El excampeón de la Commonwealth del peso semipesado Lyndon “King” Arthur 22(15KO)-1(1) pretendía anotarse un triunfo sobre el argentino Braian Nahuel Suárez para apoyar sus aspiraciones internacionales (Arthur es actualmente 11º WBO y 12º WBA). Sin embargo, Suárez falló un examen médico previo al combate y la pelea fue cancelada, entrando como sustituto de última hora el peso supermedio británico Boris “Blade” Crighton 10(7KO)-2(1). Este último no tuvo una extraordinaria actuación, pero Arthur ofreció la versión de sus malas noches y a duras penas mereció la victoria.
Aunque un knockdown en el último asalto debió de haber sido la diferencia entre ambos, como así lo reflejó el único juez que puntuó bien el combate y que dio 96-93, los otros dos dieron cartulinas completamente absurdas de 98-92 y 99-91.
Fue una pelea con un ritmo bajísimo, con una muy escasa actividad y bastante tediosa, cosa que inicialmente benefició a un Arthur que pudo usar su superior jab para, con unos poquísimos de estos puños, llevarse los primeros asaltos. Con todo, tras contadas y mayoritariamente erradas ofensivas, Crighton sacó en el tercer round un cruzado diestro que sorprendió a Arthur y le dañó un tanto. El favorito siguió sin aumentar su cadencia, por lo que Crighton, aunque no tuvo tampoco excesivo éxito, en los siguientes asaltos volvió a conectar los puños más significativos con aisladísimos directos diestros.
Con la pugna muy ajustada alcanzada la mitad, en manos de ambos boxeadores estaba incrementar su actividad para intentar establecer un control firme. Pero siguieron empeñados en mantener un duelo táctico en el que a veces unos insuficientes jabs de Arthur le daban los asaltos ante un rival extremadamente dubitativo, y en otras un par de derechas de Crighton (en una por lo demás ineficaz andanada) le valían para superar el trabajo inexistente de su rival.
Finalmente, en el noveno asalto, Arthur recordó que tiene dos manos y no sólo una, conectando un derechazo que dejó algo tocado a Crighton, que fue atacado con nuevos directos diestros posteriormente. Aun así, en los últimos tres minutos no estaba haciendo mucho y Crighton podía llegar al empate en una cartulina ganando el round, si bien en los últimos segundos Arthur se anotó un excelente knockdown con un uno-dos que no le dio el KO (la campana sonó en cuanto el púgil se puso en pie) pero que sí le bastó para certificar que había merecido el triunfo por decisión.
Según afirmó su promotor (Kalle Sauerland) después del duelo, la idea es que Arthur vuelva al ring en el mes de mayo, cuando peleará por el cinturón de un organismo no reconocido (IBO). Teniendo esto en cuenta, seguramente su oponente será básicamente el único que acepte pugnar por un título de tan poco prestigio o uno que la promotora elija a dedo. Así que quizás debamos esperar un contrincante para Arthur que podría ser competente pero por debajo del nivel del top 15 absoluto y ante el que será claro favorito.

Former Commonwealth light heavyweight champion Lyndon «King» Arthur 22(15KO)-1(1) was aiming for a win over Argentinian Braian Nahuel Suárez to support his international aspirations (Arthur is currently ranked as WBO number 11 and WBA number 12). However, Suárez failed a pre-fight medical and the match was canceled, with British super middleweight Boris “Blade” Crighton 10(7KO)-2(1) stepping in as a last-minute substitute. The latter did not have an extraordinary performance, but Arthur offered the version of his bad nights and barely deserved the victory.
Although a knockdown in the last round should have been the difference between the two boxers, something reflected in the card of the only judge who scored the fight well with a 96-93, the other two judges gave completely absurd scorecards of 98-92 and 99-91.
It was a clash with a very low pace, with very little activity and quite tedious, something that initially favored Arthur, who was able to use his superior jab to, with a very few of these shots, win the first rounds. However, after mostly missed attacks, Crighton landed a right overhand in the third round that shocked Arthur and hurt him a bit. After that, the favorite continued without increasing his punch output so, although Crighton was not very successful, in the following rounds the latter again connected the most significant punches with very isolated right hands.
The fight was very close halfway through, so it was up to both fighters to increase their activity to try and establish a firm control. But they remained determined to maintain a tactical duel in which sometimes insufficient jabs from Arthur allowed him to win the rounds against an extremely hesitant opponent, and in others a couple of right hands from Crighton, in an otherwise ineffective barrage, served him to outwork the non-existent activity of the favorite.
Finally, in the ninth round, Arthur remembered that he has two hands and not just one, connecting a straight right that hurt Crighton, who was attacked with new right punches later in the round. Even so, in the last three minutes Arthur was not doing much and Crighton could have reached a draw on a card winning the round, although in the last seconds “King Arthur” scored an excellent knockdown with a one-two that did not give him the KO (the bell rang as soon as the boxer stood up) but it was enough to certify that he had deserved the decision victory.
His promoter (Kalle Sauerland) stated after the bout that Arthur will return to the ring in May, when he will fight for the belt of an unrecognized sanctioning body (IBO). Considering this, surely his opponent will be the only one who accepts to battle for such a low-profile title or one that the promoter handpicks. So perhaps we should expect an opponent for Arthur who might be competent but below the top 15 level and against whom he will be a clear favorite.
