Confirmado oficialmente Devin Haney vs. Vasiliy Lomachenko. Declaraciones de los púgiles

Ha tardado más de lo esperado en ser anunciado, pero al fin, a menos de dos meses para su disputa, ha sido confirmado oficialmente por Top Rank que el estadounidense, campeón indiscutido del peso ligero, Devin Haney y el ucraniano, exnúmero 1 libra por libra, Vasiliy Lomachenko se enfrentarán el día 20 de mayo en el MGM Grand de Las Vegas, Estados Unidos.
Este interesante choque será acompañado por tres enfrentamientos: una revancha en el peso superpluma entre el excampeón Óscar Valdez y Adam López, un encuentro del peso ligero entre el prospecto Raymond Muratalla y Jeremia Nakathila (que viene de noquear a Miguel Berchelt) y un campeonato mundial WBO por el vacante cinturón del peso supermosca entre el invicto exmonarca Junto Nakatani y Andrew Moloney.
La pega para los aficionados estadounidenses es que, de nuevo, esta velada será emitida en el país por PPV a un precio de 60 dólares, produciéndose este evento cuatro semanas después de la cartelera Tank-García, otro PPV en este caso a un precio de 85 dólares.
En el anuncio oficial, Haney habló de forma extensa para lo que suele ser habitual en este tipo de notas de prensa:
“Lomachenko es un buen boxeador y un futuro candidato al Salón de la Fama. No le quito ningún mérito a él o a lo que ha hecho en el deporte del boxeo. Aunque no me dio una oportunidad cuando le reté en 2019, no seré mezquino. Esta es la pelea que los fans verdaderamente quieren, y he hecho que sucediese. Me he hecho dos veces mejor desde la revancha con Kambosos, y lo creáis o no, cuanto mejor es mi oponente, mejor rindo. No puedo esperar para este combate. Sé que Lomachenko tiene una inteligencia de ring extremadamente alta, y le enseñaré al mundo el 20 de mayo que soy el mejor boxeador del planeta. Estoy listo para defender mi cinturón indiscutido de manera devastarora”.
Muchísimo más breve fue Lomachenko, que sólo señaló:
“Mi meta es convertirme en el campeón indiscutido del peso ligero, y Devin Haney es el hombre con los cinturones. Respeto su inteligencia de ring y estoy emocionado por este reto”.
Finalmente, el promotor Bob Arum afirmó:
“Devin Haney es la joven superestrella más brillante del deporte, y se enfrenta a un reto tremendo contra uno de los mejores boxeadores libra por libra de esta generación como Vasiliy Lomachenko. En esto consiste el boxeo. Devin y Loma son boxeadores sensacionales, y estoy seguro de que será una pelea memorable”.

It has taken longer than expected to be announced, but at last, less than two months before the date of the fight, it has been officially confirmed by Top Rank that the American, undisputed lightweight champion, Devin Haney and the Ukrainian, former number 1 pound per pound boxer, Vasiliy Lomachenko will meet on May 20 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, United States.
This interesting matchup will be accompanied by three bouts: a super featherweight rematch between former champion Óscar Valdez and Adam López, a lightweight clash between prospect Raymond Muratalla and Jeremia Nakathila (who comes from stopping Miguel Berchelt) and a WBO world championship for the vacant super flyweight belt between undefeated former monarch Junto Nakatani and Andrew Moloney.
The downside for American fans is that, once again, it will be broadcast in the country through a PPV with a price of $60, this event taking place four weeks after the Tank-García card, another PPV in this case at a price of $85.
In the official announcement, Haney talked more than what is usual in this type of press releases:
“Lomachenko is a good fighter and future Hall of Fame candidate. I take nothing away from him or what he has done in the sport of boxing. Although he didn’t give me a shot when I challenged him in 2019, I won’t be petty. This is the fight the fans really want, and I made it happen. I’ve gotten two times better since the Kambosos rematch, and believe it or not, the better my opponent is, the better I perform. I can’t wait for this fight. I know Lomachenko has an extremely high boxing IQ, and I will show the world on May 20 that I’m the best fighter on the planet. I’m ready to defend my undisputed title in devastating fashion.”
For his part, Lomachenko just said:
“My goal is to become the undisputed lightweight champion, and Devin Haney is the man with the belts. I respect his boxing IQ and am excited for this challenge.”
Lastly, promoter Bob Arum stated:
“Devin Haney is the sport’s brightest young superstar, and he’s taking on a tremendous challenge against one of this generation’s best pound-for-pound fighters in Vasiliy Lomachenko. This is what boxing is all about. Devin and Loma are sensational boxers, and I’m sure it will be a memorable fight.”
