Señoras y señores, hemos llegado ya al último fin de semana intenso del año, que será sucedido por una drástica bajada de la actividad. Esa situación se prolongará incluso durante las primeras semanas del año 2023, en las cuales, como en cada temporada, costará que el ritmo se recupere. Así que, si alguien estaba pensando en hacer un maratón de boxeo en directo, esta será su última oportunidad en un cierto tiempo para enlazar un notable número de eventos.
Viernes 16 de diciembre
El Centre Gervais Auto de Shawinigan, Canadá, acogerá una velada de Eye of the Tiger Management emitida por ESPN+ en la que el invicto peso pesado ruso Arslanbek “Lion” Makhmudov 15(14KO)-0, 4º WBC y 5º WBA dará un enorme paso atrás después de su trabajada victoria por decisión unánime ante Carlos Takam enfrentándose al alemán Michael Wallisch 23(16KO)-5(5). Éste ha sido noqueado por Gassiev, Joyce, Ajagba, etc., así que otra cosa que no sea un triunfo antes del límite de Makhmudov en la primera mitad sería sorprendente.
En el respaldo, la prometedora peso superwélter canadiense, con gran carrera amateur, Mary Spencer 7(5KO)-0 afrontará su mayor test hasta la fecha como profesional peleando contra la excampeona mundial belga Femke Hermans 13(5KO)-4(1), que se ha enfrentado tanto a Claressa Shields como a Savannah Marshall. Por otro lado, el peso medio canadiense Steven “Bang Bang” Butler 31(26KO)-3(3)-1 intentará lograr su cuarta victoria consecutiva, y defender su posición como 14º IBF y 15º WBC, peleando contra el estadounidense Joshua “Young Gun” Conley 17(11KO)-4(2)-1, púgil que ha sufrido sus derrotas recientes ante Derevyanchenko, Carlos Adames y Julian Williams.
El viernes también se puede destacar una velada desde el Barys Arena en Astana, Kazajistán, en la que el imbatido peso gallo kazajo Yelshat “Kazakh Warrior” Nikhemttolla 17(5KO)-0-1 tratará de ingresar en el ranking WBC peleando por un título menor ante el campeón filipino del peso supermosca Renz “The Jaguar” Rosia 17(9KO)-9(2)-1, que ha padecido largas inactividades pero que en su penúltimo combate derrotó al exaspirante mundial Aston Palicte.
Además, en ese cartel el prospecto del peso pesado Nursultan Amanzholov 4(3KO)-0 disputará su primer combate a ocho asaltos ante el resistente argentino Kevin Nicolás Espíndola 7(2KO)-6; el competente peso wélter Sagadat Rakhmankul 8(6KO)-4(1) tratará de regresar a la senda del triunfo (tras perder en competidos combates ante dos invictos) enfrentándose al brasileño Paulo César Galdino 12(8KO)-6(4); y la prospecta estadounidense Rosalinda Rodríguez 13(3KO)-0 intentará acercarse a la parte alta del ranking WBC del peso gallo y prepararse para mayores retos peleando contra la dura y experimentada exretadora mundial argentina Débora Vanesa Gómez 8(1KO)-8-2.
Por lo demás, el viernes se pueden mencionar estos otros duelos:
-En el Pabellón de Esgrima del Centro Olímpico de Santo Domingo, República Dominicana, emitido por YouTube, el prospecto cubano del peso semipesado Ernesbadi Begué 7(5KO)-0 comparará su rendimiento al de Diego Pacheco peleando contra un rival de éste como el brasileño Lucas de Abreu 14(11KO)-1(1). En el respaldo, el olímpico dominicano Euri Cedeño 2(2KO)-0 se anotará un knockout en una pelea del peso medio ante Julio de Jesus Rodríguez 27(24KO)-4(4).
-En el Sports Connexion de Coventry, Reino Unido, retransmitido por YouTube, el invicto peso pluma Raza Hamza 17(7KO)-0-1 disputará su mayor prueba hasta la fecha ante un púgil tenaz y con experiencia como James Beech Jr. 14(2KO)-3(1), que sólo ha sufrido tropiezos ante Dennis McCann, Brad Foster y Chris Bourke.
-En el Estadio Delmi de Salta, Argentina, el campeón de Argentina del peso pluma Nicolás “Pitbull” Botelli 13(7KO)-7(4) realizará su primera defensa ante un Fabián Orozco 28(10KO)-13(6)-4 ante el que será claro favorito.
