Tervel Pulev regresó a la senda del triunfo derribando y venciendo a Joel Shojgreen

Cerca de un año después de que Sergey Kovalev le derrotase en su primer test serio como boxeador profesional, el bronce olímpico búlgaro Tervel Pulev 17(14KO)-1, hermano del exretador mundial del peso pesado Kubrat Pulev, retornó al ring en el que se esperaba un sencillo combate ante el estadounidense Joel Shojgreen 14(13KO)-5(4). Efectivamente, así fue, puesto que Shojgreen, que tenía varias rápidas derrotas, a penas ofreció resistencia antes de abandonar en el tercer round.
Pulev volvió a mostrar un ritmo excesivamente bajo, limitándose a tirar algunos jabs antes de eventualmente lanzarse encima con una ofensiva errada: su directos diestros eran esquivados por un Shojgreen que se agachaba, y al cual entonces Pulev empujaba hacia abajo, y en una ocasión incluso golpeó en la nuca. La pugna no tuvo nada relevante hasta que en el segundo asalto un uppercut diestro fallado por Pulev (le golpeó con el bíceps) y un débil gancho zurdo dejaron tocado al estadounidense.
Éste alcanzó el tercer asalto, en el que fue golpeado por algún jab y dos-uno, contestando simplemente con alguna tenue combinación pretendidamente disuasoria y jabs. Pero poco después Shojgreen intentó tomar la iniciativa y recibió una derecha a la contra que le hizo tocar la lona. En la reanudación Pulev lanzó algunos hooks sin respuesta antes de llegarse a la campana del final de round, decidiendo Shojgreen no salir al siguiente.
Como debutó muy tarde como profesional y avanzó lento, tardando seis años en disputar un combate relevante, Pulev no está para nada en una situación buena. Y es que, más allá de que la mayoría de boxeadores se retiran con menos años de los que él tiene ya, su boxeo simplemente es demasiado tibio, falto de actividad e impreciso como para poder imaginarle venciendo a un peso crucero de la parte alta. Aunque sí es viable que algún boxeador con aspiraciones mundiales le dé una oportunidad y le use como escalón para intentar llegar a una pelea mayor.

About a year after Sergey Kovalev beat him in his first important test as a professional boxer, Bulgarian Olympic bronze medalist Tervel Pulev 17(14KO)-1, brother of former world heavyweight challenger Kubrat Pulev, returned to the ring in a fight which was expected to be quite easy against American Joel Shojgreen 14(13KO)-5(4). Indeed, it was not hard at all, as Shojgreen, who had several quick defeats, offered little resistance before quitting in the third round.
Pulev again had an excessively low pace, just throwing a few jabs before eventually charging with an inaccurate offensive: his right hands were ducked by Shojgreen, and then Pulev pushed him down, and on one occasion even hit him in the back of the head. The fight had nothing relevant until in the second round a right uppercut missed by Pulev (he hit him with the biceps) and a weak left hook hurt the American.
The American boxer reached the third round, in which he was hit by some jabs and a two-one, simply answering with some weak dissuasive combinations and jabs. However, soon after, Shojgreen tried to take the initiative and received a counter right hand that brought him to the canvas. In the restart Pulev launched some hooks, but the bell prevented him from continuing his attack, although this was enough, as Shojgreen refused to continue before the fourth round.
Given that he debuted very late as a professional and progressed slowly, taking six years to face a relevant fight, Pulev is not in a good situation at all. Beyond the fact that most fighters retire younger than he is now, his boxing is simply too tepid, too inactive and imprecise to be able to imagine him beating a high-level cruiserweight. Nevertheless, it is possible that a boxer with world title aspirations could give him an opportunity and use him as a stepping stone to try and reach a bigger fight.
