Luis Nery derrotó por KOT en el penúltimo asalto a duro Azat Hovhannisyan en intensa eliminatoria WBC supergallo

El exmonarca mundial mexicano Luis “Pantera” Nery 34(26KO)-1(1) y el exaspirante mundial armenio Azat “Crazy A” Hovhannisyan 21(17KO)-4(1) no defraudaron, ofreciendo una trepidante batalla repleta de acción. En ella, Nery se equivocó al ceder tanto la iniciativa y pagó el precio en forma de una buena cantidad de golpes recibidos, pero su ventaja en pegada fue el elemento determinante y le permitió hacerse con un KOT en el penúltimo episodio.
Según CompuBox, Hovhannisyan superó a Nery en golpes de poder conectados (180 a 150), en puños al torso (64 a 21) y en golpes totales (210 a 195), lo que demuestra lo errada que fue la estrategia del mexicano y cómo de importante resultó su superior potencia.
En el primer asalto Nery no se mantuvo lejos del centro del ring y tiró de una buena cadencia de golpes para, con algunas intensas combinaciones, superar a un Hovhannisyan expectante, pero en el segundo round el armenio empezó a presionar y alcanzó con sus directos y cruzados a su oponente, que entonces volvió a medir mal sus propias cualidades. El mexicano se vio obligado a realizar una agresiva contraofensiva para contener a su oponente, produciéndose emocionantes intercambios en los que ambos se alcanzaron y en los que Nery pareció estremecido en una ocasión.
El esquema táctico en el que Nery se replegaba demasiado pronto recibía golpes y contestaba con una fuerte ofensiva se repitió vez tras vez, no dándose cuenta “Pantera” de que lograba sus éxitos más sólidos cuando avanzaba y hacía valer su explosividad en intercambios. Por su parte, Hovhannisyan era firme en su trabajo con sus uno-dos y, aunque en ocasiones recibía peligrosas contras, cuando Nery le dejaba espacio y tiempo acababa realizando arremetidas con las que terminaba llegando con claros directos.
En el quinto asalto Hovhannisyan quedó tocado en uno de los numerosos cruces de golpes y el mexicano le hostigó duramente, pero en el siguiente episodio Nery no aprovechó sus éxitos presionando, sino que otra vez recibió golpes boxeando sin iniciativa y tuvo resultados positivos cuando posteriormente detuvo los pies e impuso su superior pegada en intercambios. A pesar de que estaba soportando peor el castigo, “Crazy A” siguió mostrando tremenda tenacidad en sus ataques, lo que forzaba la reacción de Nery y le dio al combate su espectacular cantidad de intercambios.
Pasada la mitad, Hovhannisyan tuvo un considerable número de aciertos ante un Nery que se estancó entonces en su planteamiento sin iniciativa y redujo mucho su volumen de golpes, pero a la larga el armenio fue repetidas veces sacudido por los curvos de su oponente en descarnados intercambios. Así Hovhannisyan se fue desgastando y en el décimo episodio terminó siendo dañado por un cruzado zurdo y derribado por un par de golpes más. La pugna llegó al undécimo episodio, en el que Hovhannisyan volvió a atacar con valentía pero fue estremecido por los curvos zurdos a la contra de Nery y el árbitro paró el duelo.
Incluso después del knockdown, Nery sólo se imponía estrechamente en las cartulinas, que antes del undécimo round eran 95-94, 96-93 y 96-93.
El triunfo en esta eliminatoria convierte a Nery en aspirante obligatorio WBC del peso supergallo, o lo que es lo mismo, le da la oportunidad de alcanzar el mundial ante el ganador del cruce Naoya Inoue vs. Stephen Fulton que en teoría se producirá en mayo o junio.
Triunfos de Mosley Jr. y Sandoval
En el respaldo principal de este evento, evidentemente, todos los abrumadores favoritos vencieron, siendo uno de ellos el estadounidense Shane Mosley Jr. 19(10KO)-4, que derrotó de forma unánime (100-90 y doble 99-91) al mexicano Mario Alberto Lozano 33(24KO)-11(2) en un duelo del peso supermedio y otro el peso mosca estadounidense Ricardo Sandoval 21(16KO)-2, que le asestó la primera derrota antes del límite de su carrera al nicaragüense Jerson Ortiz 17(8KO)-7(1) en el segundo asalto.

Former world champion Luis “Pantera” Nery 34(26KO)-1(1) and former world title challenger Azat “Crazy A” Hovhannisyan 21(17KO)-4(1) did not disappoint, offering a fast-paced battle packed with action. In it, Nery made the mistake to give up the initiative so much and paid the price in the form of a good number of shots received, but his punch advantage was the determining factor and allowed him to get a TKO in the penultimate round.
According to CompuBox, Hovhannisyan surpassed Nery in connected power punches (180 to 150), in body shots (64 to 21) and in total blows (210 to 195), which shows how wrong the Mexican’s strategy was and how important was his superior punching power.
In the first round Nery did not stay far from the center of the ring and used a good punch output to hit an expectant Hovhannisyan with some intense combinations, but in the second round the Armenian began to press and landed straight hands and hooks against his opponent, who then again misjudged his own qualities. The Mexican was forced to throw an aggressive counteroffensive to contain his opponent, so there were exciting exchanges in which both struck each other and in which Nery seemed shaken on one occasion.
The tactical situation in which Nery stepped back too soon, received blows and responded with a strong offensive was repeated time after time, as “Pantera” did not realize that he achieved his most solid successes when he advanced and imposed his explosiveness in exchanges. For his part, Hovhannisyan was firm in his work with his one-two and, although he sometimes was hit by dangerous counters, when Nery gave him space and time he attacked and landed clear straight hands.
In the fifth round, Hovhannisyan was hurt in one of the numerous exchanges and the Mexican punched him hard, but in the next episode Nery did not take advantage of his successes by pressing, but again was hit boxing without initiative and had positive results when he stopped his feet and used his superior punch trading leather. Even though he was dealing worse with the punishment, “Crazy A” continued to show tremendous tenacity in his attacks, forcing Nery’s reaction and giving the match a spectacular number of exchanges.
After the half, Hovhannisyan landed a considerable amount of hands against Nery, who then stalled in his approach without initiative and greatly reduced his work rate, but in the long run the Armenian was repeatedly rocked by his opponent’s hooks in the fierce exchanges. In that way Hovhannisyan was wore down and in the tenth round he ended up getting hurt by a left hook and was dropped by a couple more punches. The fight reached the eleventh round, in which Hovhannisyan bravely attacked again but was staggered by Nery’s counter left hooks and the referee stopped the match.
Even after the knockdown, Nery was only narrowly ahead on the scorecards, which before the eleventh round were 95-94, 96-93 and 96-93.
The victory in this eliminator makes Nery mandatory WBC super bantamweight challenger, or what is the same, gives him the opportunity to fight in a world championship against the winner of the Naoya Inoue vs. Stephen Fulton bout that in theory will take place in May or June.
Wins for Mosley Jr. and Sandoval
In the main support of this event, obviously, all the overwhelming favorites won, one of them being the American Shane Mosley Jr. 19(10KO)-4, who defeated by unanimous decision (100-90 and double 99-91) the Mexican Mario Alberto Lozano 33(24KO)-11(2) in a super middleweight fight, and another the American flyweight Ricardo Sandoval 21(16KO)-2, who dealt the first stoppage defeat of his career to the Nicaraguan Jerson Ortiz 17(8KO)-7(1) in the second round.
