El primer combate de 2023 para el peso superpluma estadounidense George “El Yuyu” Acosta 14(2KO)-1 comenzó con un susto en forma de un knockdown. Con todo, Acosta reaccionó inmediatamente para castigar hasta el KOT en el tercer round a su compatriota Marlin “So Icey” Sims 8(4KO)-2(1), que no supo aprovechar su éxito inicial ni lidiar con la acometividad de su oponente.

No obstante, su agresividad y su cadencia fueron demasiado para Sims, que en el final del segundo asalto terminó encerrado y siendo golpeado sin respuesta por ganchos zurdos y directos.
Este fue el principio del fin, ya que Sims no podía o no sabía mantener la distancia, no parecía en óptimas condiciones físicas (se cansó muy rápido) y quizás no tenía la motivación necesaria, así que en el tercer episodio Acosta le hostigó con andanadas de golpes curvos y rectos, arriba y abajo, hasta que, tras un considerable tiempo sin respuesta, el árbitro se decidió a parar el choque.
La actuación de Acosta no fue la más brillante ni la más convincente desde un punto de vista técnico o táctico, pero es importante que los prospectos muestren su dureza física y mental sabiendo manejarse en los momentos de dificultad. Así lo hizo Acosta, que cuando las cosas empezaron mal no se amedrentó y no tardó en darle la vuelta a la situación. En cualquier caso, el boxeador californiano tiene bastantes cosas en las que trabajar antes de un paso adelante importante que le llegará a lo largo de esta temporada.

The first fight of the 2023 season for American super featherweight George “El Yuyu” Acosta 14(2KO)-1 began with a scare in the form of a knockdown. However, Acosta reacted immediately to punish his compatriot Marlin “So Icey” Sims 8(4KO)-2-(1) until scoring a third-round TKO, as the underdog did not know how to take advantage of his initial success or deal with the aggressiveness of his opponent.
With forty seconds elapsed, a straight left hand from the southpaw Sims sat Acosta on the mat. However, the boxer was not hurt and in the restart he offered intense pressure, pinning his opponent against the ropes and hitting him at short range with hooks and uppercuts.
In his eagerness to compensate for the knockdown, «El Yuyu» often rushed in his offensives, advancing frontal desperately seeking to connect power shots, so he received some clear counters. Despite that, his aggressiveness and his punch output were too much for Sims, who at the end of the second round ended up cornered and being hit without answer by left hooks and straight hands.
This was the beginning of the end, since Sims could not or did not know how to keep his distance, he did not seem in optimal physical condition (he got tired very quickly) and perhaps he did not have the necessary motivation. So in the third episode Acosta attacked him with barrages of hooks and straight punches, upstairs and downstairs, until, after a considerable time without Sims throwing shots, the referee stopped the clash.
Acosta’s performance wasn’t the brightest or the most convincing from a technical and tactical point of view, but it’s important for prospects to show their physical and mental toughness in the face of adversity. That is what Acosta did since, despite things started badly, he was not intimidated and it didn’t take long for him to turn the situation around. In any case, the Californian boxer has quite a few things to work on before an important step up that he will surely face throughout this season.
