Los mejores combates de la semana (23-26/10/2024)

Ha pasado un tiempo desde el último artículo en Bastión Boxeo pero, de forma similar a lo que ha pasado tantas veces en la historia del pugilismo, lo que parecía una retirada definitiva se ha acabado convirtiendo finalmente en un inesperado “retorno a los rings”. Así, ¿qué mejor forma de volver que con Los mejores combates, un artículo que lleva formando parte de Bastión Boxeo desde su inicio en 2014? A continuación encontraréis un repaso de una semana boxística que no es la mejor, especialmente teniendo en cuenta algunas carteleras del pasado reciente, pero que, como siempre, tendrá algunas cosas interesantes y nos mantendrá entretenidos con combates desde diversos lugares.
Miércoles 23 de octubre
Comenzamos en el The Theater en el Madison Square Garden, donde el miércoles ProBox ofrecerá por YouTube un evento encabezado por un, seguramente igualado y contentido, campeonato mundial femenino IBF del peso gallo entre la japonesa Miyo Yoshida 17(0KO)-4 y la estadounidense Shurreta Metcalf 13(2KO)-4-1. Esta pelea es una revancha de la que ambas disputaron el pasado noviembre (sin título en juego), y en la cual Metcalf venció por decisión unánime.
En el respaldo de esta pugna, el invicto peso superligero Mykquan Williams 21(10KO)-0-2 disputará su tercer combate del año, esta vez ante el zurdo Lavisas Williams 10(3KO)-1(1)-1; el fogueado peso pesado Jerry Forrest 27(20KO)-6(2)-2 pondrá fin a más de un año de inactividad contra un Earl Newman 10(7KO)-3(1)-1 que no se sube al ring desde hace casi cuatro años; y el exretador mundial Edward “Kid” Vázquez 16(3KO)-2 combatirá en el peso superpluma contra Kenneth Taylor 14(6KO)-3-2.
Jueves 24 de octubre
El jueves, Golden Boy Promotions ofrecerá un nuevo evento menor desde el Fantasy Springs Casino de Indio, Estados Unidos, siendo este emitido por YouTube. En esta ocasión, el estadounidense Manuel “Manny” Flores 18(14KO)-1 combatirá en el peso gallo contra el mexicano Víctor Emmanuel Olivo 21(9KO)-4(1)-1, ante quien intentará anotarse su mayor victoria e intentar dejar atrás definitivamente el recuerdo de sus flojas actuaciones ante Franklin González y Walter Santibañes.
En el respaldo, el peso supergallo estadounidense José “Tito” Sánchez 13(7KO)-0 disputará un nuevo duelo a diez rounds en el que seguir adquiriendo experiencia y seguir preparándose para un combate decisivo. Su oponente será el duro, competente pero irregular mexicano Edwin Palomares 18(9KO)-5(1)-3.
Viernes 25 de octubre
El cinturón IBF de Yoshida, no será el único cetro del peso supergallo femenino que se pondrá en juego en esta semana, puesto que la danesa Dina Thorslund 22(9KO)-0, número 1 de la categoría y top 10 libra por libra pondrá en juego sus coronas WBC y WBO ante la japonesa Terumi Nuki 15(10KO)-5. La visitante ha sido retadora mundial en otras tres ocasiones, pero siempre se quedó corta ante rivales de menor versatilidad y en peor momento que Thorslund, por lo que no hay motivos para suponer que se producirá la sorpresa.
Por otro lado, en el Bolton Whites Hotel de Bolton, Reino Unido, Channel 5 emitirá una cartelera de Wasserman encabezada por una nueva pugna para el peso superligero Harlem Eubank 19(8KO)-0. Esta pugna ante el francés Nurali Erdogan 16(1KO)-3 está siendo vendida como un paso adelante para Eubank, y quizás lo sea, aunque eso dice mucho del nivel de sus rivales anteriores. En cualquier caso, el tiempo pasa, y Eubank necesita vencer, convencer y afrontar ya un verdadero salto en aumento de dificultad si no quiere quedarse estancado definitivamente.
Entre otros combates del respaldo, el invicto peso superligero Ben Marksby 10(0KO)-0 disputará su segundo combate a ocho rounds, esta vez ante el rumano Alin Florin Ciorceri 17(7KO)-5(2), que en 2022 se anotó un triunfo contra pronóstico en Reino Unido.
El viernes también se producirán estos duelos:
-En Moscú, Rusia, el imbatido peso pesado Artem Suslenkov 10(7KO)-0 dará un paso adelante ante el veterano Christian Hammer 27(17KO)-11(6), mientras que los peso supermedio Evgeny Shvedenko 16(7KO)-2(1)-1 y Sergei Gorokhov 15(10KO)-9(3)-2 se enfrentarán en un duelo bien emparejado.
