Después de sólo seis peleas como profesional, el prospecto dominicano del peso mosca Franklyn de Paula 7(6KO)-0 afrontó un importante paso adelante enfrentándose a un boxeador experimentado como el venezolano Gilbert González 18(13KO)-5(3)-1 que sólo había sido derrotado por el pegador Ricardo Sandoval, el duro y correoso “Habanerito” López, el campeón mundial Daniel Valladares y el prospecto invicto Tobías Reyes. Así, De Paula no pudo mantener su 100% de knockouts, si bien mostró su potencial logrando una amplísima victoria unánime (100-90, 99-91, 99-91).
En el inicio De Paula desplegó una presión metódica sobre el zurdo González, avanzando sin descuidarse en defensa a la vez que iba midiendo su directo diestro y su jab. González por su parte se desplazó por el ring y eventualmente realizó una arremetida, si bien estas fueron por lo general escasamente eficaces. Además, en el segundo round el dominicano encontró la manera de acortar los espacios y trabajar con duros curvos que su oponente pareció sentir. Por ello, viendo que por esta vía no iba bien, el visitante intentó avanzar desde el tercer asalto, pero en el cuarto De Paula le alcanzó con precisos directos diestros que amenazaron con ponerle en apuros.
El venezolano no fue al combate a tirarse a la lona, sino que, pese a los golpes recibidos, trató de seguir avanzando, pero De Paula controló bien los espacios, eludió muchísimos ataques rivales, usó el jab y buscó contragolpes variando alturas, aprovechando un descuido de González en el quinto round para alcanzarlo con varios hooks en corta. De todos modos, De Paula pareció asumir que no iba a lograr la detención (o quizás prefirió centrarse en intentar sumar rounds de trabajo), por lo que en la segunda mitad se mostró bastante comedido al ataque, incluso cuando lograba llegar con nítidos golpes de poder, si bien su superioridad siguió siendo muy clara y se hizo evidente merecedor del triunfo.
De Paula parece tener el potencial para alcanzar combates importantes en la división del peso mosca, aunque evidentemente, como con todo prospecto, hay que tener cierta cautela antes de hacer proyecciones, especialmente hasta que no se le vea en situaciones tácticas variadas. Aun así, tiene buena técnica, astucia y reflejos y está avanzando a muy buen ritmo, por lo que parece un nombre al que prestar atención entre las jóvenes promesas de la categoría.
En este evento también sumaron triunfos el prospecto del peso superwélter Ángel Cruz Johnson 10(9KO)-0, que volvió a vencer en el tercer round por segunda vez consecutiva a Ángel Yomar Mateo 22(18KO)-5(3), y el invicto peso supergallo Orlando Pérez 13(9KO)-0, que superó a Leonard Sánchez 7(3KO)-1 por decisión unánime y tarjetas de 100-90, 98-92, 98-92.

After only six fights as a professional, Dominican flyweight prospect Franklyn de Paula 7(6KO)-0 faced an important step up facing an experienced boxer like Venezuelan Gilbert González 18(13KO)-5(3)-1, who had only been defeated by the puncher Ricardo Sandoval, the strong and unorthodox «Habanerito» López, the world champion Daniel Valladares and the undefeated prospect Tobías Reyes. Thus, De Paula could not maintain his 100% knockout ratio, although he showed his potential by achieving a very wide unanimous decision victory (100-90, 99-91, 99-91).
Early on De Paula put methodical pressure on the southpaw González, moving forward paying attention to defense as he measured his opponent with his straight right hand and his jab. González for his part moved around the ring and eventually lunged, although these attacks were generally ineffective. In addition, in the second round the Dominican found the way to close the spaces and work with hard hooks that hurt his opponent a bit. For this reason, seeing that things were not going well for him, the visitor tried to pressure from the third round, but in the fourth De Paula hit him with precise straight rights that threatened to put him in trouble.
The Venezuelan did not came to the ring to take a dive and, despite the blows received, he tried to continue moving forward, but De Paula controlled distance well, dodged many punches, used his jab and looked for counters changing levels, taking advantage of an oversight by González in the fifth round to land several hooks at short range. In any case, De Paula seemed to assume he wasn’t going to get the stoppage (or perhaps he preferred to focus on trying to get rounds of experience), so in the second half he was pretty restrained on offense, even when he managed to land clean power punches, although his superiority remained evident.
De Paula looks to have the potential to reach big fights in the flyweight division, although, as with any prospect, projections must be prudent, especially until he faces more variety of tactical situations. Still, he has good technique, cunning and reflexes and is progressing at a very good pace, so he seems like a name to watch out for among the young up-and-comers in the weight class.
In this event, super welterweight prospect Ángel Cruz Johnson 10(9KO)-0 defeated Ángel Yomar Mateo 22(18KO)-5(3) in the third round for the second time in a row, and undefeated super bantamweight Orlando Pérez 13(9KO)-0 beat Leonard Sánchez 7(3KO)-1 by unanimous decision and scores of 100-90, 98-92, 98-92.
