El alemán Eifert dio la sorpresa ante Jean Pascal y ganó eliminatoria para convertirse en retador de Beterbiev

Todo estaba preparado para que el veterano canadiense Jean Pascal 36(20KO)-7(2)-1 lograse capturar la posición de aspirante obligatorio IBF del campeón unificado Artur Beterbiev, siendo considerado favorito para imponerse boxeando como local al alemán Michael Eifert 12(4KO)-1, que mágicamente había aparecido como 3º en el ranking a pesar de carecer totalmente de méritos para tal posición.
Sin embargo, puede que Pascal (que dio positivo por dos sustancias prohibidas en 2021) esta vez no se dopase, puesto que tuvo un rendimiento muy bajo y fue vencido contra pronóstico por el visitante. Las puntuaciones en el triunfo unánime de Eifert fueron 118-110, 117-111 y un demasiado ajustado 115-113.
El combate tuvo básicamente dos tipos de situaciones tácticas. En una de ellas, Eifert avanzaba, lanzaba simples ataques en jab o uno-dos y con ello golpeaba a su oponente en la distancia media larga o encerrándolo en las cuerdas. En estos momentos Pascal se mostró incapaz de contragolpear, y sus reflejos a la hora intentar defenderse de los puños rivales fueron realmente malos.
En el otro tipo de planteamiento táctico, normalmente después de ser golpeado sin respuesta, Pascal intentaba arremeter contra su adversario acortando los espacios y lanzando combinaciones de hooks. Cuando se mostraba más agresivo tenía algo más de efectividad que cuando no portaba la iniciativa, y de hecho fue con algunas esporádicas series de curvos con las que logró llevarse los dos y tres asaltos que dos de los jueces le dieron. Con todo, su lentitud de piernas resultó papable, su avance fue completamente previsible y no fue capaz de generar un punto de inflexión, por lo que a menudo sus ofensivas sólo le llevaron a recibir contragolpes en forma de secos directos, algunos de ellos bastante precisos.
Así, sumando a todo ello que Pascal pareció tener problemas de cansancio persistentes y que Eifert tuvo en general un volumen de trabajo bastante superior, después de los doce asaltos el consenso era que el visitante se había hecho claramente merecedor del triunfo.
Si se comparan las actuaciones de Pascal antes de su doble positivo, o incluso después de su retorno, y la de su combate ante Eifert, es inevitable pensar que quizás el miedo a ser atrapado de nuevo le ha llevado a abandonar las sustancias dopantes. Y es que su pérdida de rendimiento ha resultado tan grande y evidente (encima ante un rival muy por debajo del nivel del top 15) que simplemente parece haber más que el efecto del paso de los años.
En cuanto a Eifert, éste se preparó bien, hizo todo lo que pudo y se anotó lejos de casa la mayor victoria de su carrera, a pesar de que el plan era usarlo como víctima propiciatoria. No obstante, aunque este fue un momento para recordar en su carrera, está claro que hay un mundo entre pelear contra Pascal y medirse al temible Artur Beterbiev, que incluso si se está acercando al retiro sigue siendo un oponente muy peligroso y ante el que no se podría permitir ni la mitad de golpes que recibió la pasada noche.

Everything was prepared for Jean Pascal 36(20KO)-7(2)-1 to become IBF mandatory challenger for unified champion Artur Beterbiev, the Canadian veteran being considered favorite to win fighting at home against German Michael Eifert 12(4KO)-1, who had magically appeared as number 3 in the ranking despite he lacked merits to deserve such high position.
However, it may be that Pascal (who tested positive for two banned substances in 2021) this time did not take PEDs, since he had a very poor performance and was upset by the visitor. The scores in Eifert’s unanimous decision win were 118-110, 117-111 and a too close 115-113.
The fight basically had two types of tactical situations. In one of them, Eifert moved forward, launched simple attacks with jabs or one-twos and hit his opponent at long-middle range or pinning him on the ropes. In these moments Pascal was unable to counterpunch, and his reflexes trying to defend himself were really bad.
In the other type of tactical situations, Pascal, usually after being hit without response, attempted to close the distance and threw hook combinations. When he was more aggressive he was a little more effective than when he did not have the initiative, and in fact it was with some sporadic barrages of hooks that he managed to win the two and three rounds that two of the judges gave him. All in all, his legs were very slow, his attacks were completely predictable and he was not capable of generating a turning point, so often his offensives only led him to receive counterattacks in straight right hand, some of them pretty accurate.
Thus, adding to all this that Pascal seemed to have persistent fatigue issues and that Eifert generally had a much higher punch rate, after the twelve rounds the consensus was that the visitor had clearly deserved the victory.
If someone compares Pascal’s performances before his double positive, or even after his return, and in his fight against Eifert, it is inevitable to think that perhaps the fear of testing positive again has led him to not using doping substances this time. His drop in performance has been so great and evident (on top of that against an opponent well below the level of the top 15) that there seems to be more than the effect of the passing of the years.
As for Eifert, he prepared well, did everything he could and scored the biggest win of his career away from home, even though the plan was to use him as a victim. However, although this was a moment to remember in his career, it is clear that there is a huge difference between fighting Pascal and facing the fearsome Artur Beterbiev, who even if he is nearing retirement is still a very dangerous opponent against he couldn’t afford to take half the blows he took last night.
