Se suponía que este sábado el insigne prospecto estadounidense del peso pesado Jared Anderson 14(14KO)-0 iba a afrontar un interesante test ante el kazajo Zhan Kossobutskiy, combate en el que dos invictos clasificados mundiales iban a mostrar de qué estaban hechos a la vez que buscaban hacer una declaración de intenciones y escalar hasta lo más alto de las listas. Sin embargo, como tantísimas otras veces en decisivos combates entre imbatidos, con las entradas vendidas para que el público viese combatir en casa al ídolo de Toledo (Estados Unidos), el encuentro se canceló 11 días antes de la fecha de la pugna, en esta ocasión por supuestos problemas de visado de Kossobutskiy.
Esto hizo que entrase como sustituto tardío el estadounidense Charles Martin 29(26KO)-3(2)-1. Dadas las circunstancias, y si de verdad esta cancelación no estaba planeada desde el inicio por Top Rank, el remplazo no es malo del todo para la cantidad de días que había para buscarlo. Además, Martin es un boxeador conocido por el público, que se ha medido a rivales como AJ o Luis Ortiz y que llegó a ser campeón mundial (aunque por un golpe de suerte puntual).
Con todo, Anderson es clarísimo favorito para vencer. Más allá de que Martin lleva diez meses inactivo, de que ha perdido sus tres mayores peleas (una de ellas ante el limitadísimo Adam Kownacki), de que fue noqueado por Joshua y un veteranísimo Ortiz, de que es 14 años mayor y de que ha tenido muy poco tiempo de preparación, Anderson parece estar en un nivel completamente diferente en cuanto a estado de forma, agilidad, pegada, velocidad y motivación.
El hecho de que Anderson a veces se sobreconfíe mucho y de que milite en el peso pesado, hace que en las apuestas la diferencia no sea tan enorme como se podría esperar. No obstante, esto no debe llevar a equívocos: si todo va como se espera y Anderson no comete errores mayúsculos, debería poder utilizar su gran capacidad de desborde, sus rápidas combinaciones y su explosividad para demoler a Martin.
Makhmudov vs. Akpejiori
El combate de semifondo será también en la división del peso pesado, puesto que el invicto prospecto ruso Arslanbek Makhmudov 16(15KO)-0 afrontará el primer combate de su carrera ante un invicto enfrentándose al nigeriano Raphael Akpejiori 15(14KO)-0. A pesar de que en su actuación ante Carlos Takam, al que derribó dos veces, no convenció a muchos (Takam posteriormente vapuleó a Tony Yoka), Makhmudov es 5º WBC y WBA y se le considera una de las promesas más relevantes de la categoría máxima, hablándose de que podría cerrar el año disputando una pelea muy importante.
Con todo, antes de ella, en su debut estadounidense tendrá que demostrar que es capaz de lidiar satisfactoriamente con un Akpejiori con el mismo porcentaje de knockouts, incluso más alto que él y con un peso similar, pero sin su experiencia de calidad profesional o su proyección.
Estos dos combates serán televisados en Estados Unidos por ESPN, ESPN Deportes y ESPN+ el sábado desde las 22:00 ET/19:00 PT, las 4:00 de la madrugada en hora peninsular española.

Initially, standout American heavyweight prospect Jared Anderson 14(14KO)-0 was supposed to face this Saturday an interesting test against Kazakh Zhan Kossobutskiy, a fight in which two undefeated world ranked fighters were going to show what they were made of while looking to make a statement and climb to the top of the lists. However, as so many other times in decisive matches between undefeated, with the tickets sold for the fans to watch the boxer from Toledo (United States) fighting at home, the match was canceled 11 days before the date of the bout, this time due to alleged visa issues suffered by Kossobutskiy.
This led to American Charles Martin 29(26KO)-3(2)-1 stepping in as a late substitute. Given the circumstances, and if this cancellation really wasn’t planned from the start by Top Rank, the replacement isn’t completely bad considering the number of days remaining before the event. In addition, Martin is a boxer known to the public, who has faced boxers like AJ or Luis Ortiz and who was world champion (although it was just by chance).
All in all, Anderson is the clear favorite to win. Beyond the fact that Martin has been inactive for ten months, that he has lost his three biggest fights (one of them against the very limited Adam Kownacki), that he was knocked out by Joshua and the very veteran Ortiz, that he is 14 years older and that he has had very little preparation time, Anderson seems to be on a whole different level in terms of fitness, agility, punch, speed and motivation.
Since Anderson is sometimes very overconfident and he is a heavyweight, the difference between both boxers in the betting odds is not as huge as one might expect. However, this should not be misunderstood: if all goes as expected and Anderson doesn’t make any major mistakes, he should be able to use his fluidity, his quick combinations and his explosiveness to demolish Martin.
Makhmudov vs. Akpejiori
The co-feature bout will also be a heavyweight fight, as undefeated Russian Arslanbek Makhmudov 16(15KO)-0 will face his first clash against an undefeated facing Nigerian Raphael Akpejiori 15(14KO)-0. Despite his performance against Carlos Takam, whom he knocked down twice, did not convince all the fans (Takam later beat Tony Yoka), Makhmudov is ranked number 5 in the WBC and WBA and is considered one of the most relevant prospects in the division, some stating that he could close the year in a very important fight.
However, before it, in his American debut, he will have to show that he is capable of successfully dealing with Akpejiori, fighter with his same knockout percentage and who is even taller than him (with a similar weight), but who lacks his professional quality experience and his projection.
These two bouts will be televised in the United States on ESPN, ESPN Deportes and ESPN+ on Saturday from 10:00 p.m. ET / 7:00 p.m. PT, 3:00 a.m. in the UK, where the full card will be aired by Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Action.
