Los mejores combates del fin de semana (14-16/7/2023)

Viernes 14 de julio
El único combate mencionable de un flojísimo viernes se producirá en The Hangar Events Venue en Wolverhampton, Reino Unido, donde Iljaz Ahmed 10(1KO)-2-3 y Marcel Braithwaite 15(0KO)-3-1 pelearán por el vacante cinturón de Reino Unido del peso supermosca. Este choque será una revancha del interesante enfrentamiento que ambos ofrecieron el pasado marzo, duelo que terminó en empate al igual que los otros dos campeonatos británicos supermosca anteriores (ambos entre Ahmed y Khademi). El Ahmed-Braithwaite II seguramente resulte nuevamente un choque de estilos disputado, y probablemente termine en una nueva decisión de los jueces, así que sólo nos queda esperar que, por lo menos, esta vez no ha ya otro empate y se corone a un nuevo titular por fin.
Sábado 15 de julio
Como tantas otras semanas, la mejor velada estará a cargo de PBC, que desde el Cosmopolitan de Las Vegas, Estados Unidos, televisado por Showtime, ofrecerá una cartelera encabezada por el insigne prospecto estadounidense del peso ligero Frank Martin 17(12KO)-0. Tras su victoria sobre el dopado Michel Rivera, Martin es 2º WBA, 5º WBC, 6º IBF y 7º WBO y está llamando a las puertas de una mayúscula pugna, pero antes de ella se medirá al bronce olímpico armenio-alemán Artem Harutyunyan 12(7KO)-0. Aunque no es un mal púgil, Harutyunyan lleva un año inactivo y carece de mucha experiencia de calidad, siendo su mayor triunfo el obtenido ante el positivo en control antidopaje Samuel Molina, así que un boxeador tan sólido, talentoso y versátil como Martin será claro favorito para ganar.
En cuanto al respaldo, con el Donaire-Santiago aplazado, se producirá un muy buen test para el peso superligero Elvis Rodríguez 14(12KO)-1-1 ante el intrincado y experimentadísimo excampeón Viktor Postol 31(12KO)-4(1) y el alto peso wélter Freudis Rojas 10(10KO)-0 disputará su primer combate a diez rounds ante el mexicano Diego Sánchez 19(16KO)-2(1).
Por su parte, Matchroom y DAZN ofrecerán otra cartelera más con combates mal emparejados y que contradice las palabras de Eddie Hearn, que cada día vende más humo y de forma más desvergonzada. El evento, que se desarrollará en el Templo Masónico de Chicago, Estados Unidos, estará encabezado por una defensa de la campeona indiscutida del peso superpluma Alycia Baumgardner 14(7KO)-1, que tras las brechas mostradas en sus últimas dos peleas será protegida con una revancha ante la griega Christina Linardatou 14(6KO)-2. Aunque Linardatou derrotó a Baumgardner en 2018, se considera que queda poco de aquella boxeadora, ya que no ha peleado por debajo del peso superligero desde 2019, sólo ha disputado un fácil rodaje (a seis rounds) en los últimos tres años y medio y además ha pasado por un embarazo.
Respecto al acompañamiento, el peso pesado Jermain Franklin 21(14KO)-2 volverá al ring tras su combate ante Anthony Joshua peleando contra un Isaac Muñoz 17(14KO)-0-1 con récord inflado; el oro olímpico Andy Cruz 0(0KO)-0 debutará como profesional enfrentándose a un Juan Carlos Burgos 35(21KO)-7-3 que sólo ha ganado dos peleas en los últimos seis años; y el estadounidense Jarico O’Quinn 15(8KO)-1(1)-1 pondrá fin a quince meses de inactividad combatiendo en el peso supergallo contra Carlos Mújica 8(2KO)-2(2). En definitiva, la conquista de Estados Unidos que Eddie Hearn prometía cada vez está más lejos…
Por lo demás, el sábado tendrá también estos otros combates:
-En el Teatro Maggiore de Verbania, Italia, emitido por YouTube, el aspirante obligatorio WBC del peso superligero, el español Sandor Martín 40(13KO)-3, combatirá en una pelea de preparación ante el excampeón nacional italiano Arblin Kaba 15(2KO)-3(2)-1.
-En el Restaurante Arroyo de Ciudad de México, México, emitido por DAZN, el joven prospecto Alan Picasso 24(13KO)-0-1 combatirá en el peso supergallo contra un Sabelo Ngebinyana 15(11KO)-6(1)-1 que no viene de buenos resultados e Iván García 11(4KO)-1(1) y Luis Cerrito 12(7KO)-6(2)-1 se enfrentarán en un combate del peso mosca.
-En el Vertu Motors Arena de Newcastle, Reino Unido, televisado por DAZN, el peso superwélter Josh Kelly 13(7KO)-1(1)-1 se medirá a un Gabriel Corzo 18(3KO)-0 casi sin experiencia de calidad y Qais Ashfaq 12(5KO)-1 y Liam Dillon 12(3KO)-0-1 se enfrentarán por el vacante cinturón británico del peso superpluma.
-Desde el Club Atlético Paracao, Paraná, Argentina, TyC Sports emitirá un combate en el cual el prospecto del peso mosca Tobías Reyes 12(11KO)-0 buscará mejorar su clasificación peleando por dos títulos menores contra el mexicano José Ángel Pérez 13(10KO)-3-1.
-En Puebla, México, Agustín Pérez 9(4KO)-3(1)-1 y Brayan Rivera 11(9KO)-4 se verán las caras en una revancha del peso supergallo.
Domingo 16 de julio
Para terminar el artículo, se puede mencionar que el domingo en Sequals, Italia, se producirá un campeonato de Italia del peso gallo entre el titular Claudio Grande 11(3KO)-2 y el exaspirante UE Cristian Zara 9(3KO)-2 y el prospecto griego del peso wélter Panagiotis Tsochataridis 11(6KO)-0-1 afrontará una pugna de desarrollo contra el italiano Luigi Alfieri 9(0KO)-3.

