El peso supermosca mexicano Christian Bacasegua 21(8KO)-4(1)-2 logró evitar la derrota ante Erick “Habanerito” López 16(10KO)-9(1)-2, aunque tuvo un exigente combate en el que sólo pudo vencer por decisión mayoritaria. De todos modos, López es un oponente muy duro y correoso ante el que rivales de nivel alto han padecido notablemente, por lo que no se debe infravalorar el hecho de que Bacasegua pasase el test, aunque fuese de manera ajustada, menos aún sirviéndole esto para conservar su posición en el ranking WBO y dar un paso más para acercarse a una pelea de gran calado.
Por otro lado, el viernes tuvo estos otros resultados:
-El peso semipesado argentino Durval “El Bombardero” Palacio 19(9KO)-2(1) se anotó una de las dos mayores victorias de su carrera noqueando en el octavo asalto al invicto brasileño Matheus Da Silva 8(3KO)-1(1), si bien le espera un arduo camino en una categoría tan complicada.
-El peso superwélter danés Oliver Meng 11(3KO)-0 logró una muy trabajada victoria por decisión mayoritaria (las cartulinas fueron muy dispares: 114-114, 116-112 y 118-111) en un igualado duelo contra Khalil El Harraz 15(1KO)-4-1. La actuación de Meng no fue extraordinaria, pero teniendo en cuenta su edad, número de peleas y que este fue su primer choque a doce asaltos, no fue un mal resultado.
-El prospecto cubano del peso superligero Kevin Hayler Brown 3(2KO)-0 alcanzó por primera vez una decisión de los jueces ante el estadounidense Julian Smith 6(4KO)-2, al que superó de forma unánime (96-94, 96-94 y 98-92), y el peso pesado Lorenzo Medina 7(6KO)-0 derrotó por decisión unánime (triple 58-56) al sustituto Ángel Nápoles 1(1)-1.
Sábado 27 de mayo
El campeón mundial IBF del peso pluma Luis Alberto López por tercera vez viajó a Reino Unido y por tercera vez logró un gran triunfo. Si cabe, este último fue aún mayor, ya que sólo necesitó cinco asaltos para acabar con un Michael Conlan que parece haber perdido mucha confianza y encaje desde su derrota ante Leigh Wood. En cuanto al respaldo, Nick Ball y Pierce O’Leary se anotaron contundentes triunfos antes del límite y Anthony Cacace venció por clara decisión unánime. Crónica de los combates siguiendo el link.
Respecto al arriba citado Leigh Wood, éste recuperó el cinturón mundial WBA del peso pluma en la revancha contra un desmotivado, ofensivamente inactivo y tibio Mauricio Lara, que fue derribado y controlado. Crónica del combate siguiendo el link.
Antes del Lara-Wood II, el exretador mundial del peso superligero Jack “El Gato” Catterall 27(13KO)-1 puso fin a su inactividad derribando dos veces y venciendo por muy clara decisión unánime (99-89, 99-88 y 97-90) al irlandés Darragh Foley 22(10KO)-5-1, quedando a la espera de que se le pacte un choque ante un oponente de nivel alto en la segunda mitad del año; la monarca mundial WBA del peso superwélter Terri Harper 14(6KO)-1(1)-1 tuvo más trabajo del esperado para vencer por decisión unánime (97-93, 97-93 y 98-92) a Ivana Habazin 21(7KO)-5(1), pareciendo que en un futuro choque ante una rival de élite podría volver a tener críticas dificultades; y Danny Ball 13(6KO)-1(1)-1 cumplió con lo esperado venciendo por abandono en el octavo asalto a Jamie “Ginger Rocket” Robinson 15(4KO)-6(1)-2 y coronándose campeón inglés del peso wélter
Respecto al campeonato mundial WBO del peso crucero, en esta ocasión los agarres de Lawrence Okolie no pudieron frenar el tesón de Chris Billam-Smith, que ante su público se anotó tres knockdowns y venció por decisión mayoritaria, siendo la cartulina de 112-112 otro espantoso ejemplo más de corrupción. Pasando a la cartelera de Golden Boy Promotions, como se esperaba, el peso wélter Alexis “Lex” Rocha 23(15KO)-1 venció en el quinto round a Anthony Young 24(8KO)-3(2), por lo que mantuvo su posición como número 1 WBO y ahora sólo le queda aguardar a que Spence y Crawford se midan para volver a solicitar al organismo que le deje acceder a la pelea mundialista (algo que la primera vez fue rechazado por la WBO).
En el undercard, el peso mínimo Óscar Collazo 7(5KO)-0 se convirtió en campeón mundial WBO destronando por abandono en el séptimo asalto al peligroso Melvin Jerusalem 20(12KO)-3(1), gran victoria que le asienta definitivamente en la élite de la división; el peso supermosca John “Scrappy” Ramírez 12(8KO)-0 se anotó un controvertido triunfo por decisión dividida (96-94, 96-94, 96-94) ante Fernando “Leoncito” Díaz 12(4KO)-4-1 con el que generó muchas dudas; y el peso ligero Óscar Duarte 26(21KO)-0 continuó su racha de victorias antes del límite derribando dos veces a D’Angelo Keys 17(11KO)-3(2) antes de obligarle a abandonar en el séptimo round.
Finalmente, la velada sudafricana sufrió grandes cambios, y el jovencísimo peso supermosca Phumelele Cafu 8(7KO)-0-3 no se midió al mexicano Rosendo Hugo Guarneros, sino a su compatriota Jackson Chauke 22(15KO)-2-2. En esta revancha (el primer combate terminó en empate), Cafu venció por decisión dividida, por lo que quizás mejore algo su posicionamiento como 8º IBF y 10º WBA, aunque no cambiará la impresión de que necesita más experiencia antes de intentar pelear en la cumbre mundial.
El sábado tuvo estos otros resultados:
-El prospecto ruso del peso supermedio Nikita Zon 7(5KO)-0-1 se anotó una importantísima victoria por KOT en el quinto round sobre el fuerte y enrachado Artysh Lopsan 10(7KO)-2(2)-1, con lo que hizo toda una declaración de intenciones.
-El campeón de Sudamérica del peso supermosca, el argentino Tobías “El Pitbull” Reyes 12(11KO)-0, logró su décimo triunfo antes del límite consecutivo venciendo por KO en el noveno round al venezolano Luis Guerrero 8(7KO)-7(3)-2.
-El peso supermedio Ryan Young 15(11KO)-5(1) fue vencido por amplia decisión unánime (100-90, 99-91 y 98-92) por Shakeel Phinn 25(16KO)-3-1, que tiene que darse prisa para intentar alcanzar una pelea importante.
-El excampeón Wisaksil Wangek 52(44KO)-6(3)-1 sumó su segundo triunfo desde su derrota ante “Bam” Rodríguez venciendo a Komgrich Nantapech 31(22KO)-7(2) por decisión unánime (79-73, 79-73, 78-74).
-La neozelandesa Lani Daniels 8(0KO)-2-2 se proclamó campeona mundial IBF del peso pesado con un triunfo unánime (99-91, 98-92, 98-92) sobre Alrie Meleisea 6(0KO)-2-1.

