Los mejores combates del fin de semana (13-14/1/2023)

En las primeras semanas del año nunca hay gran actividad boxística, y en 2023 no iba a ser diferente. Ejemplo de ello es que, más allá de un par de eventos mencionables, en las próximas jornadas a penas habrá peleas, menos aún relevantes. De hecho, más que hablar de los mejores combates del fin de semana, podríamos hablar de los combates menos malos.
Viernes 13 de enero
El único campeonato mundial de la semana será femenino, siendo este la aplazada unificación de coronas WBA-WBC del peso minimosca que sostendrán la canadiense Kim Clavel 16(3KO)-0 y la mexicana Jéssica Nery Plata 28(3KO)-2 desde el Place Bell de Laval, Canadá, televisado por ESPN+ (y otras ramas de esta cadena).
Las consideraciones respecto a la pelea se mantienen tal y como estaban para la primera fecha que tuvo. Es decir, aunque Plata es aguerrida, ésta carece de pegada y se enfrenta como visitante a la máxima promesa femenina de la escuadra de Yvon Michel, una Clavel que prácticamente no ha perdido rounds en su carrera profesional y que viene de derrotar ampliamente a la brava mexicana Yesenia Gómez. Por lo tanto, cualquier cosa que no sea un triunfo por decisión de la canadiense será sorprendente.
En el respaldo, el peso superligero Mazlum Akdeniz 17(8KO)-0 disputará su primer combate de 2023 y continuará recuperando moral tras su controvertida victoria sobre Erick Encinia enfrentándose a un púgil al que debería poder vencer con claridad como Cristian “El Gato Gordo” Bielma 19(7KO)-4(1)-2.
Se puede mencionar que el viernes, en el Chumash Casino de Santa Ynez, Estados Unidos, el peso pluma filipino John “The Lion” Dato 15(10KO)-1-1 disputará su combate más significativo desde su única derrota peleando contra el pegador local Jesús “El Perro Callejero” Ruiz 12(12KO)-1-1. Por otro lado, en el Embassy Suites Nashville SE de Murfreesboro, Estados Unidos, el peso superpluma Jeremy Hill 16(11KO)-3(1) tratará de regresar a la senda del triunfo ante el chileno Óscar Bravo 25(11KO)-11(2), púgil con experiencia de calidad y que en el pasado ofreció varias meritorias actuaciones ante rivales destacados.
Sábado 14 de enero
Indudablemente el mayor evento de la semana será el que ofrecerán Top Rank y ESPN. Los combates principales de este cartel serán dos peleas del peso pesado, siendo una entre el olímpico nigeriano Efe Ajagba y el invicto estadounidense Stephan Shaw y la otra entre el olímpico italiano Guido Vianello y el fogueado estadounidense Jonathan Rice. Por lo demás, en el sábado sólo se puede hacer mención de estos otros duelos:
-En el Korakuen Hall de Tokio, Japón, el 11º WBO, 12º WBA y 14º WBC del peso wélter Ryota Toyoshima 16(10KO)-2-1 buscará afianzar y mejorar su posicionamiento defendiendo su título OPBF y su cinto menor WBO ante el joven pegador Jin Sasaki 13(12KO)-1(1)-1.
-En las instalaciones de la Unión de Padres “Los Toritos” de Monte Grande, Argentina, TyC Sports emitirá una velada en la que Leandro Ariel “Huracán” Fonseca 14(6KO)-1-1, tras su meritoria actuación ante José Rosa, intentará proclamarse campeón de Sudamérica del peso wélter peleando por el título vacante ante Santiago Damián “El Tren” Sánchez 9(5KO)-8(1)-1, que viene de derrotar contra pronóstico en el primer round al resistente Luis Alberto Verón.
-En Milwaukee, Estados Unidos, el peso superligero Rolando Vargas 8(7KO)-1 disputará su segundo combate a ocho asaltos contra el fogueado Derrick Murray 17(6KO)-6(2)-1, que el año pasado perdió ajustadamente contra el prospecto Joshafat Ortiz. Por su parte, la excampeona mundial del peso superligero Mary “Merciless” McGee 27(15KO)-4 buscará recuperarse de su derrota en una dura batalla ante Chantelle Cameron enfrentándose a Dahianna Santana 40(16KO)-13(4).
-En el RT-Mehrzweckhalle de Regensburg, Alemania, el joven e invicto Leon Bauer 18(10KO)-0-1 tratará de sumar otra fácil victoria peleando en el peso semipesado contra el colombiano, sin poner a prueba, Hancel González 8(6KO)-0.

In the first weeks of the year there is never much boxing activity, and in 2023 it was not going to be different. An example of this is that, beyond a couple of mentionable events, in the next few days there will hardly be bouts, let alone relevant ones. In fact, rather than talking about the best fights, we could talk this time about the less bad fights of the weekend.
Friday, January 13
The only world championship of the week will be a female title fight, this being the postponed unification of the WBA-WBC light flyweight crowns in which will clash Canadian Kim Clavel 16(3KO)-0 and Mexican Jéssica Nery Plata 28(3KO)-2. This matchup will take place at the Place Bell in Laval, Canada, televised on ESPN+.
The considerations regarding the fight remain as they were for the first date it had. That is to say, although Plata is brave, she lacks punch and faces as a visitor the most promising female boxer in Yvon Michel’s squad, a boxer who almost hasn’t lost rounds in her professional career and who comes from widely defeating the tenacious Mexican Yesenia Gómez. So anything other than a decision win for Clavel will be surprising.

Saturday, January 14
Undoubtedly the biggest event of the week will be the one offered by Top Rank and ESPN. The main bouts on this card will be two heavyweight clashes, one between Nigerian Olympian Efe Ajagba and undefeated American Stephan Shaw and the other between Italian Olympian Guido Vianello and seasoned American Jonathan Rice.