Friday, July 14
The only mentionable fight of a very poor Friday will take place at The Hangar Events Venue in Wolverhampton, United Kingdom, where Iljaz Ahmed 10(1KO)-2-3 and Marcel Braithwaite 15(0KO)-3-1 will fight for the vacant British super flyweight belt. This clash is a rematch of the interesting fight that both held in March, bout that ended in a draw like the other two previous British super flyweight championships (both between Ahmed and Khademi). The Ahmed-Braithwaite II will surely be another contested clash of styles, and will probably end in a new decision, so we can only hope that, at least, this time there will not be another draw and a new titleholder will finally be crowned.

Like so many other weeks, the best evening will be the one organized by PBC, in this case from the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, United States, televised by Showtime. The card will be headlined by standout American lightweight prospect Frank Martin 17(12KO)-0. After his victory over the doped Michel Rivera, Martin is WBA No. 2, WBC No. 5, IBF No. 6 and WBO No. 7 and is really close to a major fight, but before it he will face Armenian-German Olympic bronze medalist Artem Harutyunyan 12 (7KO)-0. Although he is not a bad fighter, Harutyunyan has been inactive for a year and lacks quality experience, his biggest victory to date being the one he obtained against the doped Samuel Molina, so a boxer as solid, talented and versatile as Martin will be a clear favorite to win.
As for the support, with the Donaire-Santiago fight postponed, the co-feature bout will be a very good test for super lightweight Elvis Rodríguez 14(12KO)-1-1 against the tricky and highly experienced former champion Viktor Postol 31(12KO)-4(1), while the tall welterweight prospect Freudis Rojas 10(10KO)-0 will face his first ten-rounder against Mexican Diego Sánchez 19(16KO)-2(1).
For their part, Matchroom and DAZN will put on another card composed by mismatches and that contradicts the words of Eddie Hearn, who every day sells more smoke and in a more shameless way. The event, which will take place at the Masonic Temple in Chicago, United States, will be headlined by a defense of the undisputed super featherweight champion Alycia Baumgardner 14(7KO)-1, who after the flaws shown in her last two fights will be protected with a rematch against the Greek Christina Linardatou 14(6KO)-2. Although Linardatou defeated Baumgardner in 2018, little remains of that boxer, who has not fought below super lightweight since 2019, who has only stepped into the ring in an easy tune-up fight (six rounds) in the last three and a half years and who has gone through a pregnancy.
Regarding the undercard, heavyweight Jermain Franklin 21(14KO)-2 will return to the ring after his fight against Anthony Joshua fighting Isaac Muñoz 17(14KO)-0-1, boxer with a padded record; Olympic gold medalist Andy Cruz 0(0KO)-0 will debut as a professional facing Juan Carlos Burgos 35(21KO)-7-3, who has only won two bouts in the last six years; and American Jarico O’Quinn 15(8KO)-1(1)-1 will end fifteen months of inactivity fighting at super bantamweight against Carlos Mújica 8(2KO)-2(2). In short, the conquest of the United States that Eddie Hearn promised is further and further away…