-En Ciudad de México, emitido por ESPN Knockout, José Manuel Borrego 20(17KO)-4 y el brasileño Etoundi Michel 16(12KO)-0 se medirán en un interesante choque del peso superwélter.
-En el Deportivo Xochimilco de Ciudad de México, México, Televisa emitirá una pugna del peso supergallo entre el enrachado Bryan Mercado 28(23KO)-1 y el exretador mundial chileno José Velásquez 32(22KO)-10-3.
Sábado 26 de octubre
El combate más destacado de la semana será el que encabezará una velada de Matchroom Boxing desde el Co-op Live de Manchester, Reino Unido, emitida por DAZN. En él, el británico Jack Catterall 29(13KO)-1, número 2 en tres de los organismos y en racha de tres victorias, buscará asegurarse el acceso a un mayúsculo combate en la primera mitad del año enfrentándose al excampeón mundial estadounidense Regis “Rougarou” Prograis 29(24KO)-2, que intentará contradecir a quienes consideran que está acabado tras sus actuaciones ante Danielito Zorrilla y Devin Haney.
Por lo demás, éste será otro evento más de Matchroom con un respaldo bastante discreto: Reece Bellotti 19(14KO)-5(2) y Michael Gómez Jr. 21(6KO)-1 se verán las caras en un campeonato británico y de la Commonwealth del peso superpluma; el plata olímpico Pat McCormack 5(4KO)-0 pondrá fin a 15 meses de inactividad en una pelea del peso wélter ante el argentino William Andrés Herrera 16(7KO)-3(1); y Campbell Hatton 14(5KO)-1 intentará desquitarse de su primera derrota en una revancha contra James Flint 14(3KO)-2-2.
Por otro lado, en el Commerce Casino de Commerce, Estados Unidos, UFC Fight Pass emitirá la primera pelea pactada a doce asaltos de la carrera del joven pegador Omar Trinidad 16(13KO)-0-1, 10º WBC que buscará seguir trabajando en su desarrollo y preparándose para noches importantes peleando contra el competente argentino Héctor Andrés “La Maquinita” Sosa 17(9KO)-2, que el año pasado venció antes del límite al exretador mundial James Dickens.
El sábado también se producirán estos otros enfrentamientos:
-En Ereván, Armenia, emitido por YouTube, el excampeón mundial Murat “Iron” Gassiev 30(23KO)-2 volverá al ring, un año después de su derrota ante Otto Wallin, enfrentándose al invicto zurdo danés Kem Ljunquist 18(11KO)-0.
-En el Emperors Palace de Kempton Park, Sudáfrica, el peso superwélter Shervantaigh Koopman 14(9KO)-0 afrontará un buen test ante el canadiense Brandon Cook 26(18KO)-2.
-En el Kay Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center de Dallas, Estados Unidos, se subirán al ring púgiles como los superpluma Albert Ball 26(9KO)-0, Mickey Bey 25(13KO)-3(1)-1 y Tyler McCreary 18(8KO)-2-1, que se medirán respectivamente a los mexicanos José Iván Guardado 16(6KO)-2(1)-1, Sergio Ríos 17(6KO)-0 y Hugo Castañeda 15(11KO)-1-1.
-En el Polideportivo La Colonia de Junín, Argentina, televisado por TNT Sports, Maximilano Segura 18(14KO)-1(1)-1 y Franco Rodríguez 16(5KO)-1 se enfrentarán en un campeonato argentino y sudamericano del peso superligero.
-En el Teatro al Massimo de Palermo, Italia, emitido por DAZN, se producirá un encuentro del peso supergallo bien emparejado entre Vincenzo La Femina 14(8KO)-1(1) y Jordan Camacho 10(5KO)-0.
-En el York Hall de Londres, Reino Unido, el prospecto Louis O’Doherty 7(2KO)-0 afrontará su mayor test ante el fogueado Liam Dillon 14(3KO)-2-1.

It’s been a while since the last article in Bastion Boxing but, similarly to what has happened so many times in the history of boxing, what seemed like a definitive retirement has finally ended up becoming an unexpected «return to the rings». So, what better way to come back than with The best fights of the week, an article that has been part of Bastión Boxeo since its inception in 2014? Below you will find a review of a boxing week that is not the best, especially remembering some weekends in the recent past, but which, as always, will have some interesting bouts and will keep us entertained.
Wednesday, October 23
Let’s start at The Theater at Madison Square Garden, where ProBox will broadcast (YouTube) an event headlined by a surely contested IBF world bantamweight championship between Japanese Miyo Yoshida 17(0KO)-4 and American Shurreta Metcalf 13(2KO)-4-1. This fight is a rematch of the one they fought last November (without a title at stake), in which Metcalf won by unanimous decision.
