El enfrentamiento entre el canadiense Cody “The Crippler” Crowley 22(9KO)-0 y el estadounidense Abel Ramos 27(21KO)-6(1)-2 prometía ser una guerra, exactamente lo que terminó siendo, ofreciendo ambos un sinfín de cruces de golpes. En este escenario, una vez más, un Crowley infatigable y con un ritmo muy alto volvió a ser superior, si bien, como se podía prever, su desventaja en pegada pesó en su contra. La victoria de Crowley fue por decisión mayoritaria y cartulinas de razonable 116-112 y 115-113 y un demasiado ajustado 114-114.
En el primer round se contuvo un poco, pero desde el segundo el zurdo Crowley presionó con mucha intensidad, manteniendo en las cuerdas constantemente a su adversario y golpeándolo con duros izquierdazos, uppercuts de esta misma mano, ganchos diestros abajo, etc. Aunque Ramos tenía la pegada para intentar hacer pagar a Crowley su agresividad, no tenía una cadencia de golpes suficiente y su precisión era escasa, pareciendo que no sabía desenvolverse bien de espaldas a las cuerdas.
En cualquier caso, no quedándole otra que intentar responder con toda la dureza posible para intentar contener la fuerte presión de su contrincante, Ramos sacó potentes hooks cuando encontró la ocasión, produciéndose duros intercambios que dejaron notar sus efectos en los rostros de ambos púgiles.
La pelea se mantuvo como una intensa batalla round tras round, cosa que continuó beneficiando a Crowley. Y es que, pese a los golpes de poder que conectaba aquí y allá Ramos, la altísima cadencia del canadiense era el factor determinante, especialmente considerando que Crowley, aunque no es muy potente, tenía la destreza para, pese a estar ambos situados cuerpo a cuerpo, lanzar manos con recorrido que estallaban de lleno contra el rostro de su adversario. Así, y llegando Ramos lejos de su mejor momento y tras una inactividad, aunque éste tuvo el mérito de aguantar la dureza del encuentro, por lo general estuvo lejos de igualar el trabajo de su contrincante hasta el undécimo asalto.
En ese episodio Ramos impactó una derecha que hizo que su contrincante se doblase y, según el árbitro, tocase con su guante la lona. Con todo, el knockdown fue posteriormente anulado tras una revisión de la repetición (que tardó demasiado), y Crowley no estaba dañado, así que Ramos no pudo evitar su derrota.
La situación en la división wélter WBC es un completo caos. Keith Thurman (1º) es el retador obligatorio, pero todavía no hay fecha para el mundial entre él y el campeón Spence; Yordenis Ugás (2º) y Mario Barrios (5º) pelearán por un título interino WBC; y ahora Crowley (3º) ha ganado una “eliminatoria titular” ante Ramos (6º)… En fin, ni siquiera Sulaimán entiende este despropósito más allá de que le interesa para sacar todo el dinero posible. De todas formas, lo que sí está claro, es que Crowley, que no pudo contener las lágrimas tras el encuentro, está emplazado a disputar algún gran combate en los próximos doce meses.

In this scenario, an indefatigable fighter with a very high pace as Crowley was once again superior, although, as could be expected, his disadvantage in power weighed against him. Crowley’s victory was by majority decision and two reasonable cards of 116-112 and 115-113 and a too close 114-114.
In the first round he held back a bit, but from the second the southpaw Crowley pressed very intensely, constantly keeping his opponent on the ropes and hitting him with hard lefts, uppercuts from this very hand, right hooks down, etc. Although Ramos had the punch to try to make Crowley pay for his aggressiveness, he did not have a sufficient attack frequency, his precision was poor and it seemed that he did not know how to work well with his back to the ropes.
In any case, having no choice but to try to respond as sharply as possible to try to contain the strong pressure from his opponent, Ramos unleashed powerful hooks when he found the opportunity, producing harsh exchanges that left their effects on the faces of both fighters.
The bout continued to be an intense battle round after round, which continued to favor Crowley. Despite the power shots that Ramos connected here and there, the Canadian’s very high output was the determining factor, especially considering that Crowley, although he is not a puncher, had the skill to throw hands at the closest distance that exploded squarely against the face of his adversary. Thus, and with the underdog entering this fight far from his best moment and after an inactivity, although Ramos had the merit of enduring the harshness of the clash, in general he was far from matching his opponent’s work until the eleventh round.
In that episode, Ramos connected a right hand that made his opponent squat and, according to the referee, touch the canvas with his glove. However, the knockdown was later overturned after a replay review (that took too long), and Crowley was not seriously damaged, so Ramos was unable to prevent his defeat.
The situation in the WBC welterweight division is a complete chaos. Keith Thurman (number 1) is the mandatory challenger, but there is still no date for the world championship bout between him and Spence; Yordenis Ugás (number 2) and Mario Barrios (number 5) will fight for a WBC interim title; and now Crowley (number 3) has won a «title eliminator» against Ramos (number 6)… In short, not even Sulaimán understands this nonsense beyond the fact that he is interested in getting as much money as possible. In any case, what is clear is that Crowley, who could not contain his tears after the bout, is set to face a great fight in the next twelve months.