Respecto a los resultados del domingo, la exmonarca mundial belga Delfine Persoon 48(19KO)-3(1) se afianzó como retadora obligatoria de Alycia Baumgardner derrotando a la surcoreana Bo Mi Re Shin 15(8KO)-2-3 por decisión dividida (98-92, 97-93, 94-96) y el peso supermedio Kevin Lele Sadjo 20(18KO)-0 dio una nueva muestra de su pegada convirtiéndose en el primero en vencer antes del límite a Sven Elbir 19(14KO)-2(1) con un KOT en el séptimo round, y parece cuestión de tiempo hasta que alcance una pugna importante en la división.

Mexican super flyweight Christian Bacasegua 21(8KO)-4(1)-2 managed to avoid defeat against Erick «Habanerito» López 16(10KO)-9(1)-2, although he had a hard fight in which he only won by majority decision. In any case, López is a very tough and experienced opponent against whom high-level boxers have had to dig very deep, so the fact that Bacasegua passed the test should not be underestimated, even if it was by close margin, specially considering that the victory will serve him to keep his position in the WBO ranking and take one more step to get closer to a fight of great importance.
Friday had these other results:
-Argentine light heavyweight Durval “El Bombardero” Palacio 19(9KO)-2(1) scored one of the two biggest victories of his career by knocking out undefeated Brazilian Matheus Da Silva 8(3KO)-1(1) in the eighth round, although an arduous road awaits him in such a complicated division.
-Danish super welterweight Oliver Meng 11(3KO)-0 scored a hard-fought victory by majority decision (the cards were very different: 114-114, 116-112 and 118-111) in an even bout against Khalil El Harraz 15( 1KO)-4-1. Meng’s performance wasn’t extraordinary, but considering his age, number of fights and that this was his first twelve-rounder, it wasn’t a bad result.
-Cuban super lightweight prospect Kevin Hayler Brown 3(2KO)-0 reached a decision for the first time against American Julian Smith 6(4KO)-2, whom he beat by unanimous decision (96-94, 96- 94 and 98-92), and heavyweight Lorenzo Medina 7(6KO)-0 defeated substitute Ángel Nápoles 1(1)-1 by unanimous decision (triple 58-56).