As for the undercard, undefeated super lightweight Mykquan Williams 21(10KO)-0-2 will face his third fight of the year, this time against southpaw Lavisas Williams 10(3KO)-1(1)-1; seasoned heavyweight Jerry Forrest 27(20KO)-6(2)-2 will end more than a year of inactivity against Earl Newman 10(7KO)-3(1)-1, who has not stepped into the ring for almost four years; and former world title challenger Edward “Kid” Vázquez 16(3KO)-2 will square off against Kenneth Taylor 14(6KO)-3-2 in a super featherweight fight.
Thursday, October 24
On Thursday, the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, United States, will host another Golden Boy Promotions’ lesser card broadcast on YouTube. This time, American Manuel “Manny” Flores 18(14KO)-1 will fight Victor Emmanuel Olivo 21(9KO)-4(1)-1 in a bantamweight contest, Mexican boxer against whom he will try to score his biggest victory to date and leave behind the memory of his weak performances against Franklin González and Walter Santibañes. In the co-feature bout, American super bantamweight Jose “Tito” Sanchez 13(7KO)-0 will face a new ten-rounder in which keep gaining experience and continue preparing for a decisive fight. His opponent will be the tough and competent but inconsistent Mexican Edwin Palomares 18(9KO)-5(1)-3.
Friday, October 25
Yoshida’s IBF belt will not be the only female super bantamweight belt at stake this week, since Danish Dina Thorslund 22(9KO)-0, division’s number 1 (and top 10 pound for pound), will put her WBC and WBO crowns at stake against Japanese Terumi Nuki 15(10KO)-5. Nuki has been a world title challenger on three other occasions, but always fell short against opponents of less versatility and in worse shape than Thorslund, so there is no reason to assume that the fight could end in an upset.
At the Bolton Whites Hotel in Bolton, United Kingdom, Channel 5 will broadcast a Wasserman card headlined by a new fight for super lightweight Harlem Eubank 19(8KO)-0. Some talk about this bout against Frenchman Nurali Erdogan 16(1KO)-3 as a step up in competition for Eubank, and perhaps it is so, although that says a lot about the level of his previous opposition. In any case, time passes, and Eubank needs to win convincingly and face a real step up soon if he does not want his career to remain stagnant.
Among other fights on the undercard, undefeated super lightweight Ben Marksby 10(0KO)-0 will face his second eight-round bout, this time against Romanian Alin Florin Ciorceri 17(7KO)-5(2), who scored an upset in the UK in 2022.
Friday will also have these other fights:
-In Moscow, Russia, undefeated heavyweight Artem Suslenkov 10(7KO)-0 will take a step up against veteran Christian Hammer 27(17KO)-11(6), while super middleweights Evgeny Shvedenko 16(7KO)-2(1)-1 and Sergei Gorokhov 15(10KO)-9(3)-2 will face off in a well-matched duel.
-In Mexico City, broadcast on ESPN Knockout, José Manuel Borrego 20(17KO)-4 and Brazilian Etoundi Michel 16(12KO)-0 will square off in an interesting super welterweight clash.
-At the Deportivo Xochimilco in Mexico City, Mexico, Televisa will broadcast a super bantamweight fight between a fighter in a 27 winning streak as Bryan Mercado 28(23KO)-1 and a former world challenger as Chilean José Velásquez 32 (22KO)-10-3.
Saturday, October 26
The most relevant fight of the week will be the one that will headline a Matchroom Boxing evening from the Co-op Live in Manchester, United Kingdom, broadcast by DAZN. In it, British Jack Catterall 29(13KO)-1, number 2 in three of the organizations, will seek to secure access to a major fight in the first half of the next year facing American, former world champion, Regis “Rougarou” Prograis 29(24KO)-2, who will try to contradict those who consider him finished after his performances against Danielito Zorrilla and Devin Haney.
The rest of the Matchroom event, as often, will have little to highlight: Reece Bellotti 19(14KO)-5(2) and Michael Gomez Jr. 21(6KO)-1 will face off in a British and Commonwealth super featherweight championship; Olympic silver medalist Pat McCormack 5(4KO)-0 will end 15 months of inactivity in a welterweight fight against Argentinian William Andrés Herrera 16(7KO)-3(1); and Campbell Hatton 14(5KO)-1 will try to avenge his first defeat in a rematch against James Flint 14(3KO)-2-2.
On the other hand, at the Commerce Casino in Commerce, United States, UFC Fight Pass will air the first fight scheduled for twelve rounds for young puncher Omar Trinidad 16 (13KO)-0-1. This boxer, ranked as WBC number 10, who will seek to continue working on his development and preparing for important nights fighting competent Argentinian Héctor Andrés “La Maquinita” Sosa 17 (9KO)-2, who last year stopped former world challenger James Dickens.

-In Yerevan, Armenia, broadcast on YouTube, former world champion Murat “Iron” Gassiev 30(23KO)-2 will return to the ring, one year after his defeat against Otto Wallin, facing undefeated Danish southpaw Kem Ljunquist 18(11KO)-0.