Sábado 17 de diciembre
El mejor evento de la semana será el organizado por PBC, que cerrará el calendario 2022 de las grandes promotoras mundiales con una cartelera emitida por Showtime y que estará encabezada por tres eliminatorias: una WBA del peso ligero entre Michel Rivera y Frank Martin, otra IBF del peso supermedio entre José Uzcátegui y Vladimir Shishkin y otra IBF del peso gallo entre Nikolay Potapov y Vincent Astrolabio. Unas horas antes será cuando BOXXER cerrará su campaña 2022 con una cartelera televisada por Sky desde el Bournemouth International Centre de Bournemouth, Reino Unido. En el combate estelar participará el peso crucero británico Chris “The Gentleman” Billam-Smith 16(11KO)-1, excampeón de Europa clasificado como 2º WBO, 3º IBF y 4º WBA que el año que viene seguramente disputará, como mínimo, una eliminatoria. Para mantenerse rodado, Billam-Smith afrontará una pelea teóricamente sencilla ante el kosovar Armend “The Bombardier” Xhoxhaj 14(7KO)-2(2) que, aunque viene de un triunfo contra pronóstico en Alemania, fue destruido en cuatro rounds por Mateusz Masternak.
Acompañando al Billam-Smith vs. Xhoxhaj se desarrollará un campeonato británico del peso semipesado entre el titular Dan Azeez 17(11KO)-0 y Rocky Fielding 30(18KO)-2(2) y el peso wélter Michael McKinson 22(2KO)-1(1) buscará regresar a la senda del triunfo (tras ser batido por Vergil Ortiz Jr.) venciendo al nicaragüense Roberto “Dinamita” Arriaza 19(14KO)-4(3), que en su día estuvo muy bien clasificado pero que ahora es usado como piedra de toque por púgiles con aspiraciones internacionales.
Otra cartelera que sobresale es la que se desarrollará en el Parc des Expositions de Nantes, Francia, emitida por ESPN+, dado que en ella participarán dos prometedores púgiles como el peso supermedio Christian “Solide” Mbilli 22(20KO)-0 y el peso superwélter Souleymane Cissokho 15(9KO)-0, quienes en teoría afrontarán peleas descendiendo de división.
Y es que Cissokho combatirá en el peso wélter por un título menor del Consejo ante el sudafricano Thulani Mbenge 19(15KO)-1, 5º WBC que venció antes del límite al “Títere” Vázquez. Por su parte, Mbilli se enfrentará en el peso medio al veterano estadounidense Vaughn “The Animal” Alexander 17(10KO)-6(1)-1, que hace un año derrotó contra pronóstico a Luis Arias. Así, en principio, dependiendo de con qué facilidad den el peso y cuáles sean sus rendimientos, Cissokho y Mbilli abrirán su abanico de posibilidades futuras de manera muy interesante.
El sábado también sobresalen estos otros combates:
-En el Gradska Športska Dvorana Bilankuša de Solin, Croacia, el olímpico Luka Plantić 3(3KO)-0 continuará con su rápido avance profesional y, en su cuarta pelea, se enfrentará al experimentado armenio Khoren Gevor 35(17KO)-10(2), que viene de obtener una victoria contra pronóstico ante un invicto en Polonia.
-En el CCDC Gym de La Trinidad, Filipinas, el joven prospecto del peso supergallo, top 15 en tres organismos, Carl Jammes “Wonder Boy” Martin 20(16KO)-0 disputará su tercer combate del año ante el exaspirante mundial tailandés Komgrich Nantapech 31(22KO)-5(1).
-En Moscú, Rusia, emitido por Boets Tv, el extop 15 Aik Shakhnazaryan 26(13KO)-4(2)-1 se enfrentará al tanzano Ismail Galiatano 11(3KO)-4(1)-3, que este año ha ofrecido dos meritorias actuaciones peleando en Polonia.
-En el Commerce Casino de Commerce, Estados Unidos, DAZN ofrecerá un evento de Golden Boy Promotions que, salvo alguna excepción, tendrá combates tan mal emparejados que realmente parecen una burla. En el estelar el invicto peso wélter mexicano Raúl “Cugar” Curiel 11(9KO)-0 se enfrentará al estadounidense Brad Solomon 29(9KO)-5(2), que no gana un combate algo destacable desde 2018 y que viene de perder contra un púgil con récord 13-26.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have already reached the last intense weekend of the year, which will be followed by a drastic drop in activity. This situation will continue even during the first weeks of 2023, in which, as in every season, boxing will not recover its rhythm immediately. So, if anyone was thinking of doing a live boxing marathon, this will be his last chance for a while to watch a remarkable number of back-to-back events.
