding for months and I’m in the best shape of my career. The groundwork was laid in Australia and Thailand but I’m here now in the U.S. to take it to the next level, which is exactly what’s needed when you’re fighting for the undisputed championship of the world.”
