Previa: Azim-Reyes, Chelli-Sims, Denny-Pauls y Dubois-Mashaury en evento de Boxxer este sábado

En muchos foros se pueden ver ya discusiones sobre si las veladas de Boxxer son más interesantes y útiles para el boxeo británico que las ofrecidas por Matchroom Boxing, que tiene sus miras puestas en mercados de todo el mundo y ya no presta tanta atención como antes a su tierra de origen. Al margen de que estas discusiones estén o no encaminadas de la manera correcta o de si un bando o el otro tiene razón, el hecho de que se planteen este tipo de cuestiones ya dice mucho del puesto que está ganando Boxxer entre un sector de los aficionados con sus veladas. Esta tendencia favorable para la citada compañía se seguirá afianzando este sábado con un evento desde el Wembley Arena de Londres conformado por combates que cuentan con interés por uno u otro motivo.
Chelli vs. Sims
Aunque no será el combate estelar del evento, en la velada destaca un cruce del peso supermedio en el que se verán las caras el campeón de Inglaterra Zak Chelli 12(6KO)-1-1 y el estadounidense con buena carrera amateur Anthony Sims Jr. 23(20KO)-1.
A este enfrentamiento el local Chelli accederá en una racha de cinco victorias, siendo la última de ellas la mayor de su carrera (ante el invicto y muy competente Germaine Brown), por lo que su equipo siente que está listo para anotarse una importante victoria que podría llevar su carrera a la escena internacional. Por su parte, Sims disputará su tercer combate en las Islas Británicas, y su mayor reto desde su inesperada derrota ante Roamer Angulo (2020), sin poderse permitir fallar si quiere que sus aspiraciones mundialistas sigan vivas.
Así, un púgil con destreza como Chelli pero con cierta irregularidad y menor experiencia, y un Sims con mucha más pegada pero con brechas en cuanto a su movilidad y a sus decisiones tácticas, deberían ofrecer una pugna entretenida, especialmente si ambos boxeadores se muestran tan motivados como deberían estarlo por esta oportunidad trascendental.
Campeonato de Inglaterra y eliminatoria británica
En principio el Chelli-Sims será sucedido en la cartelera por un campeonato de Inglaterra del peso medio entre el titular Tyler Denny 15(0KO)-2(1)-3 y el aspirante Brad “The Newquay Bomb” Pauls 16(9KO)-0. Este enfrentamiento además será una eliminatoria al título británico, así que el ganador se convertirá en aspirante obligatorio del campeón Denzel Bentley.
Si la pelea se hubiese producido hacia 2019, quizás hubiese sido vista de manera muy diferente, pero ahora mismo Denny está en una gran racha en la que ha sumado triunfos ante tres boxeadores invictos (Osaze, Wilson-Bent y Rea), mientras que Paul viene de tener más trabajo del esperado y de mostrar considerable cansancio en su paso adelante ante Ryan Kelly.
Por lo tanto, aunque existe la posibilidad de que la experiencia que Pauls adquirió en su último duelo le sirva para evolucionar, el hábil, zurdo y activo de manos Denny parte como favorito en las apuestas, si bien por poco margen. Y es que Denny casi siempre se ve inmerso en peleas muy igualadas y su falta de pegada le da una opción de éxito a Pauls si usa sus golpes de poder de la manera adecuada.
Azim y Dubois buscan seguir luciendo
Dos de los boxeadores que participarán en las peleas principales del evento son los destacados prospectos Adam “The Assassin” Azim 7(6KO)-0 y “Sweet” Caroline Dubois 5(4KO)-0, que buscarán brillar para seguir apoyando las buenas perspectivas que sus carreras generan. En el caso del peso superligero Azim, este ganador del premio BBC Sport ‘Young Fighter of the Year’ lució en las cinco rápidas victorias que obtuvo en 2022, siendo una de ellas ante el voluntarioso Rylan Charlton.
Azim piensa continuar este fulgurante avance en 2023, siendo abrumador favorito para imponerse al nicaragüense Santos Reyes 12(3KO)-0, quien pese estar invicto cuenta con muy poca pegada, con escasa velocidad de piernas y con una controvertida victoria ante Robin Zamora, de modo que resulta impensable que pueda dar la sorpresa como visitante ante un oponente con excelente control de la distancia y sensacional velocidad de manos.
