Cuando el WBC ordenó en su convención una eliminatoria del peso ligero entre Shakur Stevenson e Isaac Cruz era evidente que el combate no se iba a producir. Efectivamente, el conglomerado PBC, que tiene planes diferentes para el mexicano y que no estaba dispuesto a dejarle combatir en un evento de Top Rank, retiró de esta eliminatoria a Cruz. El turno para medirse a Stevenson en la antesala mundialista pasó a William Zepeda, pero como éste es representado por una empresa que intenta evitar al máximo los riesgos para sus boxeadores, también rechazó la oportunidad.
Así, finalmente la posibilidad de pelear en la eliminatoria WBC contra Stevenson le llegó al invicto pegador japonés Shuichiro Yoshino, un boxeador que no tiene un promotor estadounidense que pueda crear obstáculos innecesarios y que cuenta con la valentía para aceptar una pelea tan difícil. De ese modo, tras unos días de negociaciones, se confirmó oficialmente el pasado fin de semana que Stevenson y Yoshino combatirán el día 8 de abril en el Prudential Center de Newark, Estados Unidos, la ciudad del imbatido monarca en dos divisiones.
En el respaldo combatirán quizás los dos mayores prospectos actuales de Top Rank, ya que se subirán al ring el peso ligero Keyshawn Davis y el peso pesado Jared Anderson, estando por el momento sus oponentes sin confirmar oficialmente. Con todo, se filtró que el contrincante de Davis será el ghanés Emanuel Tagoe, más conocido por haber llegado a la última campana en un duelo de doce asaltos ante Ryan García. Respecto a Anderson no hay nada tan sólido, aunque algunos rumores apuntaron a un posible choque contra Jonathan Rice.
En resumen, este parece un interesante evento en el cual el ganador del combate estelar se situará a la espera de enfrentarse al vencedor del Haney-Lomachenko o de pelear por el cinto vacante WBC si es que el titular indiscutido que salga de él abandona sus cuatro cetros.
En la confirmación del evento, Stevenson destacó el coraje mostrado por Yoshino a diferencia de otros púgiles:
“Voy a hacerme con el control de la división del peso ligero y mi recorrido comenzará el 8 de abril en Newark. Shuichiro Yoshino es un boxeador invicto que estaba dispuesto a dar un paso adelante y pelear contra mí cuando tantos boxeadores estaban asustados. Mi último combate en el Prudential Center fue sólo el comienzo de lo que estoy construyendo en Jersey. Vamos a llenar el Prudential Center otra vez y mostrarle al mundo quién es realmente el futuro del boxeo”.
Por su parte, Yoshino se mostró muy respetuoso:
“Me siento muy honrado por pelear en Estados Unidos por primera vez. Estoy extremadamente concentrado y motivado. Estoy deseando pelear contra el gran campeón en dos divisiones Shakur Stevenson en su ciudad de Newark. Entrenaré duro antes de la pelea y espero mostrarles a los fans una emocionante victoria”.

When the WBC ordered a lightweight eliminator between Shakur Stevenson and Isaac Cruz it was clear that the bout was not going to happen. Indeed, the conglomerate PBC, which has different plans for the Mexican and is not willing to let him fight in a Top Rank event, withdrew Cruz from this possible bout. The turn to face Stevenson in the eliminator passed to William Zepeda, but since he is represented by Golden Boy Promotions, a company that tries to avoid risks for its boxers as much as possible, he also rejected the opportunity.
So the chance to fight in the WBC eliminator against Stevenson finally came to undefeated Japanese puncher Shuichiro Yoshino, a boxer with the courage to accept such a difficult fight and without an American promoter who could create unnecessary obstacles. Thus, after a few days of negotiations, it was officially confirmed last weekend that Stevenson and Yoshino will fight on April 8 at the Prudential Center in Newark, United States, the hometown of the unbeaten two division champion.
In the main support will participate Top Rank’s two best prospects, as lightweight Keyshawn Davis and heavyweight Jared Anderson will step into the ring, although their opponents are not officially confirmed yet. However, it was leaked that Davis’s opponent will be the Ghanaian Emanuel Tagoe, best known for reaching the last bell in a twelve-round bout against Ryan Garcia. Regarding Anderson, there is nothing so solid, although some rumors pointed to a possible clash against Jonathan Rice.
In summary, this looks like an interesting event in which the winner of the main fight will be in position to face the winner of the Haney-Lomachenko match or to battle for the vacant WBC belt if the undisputed titleholder relinquishes his four titles.
In announcement of this evening, Stevenson highlighted the courage shown by Yoshino unlike other fighters:
“I am taking over the lightweight division and my run will start on April 8 in Newark. Shuichiro Yoshino is an undefeated fighter who was willing to step up and fight me when so many fighters were scared. My last fight at the Prudential Center was just the start of what I’m building in Jersey. We are going to pack the Prudential Center again and show the world who the future of boxing really is.”
For his part, Yoshino was very respectful:
“I am very honored to be fighting in the U.S. for the first time. I’m extremely focused and motivated. I’m looking forward to fighting the great two-division champion, Shakur Stevenson, in his hometown of Newark. I’ll be training hard leading up to the fight and look forward to showing the fans an exciting victory!”