IBF world featherweight champion Luis Alberto López traveled to the United Kingdom for the third time and, for the third time, he achieved a great victory. This one maybe was even bigger, since he only needed five rounds to knock out Michael Conlan, who seems to have lost a lot of confidence and punch resistance since his loss against Leigh Wood. Regarding the aforementioned Leigh Wood, he regained the WBA world featherweight belt in a rematch against an unmotivated, offensively inactive and tepid Mauricio Lara, who was knocked down and dominated. Read more following the link.
Before the Lara-Wood II fight, former world super lightweight challenger Jack «El Gato» Catterall 27(13KO)-1 ended his inactivity knocking down twice and winning by very clear unanimous decision (99-89, 99-88 and 97 -90) a bout against Irish Darragh Foley 22(10KO)-5-1, so now he awaits a clash against a high-level opponent in the second half of the year; WBA world super welterweight champion Terri Harper 14(6KO)-1(1)-1 had more work than expected to defeat Ivana Habazin 21(7KO) by unanimous decision (97-93, 97-93 and 98-92)-5(1), and it seems that in a future clash against an elite boxer she could once again have critical difficulties; and Danny Ball 13(6KO)-1(1)-1, as expected, defeated Jamie “Ginger Rocket” Robinson 15(4KO)-6(1)-2 by eighth round corner stoppage and became English welterweight champion.
Regarding the WBO world cruiserweight championship, on this occasion Lawrence Okolie’s cliches could not stop the tenacity of Chris Billam-Smith, who, in front of his fans, scored three knockdowns and won by majority decision. Moving on to the Golden Boy Promotions event, welterweight Alexis “Lex” Rocha 23(15KO)-1 defeated Anthony Young 24(8KO)-3(2) in the fifth round, thus maintaining his position as WBO number 1. Now Rocha needs to wait for Spence and Crawford to meet to ask the organization again for a world title opportunity (the first time his petition was rejected by the WBO).
On the undercard, minimumweight Óscar Collazo 7(5KO)-0 became WBO world champion dethroning the dangerous Melvin Jerusalem 20(12KO)-3(1) with a seventh-round stoppage, great victory that definitively settles him in the division elite; super flyweight John “Scrappy” Ramírez 12(8KO)-0 scored a controversial split decision victory (96-94, 96-94, 96-94) over Fernando “Leoncito” Díaz 12(4KO)-4-1, generating many doubts; and lightweight Óscar Duarte 26(21KO)-0 continued his streak of stoppage wins knocking down twice D’Angelo Keys 17(11KO)-3(2) before beating him in the seventh round.
Finally, the South African evening had many changes, and the very young super flyweight Phumelele Cafu 8(7KO)-0-3 did not face Mexican Rosendo Hugo Guaneros, but his compatriot Jackson Chauke 22(15KO)-2-2. In this rematch (the first bout ended in a draw), Cafu won via split decision, result that perhaps will improve his position as IBF No. 8 and WBA No. 10 somewhat. However, this win will not change the impression that he needs more experience before trying to fight at world level.

-Russian super middleweight prospect Nikita Zon 7(5KO)-0-1 scored a great fifth-round TKO victory over the strong and dangerous Artysh Lopsan 10(7KO)-2(2)-1, who was on a good streak, so he made quite a statement.
-South American super flyweight champion, Argentine Tobías “El Pitbull” Reyes 12(11KO)-0, achieved his tenth consecutive stoppage victory defeating Venezuelan Luis Guerrero 8(7KO)-7(3)-2 by ninth-round KO.
-Super middleweight Ryan Young 15(11KO)-5(1) was defeated by wide unanimous decision (100-90, 99-91 and 98-92) by Shakeel Phinn 25(16KO)-3-1. Phinn needs to hurry to try and reach an important fight.
-Former champion Wisaksil Wangek 52(44KO)-6(3)-1 scored his second win since his loss against «Bam» Rodríguez defeating Komgrich Nantapech 31(22KO)-7(2) by unanimous decision (79-73 , 79-73, 78-74).
-New Zealand’s Lani Daniels 8(0KO)-2-2 became IBF world heavyweight champion with a unanimous decision victory (99-91, 98-92, 98-92) over Alrie Meleisea 6(0KO)-2-1.

Regarding the results of Sunday, former world champion Delfine Persoon 48(19KO)-3(1) established herself as Alycia Baumgardner’s mandatory challenger defeating South Korean Bo Mi Re Shin 15(8KO)-2-3 by split decision (98-92, 97-93, 94-96). On the other hand, super middleweight Kevin Lele Sadjo 20(18KO)-0 showed again his punching power becoming the first to stop Sven Elbir 19(14KO)-2(1) with a seventh-round TKO, and it seems like a matter of time until he reaches a major fight in the division.
