Dio la sensación de que si el plata olímpico estadounidense Keyshawn Davis 8(6KO)-0 hubiese querido mostrarse agresivo desde el comienzo habría podido lograr antes el triunfo por detención. Pero un tranquilo despliegue con gradual aumento de intensidad le sirvió para anular, castigar y derrotar por KOT en el noveno asalto al exretador mundial sueco Anthony Yigit 26(20KO)-3(3)-1. Como dato interesante, se puede mencionar que, según CompuBox, Davis tuvo un acierto del 66% en golpes de poder en el sexto round, cifra que es verdaderamente excepcional.
En el inicio Davis se tomó el combate con mucha calma, limitándose en gran parte a estudiar a su contrincante, un Yigit que aprovechó la baja frecuencia de golpes del local para atacarle con algún directo de izquierda y jabs. De todos modos, las ofensivas del zurdo Yigit parecían las de un novato, estando pobremente ejecutadas y no contando con gran potencia o velocidad, así que el estadounidense las pudo bloquear y esquivar con notable facilidad. En el tercer asalto se produjo un choque de cabezas que dejó dolorido a Davis, quien a partir de entonces incrementó su actividad a través de jabs, ganchos zurdos y directos diestros.
Esto hizo que Yigit, una vez más, empezase a dudar demasiado pronto, cediendo terreno, cerrándose mucho y contestando con descontroladas andanadas desesperadas con afán disuasorio. Pero Davis mantuvo sus ataques y en el quinto round creó las primeras dificultades para Yigit, que fue golpeado por una peligrosa combinación de ganchos y uppercuts. En el sexto episodio Yigit hizo lo que pudo, en un último esfuerzo con su izquierda recta, para intentar cambiar la tónica del encuentro, pero los precisos uppercuts y directos del estadounidense le continuaron castigando hasta provocarle una hemorragia nasal.
El visitante intentó mostrar que no estaba amedrentado pidiéndole a su rival que le atacase, pero para el séptimo round hacía poco más que intentar sobrevivir. No lo consiguió, puesto que, aunque Davis se frustró un poco tardando en generar daños y empujó hacia la lona varias veces a su rival, justo al final del octavo asalto impactó un gancho diestro abajo que hizo que Yigit pusiese la rodilla en la lona. Éste se puso en pie, pero en el noveno episodio continuaron las combinaciones de Davis y el árbitro, si bien se precipitó un tanto, consideró que era innecesario dejar seguir a Yigit recibiendo golpes sin posibilidad de ganar y detuvo la pugna.
Dado que en la pelea hubo títulos menores WBC y WBO en juego, Davis continuará mejorando su posicionamiento en las listas y es de suponer que en la segunda mitad del año le veremos en una prueba de fuego ante un rival clasificado. En este sentido, aunque se habla mucho de lo interesante que sería un choque entre Davis y Frank Martin por la competencia indirecta entre Terence Crawford y Errol Spence (quienes apoyan respectivamente a los mencionados púgiles), lo cierto es que no parece que esa pugna se vaya a producir tan pronto si no es que se pacta el enfrentamiento por la corona indiscutida del peso wélter y el Davis-Martin se sitúa en el respaldo.
En cualquier caso, incluso si no se enfrentase a Martin, el peso ligero presenta una gran cantidad de retos interesantes que podrían ayudar a Davis tanto a seguir escalando como a continuar evolucionando y preparándose para su primer mundial.

It seemed that if American Olympic silver medalist Keyshawn Davis 8(6KO)-0 had wanted to be aggressive earlier he would have been able to get the stoppage quite sooner. But a calm deployment with a gradual increase in intensity served him to neutralize, punish and defeat by ninth round TKO the Swedish former world title challenger Anthony Yigit 26(20KO)-3(3)-1. According to CompuBox, Davis had an excellent 66% accuracy on power shots in the sixth round, a figure that is truly exceptional.
In the beginning, Davis fought very calmly, just analyzing his opponent, so Yigit took advantage of the local’s low punch output to attack him with some straight left hands and jabs. Still, the southpaw Yigit’s offensives seemed like those of a rookie, being poorly executed and lacking in power or speed, and the American was able to block and dodge with remarkable ease. In the third round there was a clash of heads that hurt Davis, who from then on increased his activity through jabs, lead hooks and right hands.
This made Yigit, once again, begin to hesitate too soon, giving ground, closing his guard too much and answering with desperate, uncontrolled series of shots in an effort to dissuade his opponent’s attacks. But Davis kept up his pressure and in the fifth round created the first difficulties for Yigit, who was hit by a dangerous combination of hooks and uppercuts. In the sixth episode Yigit did what he could, in a last effort with his straight left hand, to try to change the trend of the match, but the American’s precise uppercuts and straight hands continued to punish him until causing a nosebleed.
The visitor tried to show that he was not intimidated by asking his opponent to attack him, but by the seventh round he was doing little more than trying to survive, and he didn’t achieve that objective either. Although Davis got a little frustrated for not generating the damage he wanted and pushed his opponent to the canvas several times, right at the end of the eighth round he landed a right hook downstairs that made Yigit put a knee on the canvas. He got to his feet, but in the ninth round Davis’s combinations continued and the referee, although he was somewhat hasty, considered it unnecessary to let Yigit continue receiving blows without a chance of winning and stopped the fight.
Given that there were minor WBC and WBO titles at stake in the fight, Davis will continue to improve his position on the lists and presumably in the second half of the year we will see him in a decisive test against a ranked opponent. In this sense, although there is much talk about how interesting a clash between Davis and Frank Martin would be as a part of the indirect competition between Terence Crawford and Errol Spence (who respectively support the aforementioned fighters), the truth is that it does not seem that this bout will will take place so early in their careers. Actually, the only chance of it happening in the near future is if Crawford and Spence agree a clash for the the undisputed welterweight crown and the Davis-Martin fight is chosen as a part of the support.
In any case, even if he does not face Martin, the lightweight division offers a lot of interesting challenges that could help Davis continue to climb, evolve and prepare for his first world championship fight.
