El invicto wélter, top 15 en tres organismos, Rashidi Ellis fue derribado y vencido por el pegador Roimán Villa

El pegador venezolano-colombiano Roimán “Flaco de Oro” Villa 26(24KO)-1 demostró en el respaldo del Davis-García que su triunfo contra pronóstico ante Janelson Figueroa no fue sólo un golpe de suerte. Y es que Villa remontó una difícil primera mitad, derribó dos veces al hábil estadounidense Rashidi “Speedy” Ellis 24(15KO)-1 y se hizo con una merecida victoria por decisión mayoritaria. Las puntuaciones fueron justas: 114-112, 114-112, 113-113.
Haciendo honor a su apodo “Speedy” (rápido en inglés), en la primera parte Ellis se desplazó ágil por el cuadrilátero esquivando, sacando muy veloces jabs y directos diestros para dificultar el avance del agresivo Villa y contragolpeando sus fuertes puños con explosivos hooks, mostrando cuál es la diferencia entre boxear y correr. De hecho, cuando encontró la oportunidad, como en el cuarto round, el estadounidense no dudó en incluso parar los pies y sacar buenos golpes de poder que sacudieron un tanto al visitante.
No obstante, Villa no se rindió, y siguió avanzando e intentando mermar a su contrincante con duros hooks al cuerpo, pero tuvo que esperar hasta alrededor de la mitad para empezar a tener éxitos consistentes, que puntualmente se vieron acompañados por algunos golpes ilegales por debajo de la cinturilla y en la nuca.
En cualquier caso, aunque el estadounidense continuó llegando con jabs y teniendo momentos de eficacia en el boxeo sin iniciativa, “El Flaco de Oro” empezó a dar forma a una clara remontada, logrando cada vez anotar más ganchos ante su contrincante, que empezaba a dar muestras de cansancio, que cada vez recibía más puños estático y que recurría al clinch de manera creciente.
Ellis necesitaba encontrar un segundo aire y recuperar confianza si quería evitar la derrota, ya que daba la sensación de que estaba empezando a verse desmoralizado por la acometividad del visitante y de que su resistencia a los golpes podía terminar siendo quebrada. Finalmente, Ellis pareció recuperar algo de eficacia, pero no fue suficiente para impedir que Villa siguiese castigándole hasta que en el duodécimo asalto le derribó dos veces con ganchos zurdos y le situó en críticos apuros que casi le llevaron al KOT.
Más allá de que si hubiese evitado los knockdowns finales quizás los jueces le habrían dado el triunfo, el hecho es que Ellis no parece estar a un nivel tan alto como muchos aseguraban. Por lo que se refiere a Villa, sumando dos triunfos en Estados Unidos consecutivos anotándose knockdowns antes púgiles con cualidades, ha dado un giro radical a su carrera y se ha afianzado definitivamente en una nueva fase, que este año le podría llevar a un choque ante un peso wélter de mucho nivel o renombre.
Hay que recordar que Ellis era 6º WBO, 8º IBF y 10º WBC antes de esta derrota y que Villa era 9º IBF, lo que se podría traducir en un excelente posicionamiento para este último en próximas actualizaciones de los rankings.

The Venezuelan-Colombian puncher Roimán “Flaco de Oro” Villa 26 (24KO)-1 proved in the Davis-García support that his upset victory over Janelson Figueroa was not just a stroke of luck. The brave Villa rallied after a difficult first half, knocked down twice the skilled American Rashidi “Speedy” Ellis 24(15KO)-1 and scored a well-deserved victory by majority decision. The scores were fair: 114-112, 114-112, 113-113.
Honoring his nickname «Speedy», in the first part of the bout Ellis moved agile around the ring dodging, landing very fast jabs and straight hands to hinder the advance of the aggressive Villa and counterpunching his hard shots with explosive hooks, showing the difference between boxing and running. In fact, when he found the right opportunity, like in the fourth round, the American didn’t hesitate to even stop his feet and connect some good power shots that rocked Villa a bit.
However, the visitor did not give up, and kept moving forward trying to wear down his opponent with hard hooks to the body, but he had to wait until halfway through the fight to start having consistent successes, which were occasionally accompanied by some illegal shots below the belt or to the back of the head.
In any case, although the American continued to land jabs and had moments of efficiency boxing without having the initiative, «El Flaco de Oro» was clearly coming back, as he was managing to land more and more hooks against his opponent, who was beginning to show signs of fatigue, who received an increasing amount of punches in static positions and who resorted too much to clinches.
Ellis needed to find a second wind and regain confidence if he wanted to avoid defeat, since it seemed that he was beginning to be demoralized by the aggressiveness of the visitor and that his punch resistance could end up being broken. Eventually, Ellis seemed to regain some efficiency, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Villa from punishing him until, in the twelfth round, the Colombian knocked him down twice with left hooks and put him in critical trouble that nearly led to a TKO.
Beyond the fact that if he had avoided the final knockdowns perhaps the judges would have given him the victory, Ellis does not seem to be at the level that many claimed. With regard to Villa, with two consecutive victories in the United States scoring knockdowns against boxers with qualities, he has given a radical turn to his career and has definitively established himself in a new phase, which this year could lead him to a clash against a high level or even renowned welterweight.
It must be remembered that Ellis was WBO number 6, IBF number 8 and WBC number 10 before this defeat and that Villa was IBF number 9, so the latter could achieve an excellent position in future ranking updates.