Por otro lado, la peso ligero Dubois iba a medirse a la argentina Yamila Abellaneda, pero se informa de que finalmente se enfrentará a la sustituta tardía tanzana Feriche Mashaury 10(3KO)-7(2), boxeadora que fue batida en dos rounds tanto por Chantelle Cameron como por Terri Harper y que no tiene opciones de victoria.
Este evento será emitido en Reino Unido por Sky Sports Main Event y Sky Sports Arena desde las 19:00 del sábado (14:00 ET/11:00 PT), las 20:00 en hora española.

In many boxing forums there are already discussions about whether Boxxer’s evenings are more interesting and useful for British boxing than those offered by Matchroom Boxing, company that has its sights set on markets around the world and no longer pays as much attention to its land of origin. Regardless of whether or not these discussions are properly addressed or whether one side or the other is right, the fact that these types of talk takes place already says a lot about the position that Boxxer is gaining among a sector of fans with its evenings. The favorable trend for this company will continue to strengthen this Saturday, in the Wembley Arena in London, with an event composed of fights that have interest for one reason or another.
Chelli vs. Sims
Although it will not be the main event, in the card stands out a super middleweight clash in which the English champion Zak Chelli 12(6KO)-1-1 and the American with a good amateur career Anthony Sims Jr. 23(20KO)-1 will face each other.
The local Chelli will step in the ring on a five win streak, the last one being the biggest of his career (against the undefeated and very competent Germaine Brown), so his team feels that he is ready to score an important victory that could take his career to the international stage. For his part, Sims will face his third fight in the British Isles, and his biggest challenge since his unexpected defeat against Roamer Angulo (2020), in a position in which he can’t afford to fail if he wants to keep alive his world title aspirations.
Thus, Chelli, a skilled boxer but a bit irregular and less experienced, and Sims, a fighter with much more punch but flaws in his mobility and tactical decisions, should offer an entertaining clash, especially if both fighters are so motivated as they should be for this decisive opportunity.
English championship and British eliminator
In principle, the Chelli-Sims bout will be followed on the undercard by an English middleweight championship between titleholder Tyler Denny 15(0KO)-2(1)-3 and challenger Brad «The Newquay Bomb» Pauls 16(9KO)-0. This matchup will also be a British title eliminator, so the winner will become mandatory challenger for champion Denzel Bentley.
If the fight had taken place around 2019, it might have been viewed very differently, but right now Denny is on a great streak obtained over three unbeaten fighters (Osaze, Wilson-Bent and Rea), while Paul comes from having more work than expected and showing considerable fatigue in his step up against Ryan Kelly.
So while there’s a chance that the experience Pauls gained in his last fight would have helped him evolve, the slick, southpaw and active Denny is the betting favorite, albeit by a narrow margin: Denny is almost always immersed in very close bouts and his lack of punch gives Pauls a chance of success if he uses his power shots in the right way.
Azim and Dubois seek to continue shining
Two of the boxers who will participate in the main fights of the event are the standout prospects Adam “The Assassin” Azim 7(6KO)-0 and “Sweet” Caroline Dubois 5(4KO)-0, who will seek to shine to continue supporting the good prospects that their careers generate. In the case of super lightweight Azim, this BBC Sport ‘Young Fighter of the Year’ award winner excelled in all five of his quick wins in 2022, one of them against Rylan Charlton.
Azim plans to continue his brilliant progress in 2023, and he is overwhelming favorite to defeat the Nicaraguan Santos Reyes 12(3KO)-0, who despite being undefeated has very little punch, has slow legs and scored a controversial victory against Robin Zamora. In other words, it’s unthinkable that he could upset an opponent with excellent distance control and sensational hand speed.
On the other hand, lightweight Dubois was going to face Argentinian Yamila Abellaneda, but it is reported that she will finally face the Tanzanian late substitute Feriche Mashaury 10(3KO)-7(2), a boxer who was beaten in two rounds by both Chantelle Cameron and Terri Harper and that has no chance of victory.
This event will be broadcast in the United Kingdom by Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Arena from 7:00 p.m. on Saturday (2:00 p.m. ET/11:00 a.m. PT).
