En un duelo entre imprecisión e inactividad, Teófimo López derrotó a Sandor Martín en mal combate

Mezclándose la tremenda falta de precisión del estadounidense Teófimo López 18(13KO)-1 y la falta de frecuencia de golpes del español Sandor Martín 40(13KO)-3, el choque eliminatorio entre ambos fue simplemente para olvidar, siendo lo único que puso de manifiesto que ninguno de los dos merece disputar un mundial.
En cualquier caso, aunque la horrenda actitud de López, que compensa con bravuconería su inseguridad, ha hecho que muchos fans que lo detestan hablen de una mayúscula controversia, el hecho es que éste mereció la victoria por decisión dividida que logró, ya que al menos intentó usar las manos, algo que al fin y al cabo marca la diferencia en un deporte que consiste en conectar y querer conectar golpes. Las puntuaciones fueron de excesivo 97-92, de 96-93 y de 94-95.
Con sus primeras pruebas con ganchos López dio muestra de su explosividad y peligro, llevándose además Martín la peor parte en un choque de cabezas, fracturándose la nariz. En el segundo asalto López cometió uno de sus característicos errores al precipitarse en una de sus arremetidas y un cruzado diestro le alcanzó mal posicionado y le derribó. La repetición mostró que el puño golpeó a López más allá de la oreja. Con todo, el estadounidense no estaba dañado y en adelante siguió buscando una mano decisiva que quebrase a Martín.
Dado que Martín a penas lanzaba golpes por su extremadamente conservadora y móvil estrategia y López erraba muchísimos de los pocos golpes que lanzaba debido a su nefasto corte de ring y esto le hacía dudar, el combate se volvió muy táctico, por no decir tedioso. Así, los escasísimos jabs y todavía menos frecuentes directos zurdos de Martín y los eventuales directos diestros y ganchos zurdos de López llegaron de forma completamente aislada e irregular, haciendo que el combate estuviese en general muy igualado.
De todos modos, aunque en el séptimo asalto Martín podría haberse anotado un knockdown casi idéntico al del segundo asalto (esta vez el árbitro no hizo cuenta, ya que el golpe de nuevo fue cerca de la nuca y casi más un empujón que un puño), el visitante no se hizo ningún favor, al igual que su compatriota Samuel Carmona, poniendo muchísima más actividad en sus piernas que en sus manos. Esto inevitablemente le hizo perder rounds, ya que en ocasiones su falta de combatividad fue total, pareciendo centrado únicamente en evitar daños, así que incluso un López totalmente desorientado tácticamente pudo superar a penas un par de jabs con mera actividad y escasísimos golpes de poder.
En 2017, Martín cometió el error de combatir con demasiados cruces de golpes ante Anthony Yigit, fallo que desde entonces ha estado lejos de volver a repetir, siendo su boxeo enormemente defensivo y con poquísimos riesgos, algo que le sirve, gracias a su habilidad, para lograr ofrecer actuaciones que resultan intrincadas para sus oponentes. Con todo, aunque desde la óptica de un púgil por debajo del top 15 puede ser enormemente meritorio lograr sus resultados y sus actuaciones, para un boxeador que teóricamente aspira a disputar un mundial y ganarlo esto no es ni mucho menos suficiente. Es decir, hay una línea que separa a quienes combaten para evitar el knockout y recibir elogios y quienes dan la talla como campeones cuando hace falta.
Por su parte, López simplemente no ha aprendido nada de su derrota ante Kambosos ni ha evolucionado un ápice, sino que sigue siendo el mismo despropósito táctico que, pese a tener un sinfín de cualidades físicas, no sabe aprovechar sus virtudes por una total falta de inteligencia de ring y de realismo sobre sus limitaciones. De hecho, con su actitud tras el combate, sus absurdidades en el pesaje y sus declaraciones faltas de humildad y racionalidad entre peleas, todavía hace peores sus malas actuaciones, pareciendo inviable que pueda lograr una victoria ante un peso superligero de élite si combate de esa manera y, lo que es peor, si tiene esa mentalidad.
En este sentido hay que subrayar una frase que López dijo unos días atrás y que da muestra de cómo ve las cosas: “Estamos en el negocio del entretenimiento, no en el negocio del boxeo”. Aunque lo cierto es que en la noche del sábado ni siquiera se vio entretenimiento…

Mixing in the ring the tremendous lack of precision of the American Teófimo López 18(13KO)-1 and the lack of work rate of the Spaniard Sandor Martín 40(13KO)-3, the eliminator match in which they clashed was simply a fight to forget. Actually, the only thing that was showed was that neither of them deserves to fight in a world title bout.
In any case, while Lopez’s horrendous attitude, in which he tries to compensate his insecurity with bravado, has caused many fans to talk about a major controversy in the bout, the fact remains that he deserved the split decision victory he achieved, since at least he tried to use his hands, something that at the end of the day is necessary in a sport that consists of landing and wanting to land punches. The scores were excessive 97-92, 96-93 and 94-95.
With his first tests with hooks, López showed his explosiveness and danger, and Martín also took the brunt of a clash of heads, fracturing his nose. In the second round López made one of his characteristic errors by rushing into one of his lunges and a right hook caught him in a bad position and knocked him down. The replay showed that the punch struck Lopez beyond the ear. However, the American was not hurt and from then on he continued looking for a decisive hand.
Given that Martín hardly threw punches due to an extremely conservative and mobile strategy and López missed many of the few punches he did throw due to his disastrous ring cut (and this made him hesitate), the fight became very tactical, not to say tedious. Thus, the very few jabs and even less frequent left hands from the southpaw Martín and the eventual right hands and left hooks from López landed in a completely isolated and irregular manner, making the fight generally very even.
In any case, although in the seventh round Martín could have scored a knockdown almost identical to the one in the second round (this time the referee did not count, since the blow was again close to the back of the head and almost more of a push than a shot), the visitor did himself no favors, just like his compatriot Samuel Carmona, putting much more activity into his legs than into his hands. This inevitably made him lose rounds, as at times he showed a complete lack of combativeness, seeming focused solely on avoiding damage. So then even a totally tactically clueless López overcame a couple of jabs from his opponent with mere activity and very few power shots.
In 2017, Martín made the mistake of fighting with too many exchanges against Athony Yigit, error that since then he has been far from repeating. His boxing is now extremely defensive and with very few risks, something that serves him well, thanks to his ability, to offer performances that are intricate for their opponents. However, although from the point of view of a boxer below the top 15 it can be enormously meritorious to achieve his results and his performances, for a boxer who theoretically aspires to compete in a world championship and win it, this is far from enough. That is to say, there is a line that separates those who fight to avoid knockout and receive praise and those who rise to the ocassion as champions when necessary.
For his part, López simply has not learned anything from his defeat against Kambosos nor has he evolved a bit, but rather continues to be a tactical mess that, despite having endless physical qualities, does not know how to take advantage of his virtues due to a total lack of ring intelligence and lack of realism about his limitations. In fact, with his attitude after the fight, his absurdities at the weigh-in and his statements between fights lacking humbleness and rationality he makes his poor performances even worse. So it seems unfeasible that he could score a victory against an elite super lightweight if he fights in that way and, what is worse, with that mindset.
In this sense, it is necessary to highlight a sentence that López said a few days ago and that shows how he sees things: «We are in the entertainment business, not the boxing business.» Although the truth is that on Saturday night there wasn’t even entertainment…
