Tras el fin de la era GGG, los cintos del peso medio tendrán actividad en los próximos meses (breve estado de la división)

La noticia más importante que ha tenido en el último año la división del peso medio ha sido que el kazajo Gennadiy Golovkin ha renunciado a sus cinturones mundiales WBA e IBF, lo que demuestra claramente la escasa actividad de relieve que ha vivido la categoría recientemente. Y es que, sumándose a la inactividad como titular reinante de Golovkin el semi-retiro de Jermall Charlo, el ascenso de división de Andrade, el nivel de oposición horriblemente bajo de Munguía y una falta de contendientes de relieve palpable, los fans de la división del peso medio han tenido muy poco que celebrar en cerca de doce meses.
Puede que el peso medio no viva un renacimiento pronto, pero al menos en los próximos meses la división tendrá actividad respecto a sus cinturones mundiales, algo que es un paso en la dirección correcta. A continuación hacemos un recorrido por el estado de la categoría de las 160 lb.
Cinturón WBO: El campeón mundial kazajo Janibek Alimkhanuly realizará una defensa voluntaria en Estados Unidos ante el canadiense Steven Butler el día 13 de mayo encabezando un evento de Top Rank. En cuanto a quién será su aspirante obligatorio, la cuestión está en el aire, ya que Golovkin (1º) y Munguía (3º) parecen tener otros planes y Liam Smith (2º) está pendiente de que Chris Eubank Jr. active la cláusula de revancha. El siguiente ranqueado es el cuarto Meirim Nursultanov.
Cinturón IBF: En un principio el brasileño Esquiva Falcao y el australiano Michael Zerafa iban a combatir por el cinto vacante. Con todo, el equipo de Zerafa tuvo un desacuerdo con la IBF, cosa que coincidió con una propuesta al australiano por parte de la WBA. Así, finalmente Falcao está negociando la disputa del mundial con el alemán Vincenzo Gualtieri. El plan es que el choque se produzca en una velada de Top Rank en Estados Unidos. El siguiente clasificado es el alemán Denis Radovan y, si nada cambia, seguramente será el primer aspirante obligatorio del ganador.
Cinturón WBA: Como se ha dicho más arriba, Michael Zerafa recibió la oportunidad de combatir en el mundial WBA del peso medio como aspirante obligatorio de Erislandy Lara. El cubano era titular regular por debajo de Golovkin pero, cuando “GGG” dejó vacante su cinturón mundial, Lara se convirtió en monarca de pleno derecho. La idea es que el duelo Lara-Zerafa tenga lugar en Estados Unidos, en concreto en una velada de PBC. El siguiente ranqueado es el argentino Sergio Martínez.
Cinturón WBC: El campeón mundial estadounidense Jermall Charlo no defiende su cinturón desde junio de 2021, pero el Consejo se niega a desposeerlo, lo que es arbitrario y corrupto. Se rumorea que Charlo podría regresar al ring en el último tercio del año, pero por ahora no hay informaciones demasiado sólidas. De todos modos, el WBC no perderá la oportunidad de seguir ganando dinero, así que ha creado un título interino por el que combatirán el 24 de junio el dominicano Carlos Adames y el estadounidense Julian Williams.

The biggest news the middleweight division has had in the last year has been that Kazakh Gennadiy Golovkin has relinquished his WBA and IBF world belts, which clearly demonstrates how little important activity the division has recently had. Adding to Golovkin’s inactivity as reigning champion the semi-retirement of Jermall Charlo, Andrade’s move up to super middleweight, the horribly low level of opposition faced by Munguía and the lack of high-level contenders, the fans of the middleweight division have had very little to celebrate in close to twelve months.
The weight class may not have a revival any time soon, but at least in the coming months the division will have activity regarding its world belts, which is a step in the right direction. Below we review the status of the 160 lb division.
WBO Belt: Kazakh world champion Janibek Alimkhanuly will make a voluntary defense in the United States against Canadian Steven Butler on May 13, headlining a Top Rank event. As for who will be the mandatory challenger, the question is up in the air, since Golovkin (number 1) and Munguía (number 2) seem to have other plans and Liam Smith (number 2) is waiting for Chris Eubank Jr. to activate the rematch clause. The next ranked fighter is the fourth Meirim Nursultanov.
IBF Belt: Initially, the Brazilian Esquiva Falcao and the Australian Michael Zerafa were going to fight for the vacant belt. However, Zerafa’s team had a disagreement with the IBF, which coincided with a proposal to the Australian by the WBA. Thus, Falcao is finally negotiating the world title bout with German Vincenzo Gualtieri. The plan is for the clash to take place at a Top Rank evening in the United States. The next ranked boxer is the German Denis Radovan and, if nothing changes, he will surely be the winner’s first mandatory challenger.
WBA Belt: As stated above, Michael Zerafa received the opportunity to fight in a WBA world middleweight championship as mandatory challenger for Erislandy Lara. The Cuban was regular title holder below Golovkin, but when «GGG» vacated his world belt, Lara became the full monarch. The idea is for the Lara-Zerafa fight to take place in the United States, specifically on a PBC card. The next ranked is the Argentinian Sergio Martínez.
WBC Belt: American world champion Jermall Charlo has not defended his belt since June 2021, but the WBC refuses to strip him of the title, which is arbitrary and corrupt. It is rumored that Charlo could return to the ring in the last third of the year, but for now there is not very solid information. In any case, the WBC will not lose the opportunity to continue making money, so it has created an interim title for which the Dominican Carlos Adames and the American Julian Williams will fight on June 24.
