Previa: El evento de PBC Frank Martin vs. Michel Rivera cierra la temporada de las grandes promotoras

Estamos a poco más de una semana para Navidad, así que prácticamente todas las mayores promotoras y muchas de las medianas han cerrado ya su temporada. Una de las excepciones en esta tónica es Premier Boxing Champions, conglomerado promocional que este sábado ofrecerá su última velada del año con una cartelera que contará con tres interesantes duelos eliminatorios televisados por Showtime desde la sala Chelsea en el Cosmopolitan de Las Vegas, Estados Unidos.
¿Una nueva figura en el peso ligero?
La división del peso ligero es una de las que más llama la atención de los aficionados teniendo nombres tan conocidos como Devin Haney, Vasiliy Lomachenko, Gervonta Davis, Shakur Stevenson o Ryan García y un numeroso grupo de aspirantes no tan famosos pero con posibilidades de anotarse triunfos sobre algunos de los boxeadores del top. Así, realmente a la categoría de las 135 lb (61,2 kg) no le falta ni interés ni competencia en la cumbre, si bien este sábado podría despuntar definitivamente una nueva estrella en ascenso con el duelo eliminatorio WBA entre el estadounidense Frank “The Ghost” Martin 16(12KO)-0 y el dominicano Michel “La Zarza Ali” Rivera 24(14KO)-0.
Estos son dos invictos y jóvenes púgiles con gran habilidad, proyección, buena pegada y algunas brillantes actuaciones que afrontan un duelo decisivo para demostrar sus potenciales y además situarse definitivamente al alcance de una mayúscula pugna, ya sea como retador del titular regular Gervonta Davis o del campeón indiscutido Devin Haney. Así, realmente parece un choque que merece mucha atención.
En él, el favorito es Martin, si bien sólo con un pequeño margen. Y es que Rivera tiene precisión, velocidad de manos y buenos recursos, e incluso quizás un ligero margen en experiencia de calidad, pero ha mostrado más brechas que Martin, que a penas ha perdido asaltos hasta la fecha, que tiene un ritmo y una cadencia de golpeo superiores y que es más versátil.
Por ello, teniendo en cuenta que el estadounidense además parece más astuto, sabe competir mejor y tiene más velocidad de piernas y solidez general (algo en lo que pesa una carrera amateur muy superior a la de Rivera), podría lograr la victoria si utiliza sus cualidades correctamente y no deja que Rivera explote las suyas en una pelea táctica con escasa actividad.
Por un hueco en el top supermedio
Dado que en el peso supermedio Canelo Álvarez es el campeón indiscutido, en la división hay muchos boxeadores que esperan con impaciencia una oportunidad mundialista. Algunos de ellos aguardan con los brazos cruzados a que les toque la lotería, mientras que otros pugnan entre sí para intentar ganarse una oportunidad ante el mexicano o, al menos, intentar ocupar un hueco en el top 3 de la división a la espera de que surja una gran oportunidad o un título quede vacante.
Este es el caso del invicto, bronce nacional ruso, Vladimir Shishkin 13(8KO)-0, que el sábado intentará situarse como 2º IBF (por detrás del retador obligatorio William Scull) ganando una eliminatoria semifinal ante el venezolano José “Bolivita” Uzcátegui 32(27KO)-4. Por otro lado, para Shishkin esta no sólo es una ocasión perfecta para escalar decisivamente en los rankings, sino que también podrá darse a conocer ante el gran público e incluso intentar hacer una declaración de intenciones venciendo a un extitular mundial que se enfrentó a Caleb Plant y que estaba emplazado a medirse a David Benavídez.
En teoría, Shishkin debería poder utilizar su técnica y llevarse los asaltos conectando sus directos desde la distancia media ante un Uzcátegui que no gana un combate relevante desde 2018, que perdió contra Lionell Thompson en diciembre de 2019 y que desde entonces sólo ha vencido tres rodajes sencillos. Sin embargo, Uzcátegui es un púgil que ha dado positivo en control antidopaje por EPO, que tiene gran pegada y que podría tener ventaja en potencia y fuerza, sobre todo en la distancia corta, así que, estando ante una pelea trascendental para su futuro, es posible que el venezolano pueda encontrar un “impulso extra” que le haga muy peligroso.
Un mundial contra “Manny” Rodríguez
Como el campeón indiscutido del peso gallo Naoya Inoue va a ascender al peso supergallo próximamente, los cuatro cinturones mundiales de la división quedarán vacantes, motivo por el cual la eliminatoria IBF que disputarán el ruso Nikolay Potapov 23(11KO)-2(1)-1 y el filipino Vincent Astrolabio 17(12KO)-3(1) resulta crucial. Y es que el vencedor seguramente combatirá contra Emmanuel “Manny” Rodríguez por el cinto IBF cuando éste quede vacante.