Friday, December 16
The Center Gervais Auto in Shawinigan, Canada, will be the venue for an Eye of the Tiger Management’s evening broadcast on ESPN+. In it, undefeated Russian heavyweight Arslanbek “Lion” Makhmudov 15(14KO)-0, WBC number 4 and WBA number 5, will take a huge step back after his hard-fought unanimous decision victory over Carlos Takam facing German Michael Wallisch 23(16KO)-5(5). This boxer has been knocked out by Gassiev, Joyce, Ajagba, etc., so anything other than a stoppage win by Makhmudov in the first half would be surprising.
In the support, promising Canadian super welterweight, with a great amateur career, Mary Spencer 7(5KO)-0 will face her biggest test to date as a professional fighting Belgian former world champion Femke Hermans 13(5KO)-4(1), who has faced off against both Claressa Shields and Savannah Marshall. On the other hand, Canadian middleweight Steven “Bang Bang” Butler 31(26KO)-3(3)-1 will try to achieve his fourth consecutive victory, and defend his position as IBF 14th and WBC 15th, fighting against American Joshua “Young Gun” Conley 17(11KO)-4(2)-1, a fighter who has suffered his recent losses to Derevyanchenko, Carlos Adames and Julian Williams.

In the main event, unbeaten Kazakh bantamweight Yelshat “Kazakh Warrior” Nikhemttolla 17(5KO)-0-1 will try to enter the WBC ranking fighting for a minor belt against Filipino national super flyweight champion Renz “The Jaguar” Rosia 17(9KO)-9(2)-1, who has suffered long layoffs but in his penultimate bout defeated former world challenger Aston Palicte.
In addition, on the undercard, heavyweight prospect Nursultan Amanzholov 4(3KO)-0 will face his first eight-round fight against the resistant Argentinian Kevin Nicolás Espíndola 7(2KO)-6; the competent welterweight Sagadat Rakhmankul 8(6KO)-4(1) will try to return to the winning ways (after losing in competitive fights against two unbeaten fighters) facing Brazilian Paulo César Galdino 12(8KO)-6(4); and American prospect Rosalinda Rodríguez 13(3KO)-0 will seek to get close to the top of the WBC bantamweight ranking, and prepare for bigger things, by fighting the tough and experienced former world title challenger Débora Vanesa Gómez 8(1KO)-8-2.

Saturday, December 17
The best event of the week will be the one organized by PBC, company that will close the 2022 calendar of the major world promoters with a card televised by Showtime and headlined by three eliminators: a lightweight fight between Michel Rivera and Frank Martin, a super middleweight bout between José Uzcátegui and Vladimir Shishkin and a bantamweight clash between Nikolay Potapov and Vincent Astrolabio. A few hours before, BOXXER will close its 2022 campaign with a bill televised by Sky from the Bournemouth International Center in Bournemouth, United Kingdom. The main event will feature British cruiserweight Chris «The Gentleman» Billam-Smith 16(11KO)-1, former European champion ranked WBO 2nd, IBF 3rd and WBA 4th that next year will surely face, at least, an eliminator. To stay busy, Billam-Smith will face a theoretically easy fight against Kosovar Armend «The Bombardier» Xhoxhaj 14(7KO)-2(2) who, although he comes from an upset victory in Germany, was destroyed in four rounds by Mateusz Masternak.
Supporting the Billam-Smith vs. Xhoxhaj event, Dan Azeez 17(11KO)-0 and Rocky Fielding 30(18KO)-2(2) will battle in a British light heavyweight championship and welterweight Michael McKinson 22(2KO)-1(1) will seek to return to the winning ways (after being beaten by Vergil Ortiz Jr.) defeating the Nicaraguan Roberto «Dinamita» Arriaza 19(14KO)-4(3), who in the past was very well ranked but who is now used as a stepping stone by fighters with international aspirations.
Another card that stands out is the one that will take place at the Parc des Expositions in Nantes, France, broadcast by ESPN+, since in it will participate two promising fighters such as super middleweight Christian “Solide” Mbilli 22(20KO)-0 and super welterweight Souleymane Cissokho 15(9KO)-0, who in theory will face fights moving down in weight.
Cissokho will fight in the welterweight division for a WBC minor title against South African Thulani Mbenge 19(15KO)-1, WBC number 5 who defeated “Títere” Vázquez by stoppage. For his part, Mbilli will face, in a middleweight bout, American veteran Vaughn “The Animal” Alexander 17(10KO)-6(1)-1, who a year ago defeated Luis Arias in an upset. Thus, in principle, depending on how easily they make weight and what their performances are, Cissokho and Mbilli will open up their range of future possibilities in a very interesting way.
