El peso superpluma cubano Pablo “The Judge” Vicente 21(16KO)-1 es por sus cualidades técnicas uno de los contendientes más interesantes de la división en estos momentos, algo de lo que dio muestra con la que debería haber sido una amplísima victoria sobre el venezolano Ángel “Humildad” Rodríguez 20(10KO)-3. Con todo, los jueces fueron sorprendentemente generosos con Rodríguez, quien hace dos peleas logró una controvertida victoria ante Mark Urvanov. Y es que a Vicente sólo se le dio una victoria mayoritaria y con puntuaciones ridículas de 95-95, 96-94 y un 97-93 algo más lógico.
La velocidad y la habilidad estaban del lado de Vicente, que impuso un centelleante jab y todavía más rápidos uno-dos para alcanzar a un Rodríguez que, cuando intentaba contragolpear, fallaba la mayoría de sus manos por las brillantes esquivas del cubano. En algún cruce en corta, Rodríguez puso voluntad y arrojó potentes ganchos que quizás pudieron confundir a algunos, pero por lo general el control táctico estuvo en manos de Vicente, que fue quien ofreció un trabajo más regular, sólido y eficaz.
A “Humildad” le faltaba mucha más cadencia de golpes, incluso aunque se arriesgase a fallar, puesto que sólo con insistencia aumentaría sus posibilidades de alcanzar a un oponente con tanta destreza defensiva. Sin embargo, aunque Rodríguez era quien avanzaba la mayoría del tiempo no dejaba volar sus manos los suficiente, esperando los ataques de Vicente para intentar contragolpearle, si bien “The Judge” era demasiado veloz y reaccionaba demasiado rápido con sus acciones elusivas como para que este plan tuviese éxito.
A la larga, pasada la mitad, el venezolano aumentó un tanto su número de ataques y asumió algo más de riesgo, pero el esquema general no varió, ya que erró la mayoría de sus ofensivas y Vicente, entre esquivas, conectó su jab y combinaciones en uno-dos arriba o variando alturas, en hook-uppercut, en gancho-directo, etc. De hecho, eventualmente Vicente incluso se centró en tomar la iniciativa y atacar como en el octavo round, por lo que, pese a su esfuerzo final y a algunos aciertos entonces, Rodríguez debería haber estado lejos del empate en cualquier cartulina de un oficial profesional.
Como Vicente era 5º WBA y Rodríguez era 7º WBA antes de este combate, de facto esta pugna fue casi como una eliminatoria que debería situar al cubano en el top 3 y muy cerca de una pugna trascendental para el acceso a una pelea mundialista ante el campeón Héctor Luis García. Ante éste podría ofrecer un choque táctico realmente interesante, si bien antes de poder apuntar a este objetivo deberá superar una eliminatoria final, estando clasificado por debajo del aspirante obligatorio Lamont Roach el fuerte y agresivo Otar Eranosyan.
Cuello venció en un round
Respecto al olímpico argentino Mirco Cuello 10(9KO)-0, éste sólo necesitó un asalto para vencer al dominicano Leivy Frías 12(10KO)-1(1) en un duelo del peso pluma que puso de manifiesto que el prospecto necesita un aumento de dificultad considerable para sus próximas subidas al ring.
Desde el comienzo Cuello atacó lanzando ganchos zudos abajo, directos diestros arriba y otros golpes de poder que fueron una advertencia de lo que iba a pasar. Y es que, aunque Frías intentó sacudirse la presión con alguna contraofensiva, Cuello continuó su ataque hasta tumbarlo con la derecha descendente de un uno-dos. Frías se levantó, pero Cuello está simplemente a un nivel diferente y por dos veces más lo derribó con derechas antes de la detención.

Cuban super featherweight Pablo “The Judge” Vicente 21(16KO)-1 is, due to his technical qualities, one of the most interesting contenders in the division at the moment, something he proved again with what should have been a wide victory over Venezuelan Ángel “Humildad” Rodríguez 20(10KO)-3. Still, the judges were surprisingly generous with Rodriguez, who two fights ago pulled off a controversial win over Mark Urvanov. This time Vicente only won by majority decision and ridiculous scorecards of 95-95, 96-94 and a somewhat more logical 97-93.
Speed and skill were on Vicente’s side, who landed a very fast jab and even quicker one-twos to hit Rodríguez, who tried to counterpunch but missed most of his hands due to the Cuban’s brilliant dodges. In some exchanges at close distance, Rodríguez threw powerful hooks that might have confused some, but in general Vicente was in tactical control and offered a more regular, solid and effective work.
The Venezuelan’s punch rate was too low, and he needed to increase it, since only with insistence would he had any chance of hitting an opponent with such defensive prowess. However, although Rodríguez advanced most of the time, he did not threw his punches enough, waiting for Vicente’s attacks to try to counterattack him, although «The Judge» was too fast and reacted too quickly with his elusive actions for this plan to be successful.
After the half-point, the Venezuelan attacked a bit more and assumed a little more risk, but the general trend did not change, since he missed most of his shots and Vicente, between dodges, connected his jab and combinations in one-two changing levels, in hook-uppercut, in hook-right hand, etc. In fact, eventually Vicente even tried to take the initiative and attack, like in the eighth round, so despite the final effort and some late success from Rodríguez, the latter should have been far from a draw on any card from a professional judge.
As Vicente was WBA number 5 and Rodríguez was number 7 before this fight, the bout was almost like an eliminator, and it should put the Cuban in the top 3 of the ranking and very close to a crucial fight for gaining access to a world title match against champion Hector Luis Garcia. Against him he could offer a really interesting tactical clash, although before aiming for this objective he will have to win a final eliminator, with the strong and aggressive Otar Eranosyan being ranked just below the mandatory challenger Lamont Roach.
Cuello won in one round
Regarding the Argentinian Olympian Mirco Cuello 10(9KO)-0, he only needed one round to defeat Dominican Leivy Frías 12(10KO)-1(1) in a featherweight duel that showed that the prospect needs to step-up in competition in his next ring appearances.
From the start Cuello attacked throwing left hooks downstairs, straight rights upstairs and other power shots that were a warning of what was to come. Despite Frías tried to shake off the pressure with some counteroffensives, Cuello continued his attack until he knocked down his opponent with a one-two. Frías got up, but Cuello is simply on a different level and dropped him twice with right hands before the stoppage.