El combate Potapov-Astrolabio tiene además otro tipo de aliciente. En el caso del ruso, éste recibe quizás su última gran oportunidad después de haber sufrido dos veredictos controvertidos en Estados Unidos contra Stephon Young y Joshua Greer, mientras que el filipino se ha visto catapultado a un gran escenario después de darle la vuelta a su trayectoria como piedra de toque venciendo contra pronóstico a Guillermo Rigondeaux.
Así, dos púgiles que no se pueden permitir un fallo se verán las caras en un encuentro en el que se enfrentarán la ortodoxia de un Potapov más ordenado pero que ha tenido problemas para marcar claramente la diferencia en el nivel alto y un Astrolabio más potente y explosivo pero con un boxeo un tanto tosco y simple que a veces le ha lastrado de forma determinante.
En Estados Unidos, esta cartelera será emitida por Showtime el sábado desde las 22:00 ET/19:00 PT, las 4:00 de la madrugada en hora española.

We are just over a week away from Christmas, so practically all the biggest companies and many of the medium-sized ones have already closed their seasons. One of the exceptions is Premier Boxing Champions, promotional conglomerate that this Saturday will offer its last evening of the year with a triple-header that will feature three interesting eliminator fights televised by Showtime from the Chelsea at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, United States.
A new lightweight star?
The lightweight division is one of the weight classes that attracts more attention from the fans, having such well-known names as Devin Haney, Vasiliy Lomachenko, Gervonta Davis, Shakur Stevenson or Ryan García and a large group of not-so-famous challengers but with chances of scoring victories over some of the top fighters. Thus, at 135 lb (61.2 kg) there is no lack of interest or competition, although this Saturday a new rising star could definitely emerge in the division with the WBA eliminator match between American Frank “The Ghost” Martin 16(12KO)-0 and Dominican Michel “La Zarza Ali” Rivera 24(14KO)-0.
These are two undefeated young fighters with great ability, projection, good punching power and some brilliant performances who are facing a decisive fight to demonstrate their potential and also get within reach of a major fight, either as a challenger to the regular titlist Gervonta Davis or the undisputed champion Devin Haney. So, it really looks like a clash that deserves a lot of attention.
In it, the favorite is Martin, although only with a small difference. Rivera has precision, hand speed, good technical resources and perhaps even a slight margin in quality experience, but he has shown more flaws than Martin, who has barely lost rounds to date, who has a higher pace and superior work rate and who is more versatile.
Therefore, taking into account that the American also seems more cunning, knows how to compete better and has more leg speed and solidity (something favored by an amateur career far superior to Rivera’s), he could achieve victory if he uses his qualities correctly and does not let Rivera exploit his virtues in a tactical fight with little activity.
Fighting for a place at super middleweight top
Given that Canelo Álvarez is the undisputed champion at super middleweight, there are many boxers in the division who are eagerly awaiting a world title opportunity. Some of them just sit back waiting to hit the jackpot, while others fight each other to try to earn a chance against the Mexican or, at least, put their names in the top 3 of the rankings waiting for a great opportunity or for a title to become vacant.
This is the case of the undefeated, Russian national bronze medalist, Vladimir Shishkin 13(8KO)-0, who on Saturday will try to climb to the number 2 spot in the IBF list (behind mandatory challenger William Scull) winning a semifinal eliminator against Venezuelan José «Bolivita» Uzcátegui 32(27KO)-4. On the other hand, for Shishkin this is not only a perfect opportunity for improving his position in the rankings, but he will also be able to make himself known to the general public and even try to make a statement by beating a former world champion who faced Caleb Plant and who was scheduled to face David Benavídez.
In theory, Shishkin could use his technique and win rounds by connecting his straight shots from medium distance against Uzcátegui, who has not won a relevant fight since 2018, who lost against Lionell Thompson in December 2019 and who since then has only won three easy bouts. However, Uzcátegui is a fighter who has tested positive for EPO, who has a great punch and who could have an advantage in power and strength, especially at short distance. So, facing a decisive fight for his future, it is possible that the Venezuelan could find an «extra boost» that makes him very dangerous.
A world title bout against «Manny» Rodríguez
With undisputed bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue moving up to super bantamweight in the near future, the division’s four world belts will be vacant, which is why the IBF eliminator between Russian Nikolay Potapov 23(11KO)-2(1)-1 and Filipino Vincent Astrolabio 17(12KO)-3(1) is crucial. The winner will surely fight against Emmanuel «Manny» Rodríguez for the IBF belt when it becomes vacant.
The Potapov-Astrolabio fight also has another kind of importance for the participants. In the case of the Russian, he receives perhaps his last big opportunity after having suffered two controversial verdicts in the United States against Stephon Young and Joshua Greer, while the Filipino has seen himself catapulted to a big stage after turning his career around beating Guillermo Rigondeaux in an upset.
Thus, two fighters who cannot fail will face each other in a match in which will clash the orthodoxy of a more ordered Potapov, but who has had trouble clearly winning fights at the high level, and a more powerful and explosive fighter as Astrolabio, but with a somewhat crude and simple boxing that sometimes has affected him in a decisively negative way.
Showtime will be broadcast these fights in the United States on Saturday from 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT, 3:00 a.m. UK time.
