Después de que el mexicano Mauricio “Bronco” Lara 26(19KO)-3(1)-1 mostrase una completa falta de profesionalidad excediéndose mucho en el pesaje y perdiendo su cinturón en la báscula, lo menos que podía hacer era darlo todo para intentar ganar y ofrecer un espectáculo acorde a lo esperado. Sin embargo, Lara tuvo una muy mala actuación, con una pésima selección estratégica, ante el británico Leigh “Leigh-thal” Wood 26(16KO)-3(2), así que el choque, que se esperaba muy emocionante, terminó siendo decepcionantemente aburrido.
Además, el mexicano fue derribado en una ocasión y fue controlado casi de principio a fin sin a penas ofrecer resistencia consistente. De hecho, la actuación de Lara fue tan sumamente extraña, sobre todo teniendo en cuenta lo agresivo y activo que suele ser, que hubo aficionados que, enfadados por el espectáculo que acababan de ver, incluso señalaron que el combate parecía amañado. Las puntuaciones del triunfo de Wood fueron de doble 118-109 y un 116-111 ridículamente generoso con Lara.
Lara mostró enormes dudas a la hora de atacar, permaneciendo prolongadamente en la distancia larga antes de decidirse a arrojar una ofensiva normalmente muy tosca e imprecisa. En alguna ocasión Lara llegó con un gancho zurdo potente, pero en general Wood tuvo mucho margen para dar recorrido a sus directos y aprovechar su técnica y precisión. Tanto fue así que en el segundo round un uppercut diestro acompañado de un ligero empujón arrojó al visitante al tapiz.
Esto debería haber hecho despertar a Lara, pero éste no cambió su planteamiento táctico, sino que siguió cediendo la iniciativa y retrocediendo ante Wood, quien pudo ir llegando cómodamente con su jab, directos diestros y algún uppercut para ir agrandando cada vez más su ventaja en las puntuaciones. Lara estaba perdiendo asaltos constantemente y estaba sufriendo dificultades tácticas de forma completamente absurda, y lo que es peor, normalmente sin plantar más batalla que insuficientes ganchos.
“Bronco” necesitaba un cambio con urgencia para evitar la derrota, pero su reacción nunca llegó. Al contrario, a menudo permaneció estático en las cuerdas mientras recibía uno-dos, combinaciones uppercut-gancho o uppercuts diestros tras los que Wood daba un paso atrás. De todos modos, el ritmo del británico tampoco fue muy elevado, sino muy tranquilo, dado que quería evitar riesgos y con lo que estaba ofreciendo le sobraba para ganar la pelea. Así que el público abucheó un combate monótono y con una gran falta de acción, especialmente teniendo en cuenta que uno de los dos contendientes se dedicó a caminar hasta el final y ni si quiera pareció tener la motivación para intentar vencer.
Sea por un motivo u otro, estuviese desmoralizado por haber perdido el título en la báscula, tuviese problemas físicos o anímicos o su equipo le hubiese preparado inadecuadamente en todos los aspectos, el hecho es que Lara ha dinamitado su prestigio con esta actuación nefasta, que resulta además un mal presagio de cara a una futura andadura en el peso superpluma.
Por otro lado, Wood recuperó su cinturón y volverá a abordar los planes que tenía Matchroom Boxing para él antes de la derrota ante Lara. Con todo, aunque fue un triunfo muy dominador ante un oponente peligroso, y en el que el nuevo monarca cumplió muy bien con su misión, es difícil medir hasta qué punto se ha recuperado Wood de su dura derrota en el primer encuentro teniendo en cuenta que su oponente ni mucho menos le llevó a aguas profundas y disminuyó su cadencia hasta más de la mitad de lo que es habitual en él.

After Mexican Mauricio “Bronco” Lara 26(19KO)-3(1)-1 demonstrated a complete lack of professionalism with his weight and lost his belt on the scale, the least he could do was give his all to try to win and put on a show according to expectations. However, Lara had a very bad performance, with a terrible strategic choice, against British Leigh «Leigh-thal» Wood 26(16KO)-3(2), so the clash, which was expected to be very exciting, ended up being disappointingly boring.
In addition, the Mexican was knocked down once and was dominated almost from start to finish without putting up consistent resistance. In fact, Lara’s performance was so utterly weird, especially considering how aggressive and active he often is, that some fans, angry for what they had just seen, even said that the match seemed rigged. The scores for Wood’s win were 118-109, 118-109 and a 116-111 ridiculously generous with Lara.
Lara displayed enormous hesitancy when it came to attacking, staying at long range for a long time before deciding to launch a normally very crude and inaccurate offensive. On occasions Lara connected a powerful left hook, but in general Wood had a lot of room to throw his straight hands and take advantage of his technique and precision. So much so that in the second round a right uppercut, accompanied by a slight push, dropped the visitor.
This should have woken up Lara, but he did not change his tactical approach, instead he continued to give up the initiative and back down against Wood, who comfortably landed his jab, right hands and some uppercuts to further increase his lead in the scorecards. Lara was constantly losing rounds and suffering tactical difficulties in a completely absurd way, and even worse, usually offering no more resistance than insufficient hooks.
«Bronco» urgently needed an adjustment to avoid defeat, but his reaction never came. Instead, he often remained static on the ropes while receiving one-twos, uppercut-hook combinations or right uppercuts after which Wood stepped back. In any case, the British’s pace was not very high either, but very calm, since he wanted to avoid risks and with the boxing he was displaying he had more than enough to win the bout. So the crowd booed a monotonous fight with a great lack of action, especially considering that one of the two contenders just walked the ring till the end and did not even seem to have the motivation to try to win.
Letting aside whether he was demoralized for having lost the title on the scale, whether his team had inadequately prepared him in all aspects or he had physical or emotional problems, the fact is that Lara has dynamited his prestige with this awful performance, which is also a bad precedent for a future run at super featherweight.
On the other hand, Wood recovered his belt and returned to the path that Matchroom Boxing had designed for him before the loss to Lara. All in all, although it was a very dominating win against a dangerous opponent, and the new champion fulfilled his mission very well, it is difficult to gauge how much Wood has recovered from his hard defeat in the first bout considering that his opponent did not take him into deep waters at all and decreased his work rate to more than half what is usual for him.
